SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,118, dated Getober 2, 1883.

Be it known that I, HORACE GRAIGHEAD,

with paint or like ornamental substance, pro- A tecting the back, when finished, by a shell of sheet met-al or other suitable material, and then mounting the iinished plaque in a suitable frame.

In the accompanyiag drawings, Figure l is a face view of a plaque embodying my im-` provement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the saine, and showing it as formingY part of a card-receiver.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both iigures.

A designates apiece or shell of transparent glass, which is here shown as diShshaped; or, inf other words, as coneavo-convex- To the back of this piece of glass is applied any desired picture, B. This picture may be delineated on paper in colors and stuck, by any mucilaginous or other suitable adhesive substance, to the back of the piece of glass, in which case it will be pressed very close to the glass and rubbed over to force the air out from between it and the glass, as also to cause it to adhere at its edges to the glass. The picture may be transferred from a paper or other suitable backing to the back of the glass, if preferable. After the picture is applied to the back of the glass, l cover the portions of the back of the glass which surround the picture with any desirable backing, O. color, or with any ornamental substance re sembling a paint, such, for instance, as a liquid gilt. Such paint or like substance maybe applied by dipping the whole of the back of the glass and picture into it; or it may be applied with a brush or other means.

As a protection to the picture and the paint metal or other suitable material, extending over the same, and secured thereto by having its edges turned over the edges of the piece or shell of glass.

The plaque thus made is handsome, exceedingly cheap, and very durable. This plaque may be used as an ornament of any kind.

E designatesa frame, which may be made of metal or other suitable material and of any desirable configuration. It extends over the front edges of the'plaque, and is shown as being secured to the plaque by means of a ring or bezel, F, of metal, extending over the back of the plaque and secured to the frame by screws or otherwise. v

The plaque thus framed may be hung on a Wall, or it may form part of a card-receiver or other article. I have shown it in Fig. 2 as forming part of a card-stand, such as is used on a table.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

`In a plaque, the combination of a piece or shell of glass, a picture or design applied to the back, a backing of paint or like ornamental substance for the portion of the piece or shell of glass surrounding the picture or design, a covering of sheet metal extending over the picturewor design an d backing, and a frame surrounding the whole, substantially as specified.
