United States Patent The present invention relates to slide mountings for opposed leaves of a table, which can be brought into abutment when the table is of minor width, and which may be moved apart for the insertion of a central leaf which is added when maximum width of the table surface is desired.
, The characteristic of the slide of the present invention is that it consists of two flanged members, usually of hard {rolled steel, each member having a top broad flange ,which carries the appropriate table leaf, the slide having a downwardly extending vertical wall which merges into a U-shaped wall, thus completing the first member of the slide. The second member of the slide is of like construction, except that its U-shaped section is sufficiently reduced in size to closely fit within the like section of the first member. The two slide members, according to the present invention, are permanently held together by relatively broad metal strap means, preferably a single strap having at one upper margin a horizontal flange welded to the leaf-supporting flange of one of the two slide members. The said strap holds the U-shaped portions of the two slide members into firm abutment and provide a vertical guide wall in the relative movement of the two slide members.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a table having a fixed frame and two movable leaves, the table being one type to which the slide may be applied.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 and showing the table leaves moved outwardly to provide an area for receiving an added central leaf.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section, on the line 33, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an isometric view of the two-slide members, assembled and ready for use, being in closed positions.
Fig. 5 is a view similar'to Fig. 4 showing the slide members extended.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section in about full scale, taken on the line 6-6, Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing the slide members extended.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the slide of the present invention is adapted for tables of the type shown in Figures 1 and 2, as well as other table forms. In Fig. 1 and in .Fig. 2, the table has an upper frame upon which are slidingly supported table leaves 2. These leaves may be held against vertical movement by any desirable means, such for example as clips held by 2,860,939 Patented Nov. 18, 1958 the leaves and adapted to slide in channels longitudinally formed in the two frame members upon which the leaves are slidingly supported. This is customary and does not require illustration in the drawing. As an alternative, studs or rollers may be carried by said opposed frame members to enter channels of the slide members now 1 to be described.
Two slides will be employed, each consisting of two members interfitted for mutual sliding action. Each member consists of a horizontal flange 3 which merges into a vertical section 4 followed by a depending U-shaped section 5. As shown in Fig. 6, the U-shaped section of I slide member will be of less size than that of its co-acting member so as to be received by the latter.
The horizontal flange 3 of each slide member is formed 4 with the plurality of apertures at 6. Through it, screws may be passed underneath to engage, in each case, a table leaf. 3 e
The slide members of each slide are embraced by a strap which is U-shaped in form, the top of one leg being bent outwardly as in flange 4 Fig. '6, and which is' welded to one of the two slide members. This strap not only serves to slidingly hold and guide the two slide members, but also as a stop. Therefore the position of the strap, indicated at 8, is important. It lies somewhat short of one end of the member which carries it, and the second member is formed at each end with a finger 9 formed by a cut at 10 and the bending out of the metal from the cut. 1
By means of the invention, simple and effective means are provided for holding and guiding and controlling the extent of movement of the extension leaves of the table, and at low cost.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In slides for extension tables a first member formed of strong and rigid metallic material and having a top horizontal flange merging into a vertical wall which in turn merges into a depending U-shaped extension open at its side, a second member having the same form as the first member and with its U-shaped extension so reduced in size as to fit within the like extension of the first member, the flanges of both members being apertured, a strap disposed near one end of one of said members and rigidly secured thereto, the strap having parallel .legs embracing the two members, and the member opposite that carrying the strap being provided near each end with a finger for.
limit control of the extension of the two slide members.
2. A slide for extension tables, constructed in accordance with claim 1 in which the stop fingers carried near the ends of one slide member are adapted to engage the end edges of the strap held near the end of the second member, the stop fingers being formed by U-shaped cuts in the vertical wall area with the metal bounded by each cut bent angularly and outwardly, as for the purpose set forth.
