4 Claims. (Cl. 51218) This invention relates to an adjustable holder for grinding chisels.
A primary object of the invention is to provide an adjustable and movable holder for supporting chisels or the like in proper grinding relation to a grinding wheel and which is particularly characterized in its structural -i simplicity, and its ease and efiiciency of operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will present themselves in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the improved holder in accordance with a preferred structural embodiment thereof.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the holder with a movable portion thereof shown in an alternate position in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the holder.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder showing a chisel in dotted lines supported by the holder in a position for grinding contact with a usual form of grinding wheel.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, the improved tool holder structure comprises a vertical strap or plate which is provided with a central longitudinal slot 11 and which is adapted to be secured by any suitable means to a work bench B or any other suitable fixed support and in fact such plate may be secured to the frame of certain forms of grinders.
A right angle bracket 12 is provided with an elongated slot 13 in its vertical leg 14 and is also provided with an elongated slot 15 in its horizontal leg 16.
The vertical leg 14 is engaged with the upper end of plate 10 with the respective slots 15 and 11 aligned and through which is extended a bolt 17 having a nut 18 for clamping the bracket 12 in any predetermined vertical adjustment on the plate 10.
A horizontal cylindrical guide member 19 is adjustably supported on the leg 16 of the bracket 12 by means of a boss 20 engaging the upper face of leg 16 and from which depends a stud bolt 21 which extends through the slot 16 and on which is threaded a nut 22 for binding the said guide 19 in any predetermined adjusted position on the leg 16 and lengthwise of the slot 15 therein.
A U-shaped carriage 23 having vertically spaced horizontal cylindrical legs 24 and 25 has the former freely disposed within a bore 19 in guide 19 for both axial and rotary movement.
A tool clamping member 26 is adjustably supported by the leg 25 and such member is formed of relatively stilf spring steel and includes a horizontal base 27, a free ended relatively high end wall 28, a relatively shallow end wall 29 from the upper end of which extends a horizontal wall 30 and from whose opposite end extends a right angularly disposed tool engaging vertical wall 31 and from whose upper end extends a top clamping wall 32 which is inclined downwardly toward the end wall 29 and into nited States Patent 6 normal contact with the horizontal wall 30 and which terminates in a finger engageable upturned lip 33. r
The end walls 28 and 29 normally diverge upwardly and are each inclined to the horizontal at an angle of approximately The walls 28 and 29 are each provided with an aperture 34 whose axes are normal to the walls and which axes are accordingly normally non-aligned.
The cylindrical leg 25 extends through the apertures 34 and in order to insert the leg within the apertures, the walls 28 and 29 are forced into general parallelism which is facilitated by the higher wall 28 and after restoring the walls to their normal positions the walls defining the apertures 34 bite into the leg 25 and thereby hold the clamping member 26 rigid with the carriage 23.
A tool to be ground, such as a chisel C, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4, is inserted into position upon grasping the lip 33 and urging the spring wall 32 upwardly for introduction of the chisel between the walls 30 and 32 and with one edge thereof engaged with the vertical wall 31 which acts as a tool positioning means.
In use, of the improved holder and with a chisel C positioned as disclosed, the bevel edge E thereof is brought into grinding contact with a grinding wheel and due to the combined linear and rotary movement of the carriage 23 in the guide member 19, such edge is capable of being moved along the grinding surface of the wheel as well as being brought into proper angular relation therewith.
As indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the carriage 23 has been rotated through a predetermined angle and the clamping member 26 has been adjusted thereon for other possible conditions in grinding.
The slots 11 and 13 provide for vertical adjustment of the guide member 19 and the slot 15 provides for horizontal adjustment thereof.
While I have disclosed my invention in accordance with a single specific structural embodiment thereof, such is to be considered as illustrative only, and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being defined in the subjoined claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. Means for holding a chisel or like tool in grinding relation to a grinding wheel, comprising a vertical plate having a longitudinal slot therein, a right angular bracket including vertical and horizontal legs, said vertical leg having an elongated slot therein aligned with said first slot, clamping means extending through said slots, said horizontal leg being provided with an elongated slot and a guide member having a stud bolt extending through said last slot, a nut on said bolt for adjustably holding said guide member in position, said guide member having a cylindrical wall opening therethrough, a U-shaped carriage including vertically spaced upper and lower legs,
said lower leg being slidably and pivotably supported in said wall opening, a tool clamping member slidably mounted on said upper leg, said tool clamping member being formed of relatively heavy spring steel and comprising end walls having apertures therethrough through which said upper leg member extends, said walls being inclined to the horizontal whereby the walls of said apertures grip the said upper leg for holding the tool clamping member firmly thereon.
2. The structure according to claim 1, wherein said clamping member further includes upper and lower walls for receiving a tool therebetween, and said upper wall being normally inclined to said lower wall and having a free edge portion engaged therewith.
3. The structure according to claim 1, wherein said clamping member further includes a vertical wall connecting said upper and lower walls adapted to be engaged Patented Dec. 27, 1955 3 by-an edgeof'saidtool for positioning and aligning-same.
4. The structure according to claim 1, wherein one of the endwalls of the clamping member is elongated to facilitate the releasing of the tool clamping member on the carriage.
