1 (flaim. (Cl. 229-15) This invention appertains to packaging, and more particularly to a novel combination container for receiving and dispensing different characters of food products, such as, for instance, ice cream and a syrup or topping therefor.

One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a combination container formed from paper or cardboard embodying a main body portion or cup for receiving ice cream or the like and a hollow closure or cover therefor containing syrup or other topping, so that upon the sealing of the container, the hollow cover or closure can be removed form the cup and thereafter opened, whereby the syrup or other flavoring can be poured over the ice cream to give the consumer a desired sundae.

Another salient object of my invention is to provide means whereby the hollow cover or closure can be easily associated with or removed from the main body portion or cup, and whereby the hollow closure or cover will form an efficient seal for the cup.

A further important object of my invention is to provide a hollow closure or cover forming a compartment for syrup or the like which will form an ideal seal for ice cream cups or containers of a type now generally used for dispensing ice cream and like products to the public.

A still further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the sealing disc for the hollow closure or cover will form an efiective reinforcement for the cover or closure, whereby to prevent the collapsing thereof when said hollow closure or cover is associated with the cup or removed from the cup.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a combination container of the above character, which will be durable and efiicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing,

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved combination container.

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but partly broken away and in section, to illustrate the novel interlocking of the hollow cover or closure and the main body portion or cup.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view partly broken away and in section, illustrating a slightly modified form of hollow closure or cover for the main body portion or cup.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter C generally indicates my improved combination container and the same embodies a lower main body portion or cup 5 and an upper removable hollow closure or cup 6.

The lower main body or cup section 5 can be formed from cardboard, paper, or the like, and is of a general construction now commonly used in the open market for dispensing ice cream and like products. As shown in the drawing, the section 5 includes a side wall 5 having its upper edge rolled to provide a bead 7. The side wall 5' adjacent to the bead 7, is provided with an annular out-struck rib 8 defining an interior seat 9.

The upper closure or cover section 6 is formed similar to the lowere section 5 but of a slightly less diameter and the same includes a side wall It) having its outer edge rolled to provide a reinforcing head 11. The side wall 10 is formed on a flat wall 12 which normally constitutes the bottom wall of the section 6. The side wall 10 has formed therein adjacent to the bead 11 an annular outstruck rib 13, which forms an interior annular channel 14, for a purpose, which will later appear.

In use of my improved combination container the lower section 5 is filled to the desired level with ice cream or other desired product and the upper section 6 is filled with syrup or other desired topping for the ice cream. This section is sealed by springing a flat sealing disc 15 into the annular channel 14 after which the upper section 6 is inverted, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the upper section is sprung into the upper end of the bottom section 6 until the bead 11 springs into the channel 9. Thus the upper section forms an effective closure or cover for the lower section 5 and a complete seal is provided. Great stress is laid on the sealing disc 15 in that not only does the same constitute a sealing member, but also a reinforcement to prevent the collapsing of the upper section 6 during the connection thereof with the lower section 5 and during the removal of the upper section from the lower section. It is to be noted also that the disc 15 is in close proximity to the bead It which insures the proper resiliency or stifiness to the head for the spring action into the channel 9.

In Figure 3, I have shown a desirable modified form of the invention, and in this form I provide an upper section indicated by the reference character 16, which includes a side wall 17 so-formed that its outer end is tapcred inwardly, as at 18. This tapered end 18 has formed therein the out-struck annular rib 19 defining an interior annular channel 20. This channel 20 receives a sealing disc 21 to complete the interior compartment in the hollow upper section 16. The out-struck rib 19 is adapted to spring into the lower section 5 and into the channel 9. In this form the sealing disc 21 provides the necessary rigidity for insuring the correct springing of the rib 19 into the channel 9. Likewise, the point of connection of the inwardly tapered portion 18 with the major portion of the wall 17, defines a shoulder 22 which seals against the lip or bead 7 of the lower section or cup 5. In all other respects, the form of my invention shown in Figure 3 corresponds and functions in the same way as that form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2.

In that form of my invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the conical tapered upper section can be easily sprung into the lower section 5, as is readily apparent from Figure 2.

While in the drawing 1 have shown both the upper and lower sections of a round shape in cross-section, it is to be understood that the same can be made square or any other desired shape. it is also to be understood that I do not limit myself to the materiai placed in the upper and lower sections, and various types of food stuffs can be packed in my combination container. The combination container can be effectively used for ice cream sodas.

In certain instances, it might be desirable to utilize hot fudge as a topping, and in this instance the sections of my container are maintained separate from one another and are not united until a sale is made.

Various other changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of my invention, but what I claim as new is:

A combination container comprising a lower main body section having a side Wall provided at its upper end with a bead. and an outstruck rib adjacent to the bead defining an interior sealing channel, and an upper hollow section having a side wall terminating in a rolledbead and said sidewall having an interior sealing channel adjacent to said head, a sealing disc sprung into the channel of the upper section and said upper section being fitted into the upper end of the lower section with its bead sprung into the sealing channel of the lower section, said sections being joined in end to end relation, whereby said upper section provides an effective closure and cover for the lower section.
