DISPOSABLE DOOR MATS Filed March 19, 1956 I9 FIG. 3 Inventor BRUCE W. BORGSTROM Rcama United States Patent DISPOSABLE DOOR MATS Bruce W. Borgstrom, Clarkson, Ontario, Canada Application March 19, 1956, Serial No. 572,376
2 Claims. (Cl. 15-215) This invention relates to a disposable door mat.
A conventional door mat is relatively expensive and unwieldly for cleaning purposes. In many instances, the housewife places newspapers about household entrances on damp days because a door may become relatively ineffective upon saturation by moisture and dirt.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide a cheap, effective and disposable door mat which may be fashioned in a manner providing a pleasing appearance.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a disposable door mat formed of relatively coarse, cheap paper stock and which is adapted to maintain its place on ,a floor surface.
With these and other objects in view, the invention generally comprises a disposable door mat formed from a paper sheet preferably having an irregular surface and characterized by the ability to absorb moisture. The underside of the sheet embodies a waterproof coating which, in the preferred construction, is adapted to grip the floor surface to prevent slipping of the mat. It is also preferred to embody a reinforcing fibrous web in the structure of the mat.
Other objects of the invention will be appreciated by a study of the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of a pad of disposable door mats of the invention from which a mat may be removed before or after use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of a door mat according to a modification of the invention illustrating the structure thereof; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view corresponding to that of Figure 2 but illustrating a preferred structure.
Referring to the drawings, a plurality of disposable door mats maybe supplied in a stack 11 held together by a binding 12 from which each mat is removable along a weakened or perforated line 13. Each mat may have printed thereon various designs 14 and printed matter 15; the door mat of the invention lending itself particularly to colouring and ornamentation.
In construction, each of the mats 10 according to the invention, comprises a paper sheet 16 preferably formed from paper mach to provide a moisture absorbent irregular surfaced body. It is not intended to confine the invention to the use of such material for a very rough blotter-like stock may be employed as the paper sheet in the door mat construction of the invention. Also, a
2,843,868 Patented July 22, 1958 relatively light kraft paper having a wrinkled surface is suitable as a paper sheet in the door mat of the invention, though kraft paper is not as absorbent as may be desired in some instances. However, it may be more easily printed upon than most other suitable materials.
The under surface of the sheet 16 has applied thereto a water-proof coating 17. The water-proof coating may be in the form of a plastic composition sprayed thereon, for example, cellulose acetate. An effectively waterproofing plastic resin or oil-based paint may be employed for this purpose.
In Figure 3, a preferred construction is illustrated wherein a sheet 16 as before has applied thereto a waterproof coating 17 and carries thereunder a reinforcing fibrous web 18. A latex undercoating 19 sprayed or brushed thereon effectively bonds the web 18 to the sheet. In this connection, a latex coating may provide sufficient proof against moisture to obviate the necessity of applying a. special water-proofing coating 17.
It will be apparent that the disposable door mat of the invention may carry a variety of decoration thereon and may be provided in a variety of shapes.
While there has been described what is at present considered a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention and it is intended to cover herein all such changes and modifications as come within the true spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A door mat adapted for discard after usage and comprising in combination: an irregularly surfaced fibrous body formed of paper adapted for absorption of moisture and shaped in the form of a sheet; a water-proof coating extending entirely over one surface of said sheet and rendering said surface substantially water impermeable; a latex coating extending over surfaces of said waterproof coating and providing a floor surface gripping medium for said mat rendering the latter safe for use; and a fibrous reinforcing web bonded to said sheet by said water-proofing coating.
2. A door mat structure comprising in combination: a plurality of stacked door mat sheets each [being in the form of an irregularly surfaced fibrous body formed of paper adapted for absorption of moisture; a water-proof coating extending entirely over the undersurface of each sheet and rendering said surface substantially impervious to water; a latex coating on the undersurface of each sheet and providing a gripping medium against a supporting surface therefor; and means removably binding said sheets substantially along one edge thereof.
