United States Patent ORNAMENTAL KERCHIEF Clarence W. Fisher,-Elizabethtown, N. C.
Application June 11, 1954, Serial No. 436,153
Claims. (Cl. 2-279) 'This'invention relates to'new and useful improvements in anornamental'kerchief.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of an ornamental 'kerchief together with novel means for supporting the kerchief in the breast pocket of a coat, jacket, or the like, for displaying the kerchief positioned in the breast pocket.
Another object of this invention is to provide an ornamental kerchief having asingleor a plurality of projecting members thereon for projecting above the upper edge of abreast pocket in the usual manner-as worn inthe breast pocket of a mans suit coat or the like.
Still another important object of this invention is to provide an ornamental kerchief whichmay be positioned in the breast pocket of a wearer in either of two positions wherein a plain orpointed end of the kerchief may show above the breastpocket thereby enhancing the appearance of the ornamental kerchief.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide-an ornamental kerchief which is simple in construction, easily secured in position, versatile in arrangement, well adapted for its intended purposes and-relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the ornamental kerchief of the present invention positioned in the breast pocket of a coat with the pointed edges projecting above the upper edge of the breast pocket;
Figure 2 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1 showing the ornamental kerchief of the present invention in inverted position;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view with a portion thereof broken away showing the ornamental kerchief of the present invention having a plurality of triangular members projecting upward therefrom for projecting above the upper edge of the breast pocket;
Figure 4 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken substantially along section line 4-4 of Figure 3 showing the details of construction of the thicknesses of material utilized in the construction of the present invention;
Figure 5 is a group plan view showing the blanks for forming the triangular members secured to the upper edge of the rectangular portion of the ornamental kerchief;
Figure 6 is a top plan view showing the construction of the blank which is utilized to form the lower or rectangular portion of the kerchief of this invention;
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the details of construction of the extensible spring member for securing the ornamental kerchief within the breast pocket; and
Figure 8 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the ornamental kerchief having a single triangular 2 membersecured thereto for projecting above the upper edge of the breast pocket.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it-will be seen'that the numeral 10 generally designates the ornamental kerchief of the present invention for'positioning in a breast pocket 12 in a coat or jacket as designated by the numeral 14. The pocket 12 is provided with the usual free upper edge 16 forming an entrance into the pocket 1'2.
The ornamental kerchief lll includes a rectangular portion 18 formed 'from a blank of material 20 which is folded into three overlapping sections with flap 22 adjacent the upper edge of the fold line 24 which the blank '20 is folded into to form the rectangular portion 18. The lower edge of the blank 20 is turned under 'and stitched as indicated by the numeral 26 and the upper portion of the blank 20 is reversely bent along bend lines 2-8 andstitched similar to the'lower edge thereof, thereby forming arectangular member 18. An extensible member generally indicated by the numeral 30 is positioned in the rectangular member 18 between stitch lines 32 and 34, which are positioned on opposite sides of the slots 22-wherein the slots -22permit the extensible member 30 to project outwardly from the rectangular portion 18.
"The extensible member 30 is provided with a centrally located tube 36 having a pair of outwardly extending rods 38 slidable therein. The outer end of each of the rods 38 is provided with a wire coil 40 with a pointed member '42 projecting therefrom for engagement with the'inter-ior sidewalls of the breast pocket 12. A compression-coil spring 44 is disposed within the tubular member 30 and the'rods 38 have a projection 46 for engaging each end of the spring 44 wherein the rods'38 may be urged inwardly against the action of the coil spring 44 sothat the ornamental kerchief 10-of the pres'- ent invent-ion may be easily inserted'in the breast pocket Referring now specifically to Figure 5, it willbe'seen thata plurality of generally polygonalblanks50 and 52 are provided wherein 'the blanks will be folded :along their longitudinal center lines thereby forming generally triangular pointed members 54 and 56 with the blanks 52 forming generally isosceles triangles 54 and the blanks 50 forming gen'erally right triangular members 56. The triangular members 54 and 56 are secured to the upper edge of the rectangular member 18 by the stitching 32 and the free edges of the triangular members 54 and 56 are reversely bent and stitched substantially in the nature of a hem. The right triangular members 56 are provided on each remote end of the rectangular member 18 and form substantially an extension of the side edges thereof. The two central triangular members 54 are provided with two tapered surfaces thereby forming a neat and attractive appearance when the triangular members 54 and 56 are positioned above the free edge 16 of the breast pocket 12 with the rectangular portion 18 positioned within the breast pocket 12 and retained therein by the extensible member 30 wherein the parted ends 42 engage the inside of the breast pocket 12.
Referring specifically to Figure 2, it will be seen that the ornamental kerchief 10 may be inverted with the triangular members 54 and 56 pointed downwardly or disposed within the pocket 12 with the rectangular portion 18 positioned thereabove for displaying the rectangular portion 18 of the ornamental kerchief 10.
Referring now specifically to Figure 8, it will be seen that a modified form of the ornamental kerchief 58 is provided with a rectangular portion 18 and the extensible member similar to the construction of Figure 3. Secured to the upper edge of the rectangular member 18 is a single enlarged triangular member 60 which may be positioned above the upper free edge 16 of the breast pocket 12 for display in a similar manner as the construction of Figure 3.
Obviously, the device may be constructed of any suitable cloth material'or other flexible material utilized in ornamental kerchiefs for positioning in breast pockets of coats, jackets, or the like. It will be seen that the extensible member 30 retains the ornamental kerchief 10 in a positive desired position thereby retaining the device in a neat appearing condition and retaining the pocket in a taut and neat condition.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
