VICTOR E. ANDERSON BY W ATTORNEYS June 24, 1958 v. E. ANDERSON DOOR FRAME Filed June 27, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 FIG.4.
- INVENTOR.
VICTQR E ANDERSON FIG.6.
W; mwmw ATTORNEYS United States Paten DooR FRAME Victor E. Anderson, Bradenton, Fla., assignor to V. E. Anderson Manufacturing Company, Bradenton, Fla., a corporation of Kentucky Application June 27, 1955, Serial No. 518,204 I 10 Claims. (Cl. 189-46) This invention relates generally to door frames and refers more particularly to metallic frames adapted to be mounted in an opening in a wall. It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction which is adjustable in the wall opening to fit the door. It is a further object to obtain a construction which may be formed from extruded metal bars.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view through an extruded metallic bar assembly forming one of the sides of the door frame and showing in section upon opposite sides of said assembly portions respectively of a wall and of a door with which said assembly is associated.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the several members illustrated in Fig. 1 for forming the assembly, and showing said members detached from each other.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through a modified form of the member B.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view through a bar assembly in which the form of the member B in Fig. 3 is employed, and showing other portions of said assembly in elevation.
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of a corner portion of the bar assembly illustrated in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of a door within a complete frame structure. I
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary cross sectional view through a modified construction in which the form of the member Bin Fig. 3 is employed.
When a door frame is placed within the opening in a wall in which it is to be placed it must be fitted to this opening as well as to the door. Where the frameis formed of metallic members this fitting is not so easily A 2,840,201 Patented June 24, 1958 we v will extend adjacent to the upright edge of the door K when in closed position. Thus, a frame for fitting the wall opening may be formed of bars A constituting the side posts and alsothe connecting header at the-top. In like manner a frame for fitting the door K may be formed of bars B at the sides and top thereof, and such bars may be mitered or otherwise fashioned for connection at the corners. As previously stated, the side flanges'B and B of the bars B fit between the flanges A and 'A of the bars A. Consequently variations in the size of the opening with respect to the size of the door may be compensated for by adjustment of these flanges with respect to each other before the two bars are secured together. It may be desirable in the forming of the frame touse a removable third bar C of Z-shape 1 cross section. This includes portions C and C which are parallel respectively to the portions B and B and a. portion C parallel to and extending between the flanges A and B of the bars A and B. Thus, the member C is adjacent the door when closed, and the portion C constitutes the door jamb. This portion C fits between the portions B and an overhanging extension B of the portion B and is fashioned with an undercut groove C therein for receiving a weather strip D. The latter may be formed of suitable cushioning material directly attached to a metallic strip E which is telescopically engageable with the undercut groove C In assembling the structure, the members A may be secured Within an opening in the wall F by suitable means, such as the headed screws G that extend through the webportion A and threadedly engage the wall F. The members B at the sides and the top may before engagement performed. I have, therefore, devised a construction in and includes the parallel side flanges A and A and the connecting web portion A extending at right angles thereto. The bar B has parallel side flanges B and B spaced to fit between the side flanges A and A of the bar A. The connecting portion of the bar B between the flanges B and B is provided-with portions B and B which are parallel to each other and at right angles to the flanges B and B respectively, and is also provided with an integral intermediate portion B disposed at right angles to the portions B and B and parallel to the flanges B and B With such construction the portion B may form the door jamb, and the portion B with each other be engaged with the corresponding members A. The members C may be similarly engaged with the members B, and together with the members B are fitted to the door. The members A and B may then be secured to each other after proper relative adjustment by self tapping screws H and H respectively engaging the flanges A, B and A B The latter screw H also secures the portion C to the flanges A and B Thus, the composite frame fits both the wall opening and the door.
In case the frame is formed without the third mem ber Q the member B is formed asshown in Fig. 3, and has the portion B thereof of greater thicknessthan the portion B as shown in Fig. 1, and also has an undercut groove B in the portion B, the latter corresponding to the portion B as shown in Fig. l, andthe groove corresponding to the groove C Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the corner portion of a door frame formed of bars, as shown in Fig. 3, and it will be noted that the end of the bars A and B of one portion' of the frame are butted against the sides of corresponding bars forming the right angle portion of the frame. In Fig. 7 a modified construction is shown in which the bars A are omitted and the bars B illustrated in Fig. 3 are secured to wooden members I and I which are mounted within the wall opening. In all of these constructions the door fitting portion of the frame telescopically engages the frame members fitting the wall opening so as to be applicable to openings of different dimensions.
