Description

A. ARCANQ LIFT CARRIERS FOR HOSPITAL PATIENTS Aug. 26, 1958 Filed April 15, 1955 E17/E, j., 3
` JNVENTUR I ANNA- ARUANU BY im f 1/ ATTDEN United States Patent O LIFT CARRIERS FOR HOSPITAL PATIENTS Anna Arcand, San Francisco, Calif.
Application April 15, 1955, Serial No. 501,597
1 Claim. (Cl. 5--85) This invention relates to improvements in lift carriers for hospital patients and injured persons in any locality and has for its primary object the provision of a specially constructed wheeled device having a shelf or leaf means adapted to be slidably extended across the bed and beneath the bed-ridden patient, whereby the patient or injured person can be readily transported from the bed to the operating room or ambulance in a most convenient and comfortable manner.
Another object of the present invention is to construct the shelf of two sections adapted to be slidably extended, transversely, one in the other and capable of interlocking one with the other.
Another object of the present invention is to construct the vehicle of such form and in such a manner as will enable it to be wheeled across the patients bed.
A further object of the present invention is to construct the front and rear supporting portions of the frame in such a form as will enable it to be positioned astraddle the front and rear ends of the bedstead.
A still further object of the present invention is to vertically curve the front and rear inner portions of the frame to facilitate the positioning of the patient on the device and removing the patient therefrom.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specication, wherein for the purpose of illustration, like numerals designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. l is a top plan view of the patient carrier embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the device embodying the invention, the bedstead being illustrated in dot and dash outline,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of the device, illustrating a construction for adjustably supporting the patient carrying shelves in a manner which will enable them to be raised or lowered to vary their height, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view of the interlocking portions of the two horizontal cross plates capable Aof being slidably positioned beneath the patient while in bed and supporting the patient on a vehicle from the bed to the operating table.
Referring in detail to the drawings and numerals thereof, wherein for the purpose of illustration like numerals designate like parts throughout the various views, the numeral 8 designates, as a whole, a conventional hospital bed frame of any suitable size, numeral 9 the head or front portion thereof and 10 the foot or rear portion. Numerals 11 and 12, also shown in dot and dash lines, designate the mattress and pillow, respectively.
The patient carrying device is preferably made of sheet metal and consists of an upwardly extending vertical back member 14, formed outwardly with a horizontal foot portion onto which is pivotally secured, vertically, a wheel supporting member 16, revolvably supporting a pair of wheels 19. Extending from the upper portion of the said back is an inwardly curved portion that projects downwardly in proximity to and below the pillow 12 to the horizontal portion 21 of the vehicle frame as 2,848,723 iatented Aug. 26, 1958 disclosed to advantage in Fig. 2. Extending upwardly from the said horizontal portion 21 is an upwardly extending inwardly curved portion 22 which overlaps the foot 10 of the bed frame and projects downwardly, as at 23, to an outer horizontal extension 24. The horizontal portion 21 is integrally formed with the curved portions 20 and 22 and supports thereon a shelf to be hereinafter described. A wheel supporting member 25 revolvably supports a pair of wheels 26 as shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 3 there is disclosed a modified form of the invention providing means in which the height of the device can be adjusted for accommodating different heights of hospital beds and also discloses the preferred form of construction .for slidably supporting two oppositely disposed shelves 29 and 30, the said shelves being formed with outer handles 29 and 30' respectively, and are inwardly supported one in the other by a ploughed and grooved construction as at 31. The said shelves are slidably supported in the frame as at 32 and 33 and are normally locked thereon by conventional wing headed screws 34 and 35. It is to be noted that when the patient is to be wheeled in the frame to the operating room the screws in the frame are removed and the shelves 29 and 30 are completely separated from the frame by pulling outwardly on the handles 29 and 30. The patient is then lowered to the top surface of the horizontal portion 21 of the frame and rests thereon and is wheeled away in the frame when it is entirely separated from the bed. Vertically slidable threaded supports 36 locked by conventional screws 37 retain the wheels 38 in vertically i adjustable positions on the supports 36 whereby the height of the device can be raised and lowered.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
What is claimed is:
A lifting and carrying device for transporting hospital patients from Va bed to the operating room, embodying in its construction, a frame including a central horizontal portion formed with a substantially inverted U-shaped front portion capable of fitting over the front of the bed, the front face of the said inverted U-shaped portion being of a downwardly curved configuration, a substantially inverted U-shaped portion formed on the rear of the frame and capable of tting over the foot of the bed, means including a plurality of wheel members for supporting the frame, means for adjusting the height of the frame, and a shelf mounted on the horizontal portion of said frame and capable of supporting a patient thereon, said shelf comprising a pair of at members adapted to be actuated from the opposite sides of the frame, a tongue and groove connection provided at the inner ends of said members for detachably securing the same to each other.
