Samuel J1 Hall ATTORNEYS Unite PACKAGE or GLOVES The invention relates to the packaging of articles for transportation, storage and display, and more particularly to a novel manner of banding a pair of gloves so that they may be handled without becoming detached.

It is customary to assemble gloves in pairs at the factory, so that they may be easily handled for shipping, and for placing on display, on counters, show cases and the like, in retail stores. Because of the low cost of the average rubber gloves, it is necessary for economic reasons that the cost of thus packaging the gloves be held to a minimum.

Therefore, it is general practice to assemble a pair of rubber gloves by means of aband, usually of paper or light weight cardboard, which is placed around the wrist portions of the two gloves forming the pair, for the purpose of holding them together.

Due, however, to the great flexibility and softness of rubber gloves, especially those of lighter weight such as are generally used by housewives, there is a tendency for the gloves to crumple or collapse laterally, whereby they frequently slide out ofthe usual packaging band, and become separated from each other.

It"also happens, where the band is stiff enough to prevent such crumpling or collapsing of the gloves, that such stiff bands have a tendency to crease the edges of the gloves, at the points where the band folds around the gloves so as to materially weaken the gloves at these points, if not completely damaging them so as to make them unfit for sale or use.

The present invention therefore has as its object the provision of such a packaging device for banding a pair of rubber gloves together in a manner which overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages and objections.

A'further object is to provide such a glove packaging device comprising a substantially rigid, flat sheet of cardboard 'or the like between the wrist portions'of a pair of gloves, and an endless band of flexible material located around the wrist portions of the two gloves, so as to clamp the gloves, in flat condition, against opposite sides of said rigid sheet. a

Another object is to provide such a packaging device in which the cardboard sheet is provided at one end, with laterally disposed ears or lugs for contact with the adjacent edge of the flexible band, to prevent the sheet from sliding through the band in the opposite direction.

A further object of the invention is to provide a packaging device of this character in which the cardboard sheet is provided with an extension projecting beyond the gauntlet ends of the gloves and adapted to be folded back to prevent the sheet from sliding through the band in the opposite direction.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a packaging device of the type referred to in which the extension upon the end of the flat, substantially rigid sheet is States Patent 2,732,934 Patented Jan. 31, 1956 ICC The invention may be described in general terms as comprising a packaging device including a flexible band and a flat sheet of substantially rigid material, such as cardboard or the like, of a width substantially equal to the width of the wrist portions of the gloves to be packaged, and of sufiicient length to extend from the wrist portions to the gauntlets of the gloves.

This flat sheet member is provided at its upper end with laterally disposed ears or lugs to prevent the same from sliding through the band, and an extension is formed upon the lower end of the sheet and adapted to project beyond the gauntlet ends of the gloves, the extension having a perforation therein, whereby the packaged pair of gloves may be suspended from a hook or the like.

This extension maybe scored or creased, so that it may be folded back over the gauntlet end of one of the gloves of the pair, to prevent displacement of the sheet in the opposite direction.

The flexible band comprising the other member of the packaging device, may be formed of cellophane, paper or other suitable flexible material, adapted to be banded. around the wrist portions of the pair of gloves, with the flat sheet of cardboard or the like interposed between the gloves, the ends of the flexible band being cemented orotherwise attached together, forming an endless band of substantially the width of the Wrist portions of the gloves,

Referring now more particularly to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout, a pair of conventional rubber gloves are shown in the package,

the lowermost glove being indicated generally at 10 and the uppermost glove of the pair being shown generally at 10a.

The gloves shown are the usual thin, soft rubber gloves such as are commonly used by housewives and the like,

and each glove comprises a hand portion 12, having fingers 13 and thumb 14, a wrist portion 15 which is of less width than the hand portions, and an enlarged gauntlet portion 16 at the lower end of the glove. Such gloves are very soft and pliable and are easily crumpled or squeezed together.

This packaging device comprises generally a sheet of substantially rigid material, such as cardboard or the like,

indicated generally at 17, and a flexible, endless band of cellophane, paper orthe like, indicated generally at 18.

The substantially rigid sheet 17 is of a width substantially the width of the wrist portions 15 of the gloves, and of suflicient length to extend from the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the gloves to the end of the gauntlet portions thereof, as best shown in Fig. 2. a At its upper or inner end, the substantially rigid sheet 17 is provided, at opposite sides, with the laterally disposed ears or lugs 19. These ears or lugs may be formed integrally with the sheet 17, or preferably, as shownin the drawing, may comprise the opposite ends of a substantially narrow, transversely disposed strip 20 of the same material as the sheet .17, cemented or otherwise firmly attached to the upper end portion of said sheet so as to reinforce and stiffen the same.

The outer end of the substantially rigid sheet 17 is provided with a reduced extension 21, which may be provided with an aperture 22 by means of which the packaged pair of gloves may be suspended from a hook or the like for display.

This extension may be scored or creased, as indicated at23, so that the same may be folded upon the score lines and bent back over the adjacent gauntlet portion of one of the gloves, the end of the extension being tucked within this one glove, as indicated at 24 in Fig. 1, thus preventing the cardboard sheet 17 from sliding longitudinally in the opposite direction relative to the gloves.

