United Stat Patent r 2,724,601 a a i CARBON PAPER PAD T Robert J. Fuerst and Fritz Michel, New York, N. Y. Application July 11, 1951, Serial No. 236,122
2 5 Claims. c1. 282-22) The present invention relates to a pad of carbon paper sheets and more particularly to a padthe carbon paper sheets of which have equal sizes corresponding substantiallyto the size of a normalized letter sheet.
. It is an object. of the present invention to provide a pad of carbon paper sheets from which the carbon paper sheets can be easily removed. i It is another object of the present invention to provide a pad of carbon paper sheets in which each sheet afterthe removal thereof is provided with marks indicating the first and last line to be written or printed on the letter sheetto be used in connection with the carbon paper sheet.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a pad in which the carbon paper sheets can be easily marked with arbitrary marks by the operator.
. A padof carbon paper sheets according to the present invention comprises in its broadest aspects, a plurality of carbon paper sheets, the carbon paper sheets having equal sizes and being each provided with an edge portion being free of carbon, a folder having substantially the same size as the carbon paper sheets, and means for fastening the carbon paper sheets at the carbon free edge portion thereof to the folder adjacent to the folded edge thereof, the fastening means allowingto tear out said carbonpaper sheets from the folder and being arranged A plurality of carbon paper sheets 18, a single one of which is shown in Fig. 3, is fastened to the base portion 12 of the folder 10, for instance stapled by means of staples 20 and 22 forming two parts which are separated from each other by a predetermined distance. The carbon paper sheets 18 are provided with carbon free edge portions 24, respectively, with which the carbon paper sheets 18 are stapled together as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Preferably the parts 26 and 28 of each carbon free edge portion 24 which are arranged in the vicinity of the staples 20 and 22, respectively, are separated from the bulk of the edge portion 24 by perforations 30 and 32 which allow an easy removal of the carbon paper sheets from the pad, the edge portion 24 having after removal of the carbon paper sheet 18 two recesses 34 and36.
. a cut-away corner 42, for instance in the shape of a quarterof a circle, over which the letter sheets (not shown) protrude so that the carbon paper sheets can be easily removed from the letter sheets (not shown), by grasping the carbon paper sheets with one hand at I the carbon free edge portions 24 thereof which project soas to mark thecarbon free edge portions of the carbon paper sheets with marks having a predetermined location on the carbon paper sheets.
In a. preferredembodiment of the present invention a division is arranged on the outside of the folder along the folded edge thereof in alignment with, and above, the carbon freejedge portions of the carbon paper sheets, and meanssuch as a layer of wax are arranged on the inside of the folder underneath the division for marking the carbon free edgeportion of the uppermost one of the carbon papersheets withadditional marks according to indentations made on thedivision by the operator. a Preferably the folder has a base portion and a cover portion connected to the base portion along one edge of the folder being the folding edge adjoining to which the carbon free edge portions of the carbon paper sheets arefastened to the base portion.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention thefastening means include two parts separatcd from each other by a predetermined distance.
The novel features which are considered as character: istic for the inventionare set forth in particular in the appended claims. ,The invention itself, however, both as to itsjconstruction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages. thereof, will b'ebest understood fromthe following description beyond the letter sheets, and the letter sheets at the portions protruding over the cut-away corners 42. Preferably the carbon paper sheets are made oftcurl-proof carbon paper which lies flat under normal conditions. Instead of stapling the carbon paper sheets 18 to the base. portion 12 of the folder 10 other fastening means can be used, for instance a gluing applied to parts 26 and 28 of the carbon free edge portion 24. a a
t The cover portion 14 of thefolder 10 is provided with a cut-out 44 preferably arranged at the center .ofthe edgeopposite to the folding edge 16 in order to facili tatethe removal of carbon paper sheets without opening the folder '10.
Adjacent to the folding edge16 the cover portion 14 is provided with a scale 46 on the outside of the folder and means such as a layer of wax 48 are arranged on the inside of the folder underneath the scale 46 for marking the carbon free edge portion 24 of the uppermostone of the carbon paper sheets 18. v
The operation of this device is as follows:
The pad is taken into use in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the cover portion or sheet 14 folded above the carbon paper sheets 18 which are stapled to the base of specific embodiments when read in connection with the'accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the pad according to the invention with the folderthereof in folded, position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pad shown in Fig. 1 with thefolder thereof inopen position; and
.Fi'g 3"is a perspective view of a single carbon paper sheet after removal thereof from the pad.
Referring now to the drawings and first to Figs. 1 and 2, the pad comprises a folder generally denoted by 10 and including a base portion l2and a cover portion14 which 'are connected to each other along one edge portion 16'about which the folder 10 inthe position shown portion 12 of the folder. Carbon sheets 18 can now be removed from the pad by gripping them at the portion 50 thereof which is left free by the cut-out 44 of the cover portion 14. By pulling out a carbon paper sheet 18 from the pad the carbon free edge portion 24 thereof is recessed at 34 and 36 so that the outer points 38 and 40 can be used for an indication of the first and last lines of the letter sheets (not shown) to be used in connection with the carbon paper sheets the sizes of which are normalized and substantially equal. It should be understood, however, that the carbon free edge portion 24 of the carbon paper sheet 18 projects beyond theedge ofthe letter sheets. 1 d
If it is intended to mark special lines on the carbon paper sheet 18 which correspond to certain lines on the letter sheet (not shown), the operator marks the appropriate subdivision of the scale 46 with his fingernail, a
the removal thereof.
pencil or the like. In consequence thereof corresponding marks such as 52 are transferred to the carbon free edge portion 24 of the uppermost carbon paper sheet 18 before In this way a very simple but reliable marking of the carbon paper sheet 18 is achieved.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of pads of carbon paper sheets differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a pad the carbon paper sheets have equal sizes, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modificationsand structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Withoutfurther analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by v applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this in.- vention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
