LUDVIG PIEPGRASS, OF I-IOBOKEN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND BERTHOLD EHLER, OF WEST HOBOKEN, NEV JERSEY.
FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,057, dated August 28, 1881 (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDWIG Pinreniiss, a citizen of Germany, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New .I ersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a iire-kindler composed of a convolute coil of veneer, card- 1o board, or other equivalent material, which is saturated with resin, oleic acid, or other inflammable material', and wound up in a pecu liar manner, so that the same, when ignited, will produce an intensive flame.
the coil is provided with a lighting` compound which ignites by friction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a central section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end view `showing 2@ the tip. Figli is an end view showing the bottom. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank form from which myiire-kindler is made.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates my 1 25 ire-kindler, which is made from a blank, B,
Fig. 5, of veneer, card-board, or other equivalent material. The blanks B, or the material from which the saine are eut, are saturated in a solution of resin and turpentine, or in l oleic acid, or in any other material of a similar nature which -will render the articlehighly iniiammable. These blanks may be eut either in the form of a rectangle or of a trapezoid, but I prefer to cut the same in the form shown 5 in Fig. 5, so that the same, when wound up, will produce a convolute coil, such as shown in Figs. l, 3, and 4. If the blank is rectan gular, a convolute coil with a center draft is produced, both ends of which are iiat, and if 4o the blank is trapezoidal a eonvolute coil with a center draft is produced, one end of which is concave, while the other end is conical; but by cutting the blank in the form shown in Fig. 5 the convolute coil produced from the 4 5 same has a center draft, a, a concave bottom, b, a conical tip, c, and a rim, d, which incloses the bottom part of the conical tip. By referring to Fig. 5 it will be seen that the end The tip of di ofthe blank is of greater width than the remaining portion, and by this end d* the rim d is produced when the blank has been coiled up. To the end ofthe conical tip c is applied a lighting compound, c, such as commonly used for friction-matches, so that my nre-kindler can be readily ignited.
Vhen ignited, my ire-kindler burns very readily and with an intensive flame, due to the center draft, a, and to the iniiammable material used for saturating the blanks. The rim d and the concave bottom b materially increase the facility with which my iire-kindlers burn up. i
In packing up my ire-kindlers for transportation, the tip c of one is placed into the concave space at the bottom of another iirekindler, and if the tip is provided with the lighting compound, the concave space into which it is placed protects the lighting compound, so that the same is not liable to be exposed to friction, which might cause its ignition. In order to obtain this result, the tip is made to Aproject only a short distance beyond the edge of the rim d, so that when said tip is inserted into the concave bottom of another iire-kindler the lighting compound attached to the same does not come in contact with the inner surface of the bottom.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Fatent, is-
l. A iire-kindler composed of a convoiuted sheet of card-board or equivalent material saturated or coated with an inflammable substance, and having a longitudinal unobstructa ed central draft-passage, substantially as described.
2. A iire-kindler composed of a convoluted sheetof card-board or equivalent material saturated or coated with an inflammable sub stance, and having a central longitudinal unobstructed draft-passage, and provided at its ends, respectively, with a concavity and a conical tip, substantially as described.
3. A re-kindler composed of veneer or card-board saturated or coated with an inflammable substance, and wound in the form of a convolute coil with a center draft, a concave bottom end7 a -oonioal tip7 and a oylin- In testimony whereof I haveheieunto set my drioal rim surrounding said tip. hand and seal in the presence of two subsoiib- /10 4.
