Description

Dec. 6, 1955 A. CONHAGEN LOCK STRIKING PLATE Filed Sept. 4, 1955 United States PatentO LOCK STRIKIN G PLATE Alfred Conhagen, New York, N. Y.
Application September 4, H53, Serial No. 378,617
4 Claims. (or. 292-264) This invention relates to newand useful improvements in lock-striking plates for doors.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a lock-striking plate for a door having means for holding the door in partly closed condition.
Another object of the invention isto provide a lockstriking plate for a door with improved means for attaching a chain for holding the door in partly closed condition, without marring the door or door jamb.
A specific object of the invention is to provide a lockstriking plate with an angled extension for attaching the ends of a door holding chain, whereby the chain is adapted to hang loosely from the striking plate.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a lock-striking plate of the kind described which is simple and rugged in construction and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. I
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a fragment of a door and door frame showing a lock-striking plate embodying one form of the invention in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the plane of the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on the plane of the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lock-striking plate.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the plane of the line 77 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view through the center of the chain supporting extension of the lock-striking plate showing a modified means for securing the chain to the lockstriking plate.
Fig. 9 is a front elevational view of the parts of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in Fig. 1 is shown a fragment of a door 10 and door frame or jamb 11. The door is shown with an ordinary escutcheon plate 12 secured thereto and a knob 13. The door has a covering 10 of sheet metal and the jamb has a similar covering 11. The door frame 11 is formed with the usual recess 11' and the sheet metal covering 11 is slotted in line with the recess to permit entrance of the ordinary locking bolt 10' into the recess.
In accordance with the present invention, a lock-striking plate indicated generally at 14 is secured to the door frame or jamb 11. The striking plate is formed of sturdy metal and comprises a fiat base portion 15 and a lateral extension 16 disposed in the plane of the base 15. The plate is formed with the usual slot 17 to permit the lock- 2,726,112 Patented Dec. 6 1955 ing bolt 10' to pass therethrough. The end wall edges of the slot 17 are extended and bent to form hooked portions 18 and 19 and above and below the slot are holes20 and 21,. respectively. In mounting the plate on the door frame, one hooked portion, for example, hooked portion 18 is hooked under the projecting upper end wall edge 11 of the slot in the covering 11 and slid upwardlya sufficient distance to permit the lower hooked portion 19 to swing over clear of the projecting lower end wall edge 11 of the slot in the covering 11 The hooked portion 19 is then dropped onto the lower end wall edge 11 into position. When the plate is thus positioned, fastening. elements, such as screws 20 and 21' are passed through the holes 20 and 21, respectively, to secure the striking plate to the indented face of the door frame. The interlocking hooked portions and end edges of the-slot in the covering 11 assist in holding the locking plate against displacement.
The lateral extension 16 of the lock-striking plate is formed with an integral degreeror right-angled bend constituting a chain. supporting extension .22. The extension 22 is spaced away from the outer face-of the door frame 11 leaving a clearance 22' between the extension and the door frame. The extension 22 is formed with a central slot 23 and with holes 24 and 25 spaced above and below the slot, respectively.
A link chain 26 for holding the door 10 in partly closed condition is attached to the striking plate 14 by inserting the end links a and b of the chain through the slot 23 in the chain supporting extension 22 and looping said links around a bar 27 positioned on the rear of the extension 22 in the clearance 22. 23 and is formed with right-angled bent flaring ends 27 which fit into the holes 24 and 25 of the base portion 15. The chain 26 is thus supported in loose suspended condition by the extension 22 and the looped chain may be swung over the door knob 13 whereby the door 10 may be opened sufficiently to view a person standing on the outside but not sufiicient to permit such person to come inside the door.
Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate modified means for attaching the end links a and b of the chain 26 to the chain supporting extension 22 of the striking plate 14. In this form of the invention, a substantially U-shaped pin 27 has its flaring ends 27 extended through openings in a disc-shaped plate 28 secured in an opening 29 formed in the chain supporting portion 22 of the striking plate. The chain hangs loosely from the U-shaped pin 27' and may be readily swung over the knob 13 of the door for holding the door closed.
In all other respects, the form of the invention shown in Figs. 8 and 9 is similar to the form shown in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, 1s:
1. A lock-striking plate comprising a striker having a chain mounting extension member, said member being bent at right angles thereto, said chain mounting member being provided with a slot, a looped chain, the free end chain links of said looped chain being fitted into the slot in said chain mounting member, means for hanging said looped chain from said mounting member, said hanging means including a pin riveted to said chain mounting extension member.
2. A lock striking plate comprising a striker having a The bar extends across the slot 3 chain mounting extension member, said member being bent at right angles thereto, said chain mounting member being provided with a slot,-"a looped chain, the free end chain links of said looped chain being fitted into the slot in said chain mounting member, means for hanging said looped'chain from said mounting member, said hanging means including a pin riveted to said chain mounting extension member, each free end of said pin being bent at right angles thereto, said chain mounting extension member also having a pair of holes, said pin ends being snugly fitted into said holes and riveted over to secure said pin permanently to the chain mounting extension member.
3. A lock-striking plate comprising a striker having a chain mounting extension plate member, said member being bent at right angles thereto, said chain mounting member being provided with a countersunk opening, a beveled disc-shaped plate fitted in said opening, a looped chain, means for hanging said chain from said beveled disc-shaped plate, said means including a U-shaped pin secured to said disc-shaped plate and adapted to receive loosely the end links of a chain to provide means for hanging the chain from the chain mounting member.
4. A lock-striking plate comprising a striker having a chain mounting extension plate member, said member being bent at right angles thereto, said chain mounting member being provided with a countersunk opening, a
beveled disc-shaped plate fitted in said opening, a looped chain, means for hanging said chain from said beveled disc-shaped plate, said means including a U-shaped pin secured to said beveled disc-shaped plate and adapted to receive loosely the end links of a chain to permit said chain to hang freely therefrom, said beveled disc-shaped plate having a pair of holes, said U-shaped pin having angled ends fitted in and secured to said holes.
