BUTTER-PACKAGE. A

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,020, dated. February 27, 1883.

Be it known that I, JOHN 0. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Davenport Centre, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttor-Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in packing and preserving butter; and it has for its objects to provide certain improved means whereby butter may be packed for transportation or for storage, as more fully hereinafter specified.

The above-mentioned objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my butter preserving and packing device entire, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the jarclamping device, with the parts slightly removed from position Fig. 4, a plan view of the removable partition; and Fig. 5, a view, from below, of a section of the-jar and partition, showing the clamp in its position with reference to the jar and partition.

In the drawings, the letter Aindicates a box or casing, which may be constructed of wood or any other suitable material, and which may be of any suitable shape, the said casin g being represented of rectangular shape in the presentinstance. The said box or casing, at its bottom, is provided with a seat, B. for

the bottom of the butter-receptacle, to be more particularly hereinafter described, and

near its top is provided with cleats O, on opposite sides, which support a removable horizontal partition, D, having a central aperture, through which the butter receptacle sets. The said partition is provided with ventilating-apertures E at diagonally-opposite corners, as shown.

The letter G indicates the glass butter-receptacle. It is tapering in form from top to bottom, so as to set in the seats formed for it in the inclosing-casin The top of said receptacle is provided with a horizontal flange,

H, which on its upper face has an annular groove, I, in which is adapted to set an annular bead or flange, R, on the cover L. The said cover is detachably secured to the mouth of the receptacle by means of the screwclamps M, which set over the edges of the cover and under the horizontal flanges of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2, a packing of rubber or other material, N, beinginterposed, as indicated in said Fig. 2. The lower end of thescrew-clamp M is secured in the recess 0 in the flange H, which prevents its accidental displacement during transportation. It will be observed that these screw-clamps M pass half-way through the partition D, which prevents the shifting of the glass jar.

In packing butter for the market the outer casing may be filled with ice or refrigerating mixtures, in order to cool the butter and supply it for immediate use; but this is not necessary for the preservation of the butter, as it will remain perfectly sweet for years as long as hermetically sealed in the receptacle.

The advantages of my invention will be apparent from the above description. It will be seen that as the receptacle is constructed of vitreous material it will not rot or oxidize, as would be the case with wood or metal, and hence is comparatively indestructible from such agencies, and that it will be protected from breakage by the inclosing-casing, thus constituting a device which may be used year after year with convenience and economy.

2. The taperglassjarGr, having flangeH,provided with the recesses O, in combination with the clamps M, restingin the recesses 0, whereby the clamps are prevented from lateral displacement, substantially as shown and described.