In assembling the gloves in a pair, one glove, as indicated at 10, is laid upon a table or other horizontal surface in flat condition, and the substantially rigid sheet 17 is then placed upon the wrist portion of the glove, with the lateral ears or lugs 19 of the sheet located substantially at the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the glove, the outer end of the sheet 17 extending to the end of the gauntlet portion 16 of the glove, as best shown in Fig. 2.

The other glove of the pair, as indicated at a, is placed upon the lower glove 10, and on top of the substantially rigid sheet 17, and the band or strip 18 of cellophane, paper or the like, which is of a width substantially equal to the reduced wrist portions of the gloves, is then wrapped around the wrist portions 15 of the two gloves 10 and 1011, with the substantially rigid sheet 17 therebetween, and the overlapped ends 25 of the band are attached together by any suitable adhesive.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper edge of the band 18 substantially contacts the lower edges of the laterally disposed ears or lugs 19 of the substantially rigid sheet 17, thus preventing the sheet 17 from sliding longitudinally between the pair of gloves, in the direction of the gauntlet ends thereof.

By folding the extension 21, upon the score marks or creases 23, and bending the same over one thickness of the gauntlet portion of one of the gloves and tucking the end 24 thereof inside of the gauntlet end of that glove, as shown in Fig. 1, the sheet 17 is also'held against longitudinal movement in the opposite direction.

Thus a simple, economical and efiicient packaging device is provided for holding a pair of rubber gloves tightly banded together in flat condition, preventing the gloves from becoming separated from each other, and without sharply creasing or damaging the gloves at the points where the band folds around them.

In the foregoing description, certain terms have been used for brevity, clearness and understanding, but no unnecessary limitations are to be implied therefrom beyond the requirements of the prior art, because such words are used for descriptive purposes herein and are intended to be broadly construed.

Moreover, the embodiments of the improved construction. illustrated and described herein are by way of example, and the scope of the present invention is not limited to the exact detailsof construction.

Having now described the invention or discovery, the construction, the operation and use of preferred embodiments thereof, and the advantageous new and useful results obtained thereby; the new and useful construction, and reasonable mechanical equivalents thereof obvious to those skilled in the art, are set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A packaging device for a pair of gloves located one upon the other in flat condition, said packaging device comprising a sheet of substantially rigid material located between the two gloves, said sheet being of a width substantially the width of the wrist portions of the gloves and of suflicient length to extend from the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the gloves to the lower ends thereof, laterally disposed ears at the upper end of said sheet, and an endless'band of flexible material located around and enclosing the wrist portions of said pair of gloves and the substantially rigid sheet therebetween, the upper edge of said flexible band being located immediately below the laterally disposed ears on said sheets.

A packaging device for a pair of gloves located one upon the other in flat condition, said packaging device comprising a sheet of substantially rigid material located between the two gloves, said sheet being of a width substantially the width of the wrist portions of the gloves and of suflicient length to extend from the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the gloves to the lower ends thereof, a transversely disposed strip of substantially rigid material attached to the upper end of said sheet, the ends of said strip forming laterally disposed ears at the upper end of said sheet, and an endless band of flexible material located around and enclosing the wrist portions of said pair of gloves and the substantially rigid sheet therebetween, the upper edge of said flexible band being located immediately below the laterally disposed ears on said sheets.

A packaging device for a pair of gloves located one upon the other in flat condition, said packaging device comprising a sheet of substantially rigid material located between the two gloves, said sheet being of a width substantially the width of the wrist portions of the gloves and of sufficient length to extend from the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the gloves 'to the lower ends thereof, laterally disposed ears at the upper end of said sheet, and an endless band of flexible material located around and enclosing the wrist portions of said pair of gloves and the substantially rigid sheet therebetween, the upper edge of said flexible band being located immediately below the laterally disposed ears on said sheet, and an extension upon the lower end of said substantially rigid sheet projecting beyond the lower ends of the gloves.

4. A packaging device for a pair of gloves located one upon the other in flat condition, said packaging device comprising a sheet of substantially rigid material located between the two gloves, said sheet being of a width substantially the width of the wrist portions of the gloves and of sufficient length to extend from the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the gloves to the lower ends thereof, laterally disposed ears at the upper end of said sheet, and an endless band of flexible material located around and enclosing the wrist portions of said pair of gloves and the substantially rigid sheet therebetween, the upper edge of said flexible band being located immediately below the laterally disposed ears on said sheet, and an extension upon the lower end of said substantially rigid sheet projecting beyond the lower ends of the gloves, said extension having an aperture therein.

5. A packaging device for a pair of gloves located one upon the other in flat condition, said packaging device comprising a sheet of substantially rigid material located between the two gloves, said sheet being of a width substantially the width of the wrist portions of the gloves and of suflicient length to extend from the junction of the hand and wrist portions of the gloves to the lower ends thereof, laterally disposed ears at the upper end of said sheet, and an endless band of flexible material located around and enclosing the wrist portions of said pair of gloves and the substantially rigid sheet therebetween, the upper edge of said flexible band being located immediately below the laterally disposed ears on said sheet, and an extension upon the lower end of said substantially rigid sheet projecting beyond the lower ends of the gloves, said extension being folded back upon itself and located within the lower end portion of one of said gloves.
