3 Claims. (Cl. QTL-123) This invention relates to plotvs and more specifically to the moulldboards or, as they are sometimes designated, the breasts thereof. The invention is of the class of plows disclosed in our copending application Serial No. 304,662, tiled August l5, 1952.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a ribbed mouldboard having spaced-apart ilangeless ribs which are substantially dat in transverse section at their lower end portions and curved in transverse section at their upper end portions to provide an especially effective ribbed mouldboard with the ribs thereof of more simple construction than -those disclosed in our copending application referred to above.
Another important object is to provide a ribbed mouldboard comprising spaced-apart ilexible metallic ribs, capable of angular adjustment so that the mouldboard may be warped as a whole and the ribs assume stepped positions at their upper portions, and which ribs are manipulated by angularity adjusting means of simple construction, dilfering from the means, disclosed in our aforesaid copending application, for angular adjustment of the ribs of that application.
A further important object is to provide a mouldboard as described which causes soil, dislodged by the plowshare to move upwardly along the mouldrboard and not simply fan therefrom along the lower longitudinal edges of the mouldboard.
Additionally, an important object is to provide a mouldboard as detailed, in which the upper end portions of the ribs will increase, when properly manipulated, in angularity relative to the lower portions thereof so that there will be provided a stepped upper assembly of transversely curved ribs to cause effective breaking up of the clods travelling up the mouldboard with the loose soil and the resultant material will not scatter but will be turned over and deposited in 'the most effective manner for desirable plowing results.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a portion of this disclosure and in which drawings:
Fig. l is a bottom plan of one form of the mould'board.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, substantially on the line A-B of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the lower portion of one of the similar ribs of the mouldboard, substantially on the line C--D of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the rib referred to above, substantially on the line E-F of Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of a second form of the mouldboard.
Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, substantially on the line G-H of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a side view of a plow frame upon which the mouldboard of Figs. 1 4 is mounted.
Fig. 8 is a top plan of the showing in Fig. 7 but with the frame partly in horizontal section.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration are shown two forms of the invention, the mouldboard orv breast A' includes a plurality of elongated, spaced-.apart ribs 3 of springy preferably metallic material, as steel, each rib having a substantially fiat surface or outer face at its lower portion 1 merging into a curved surface, being outwardly transversely curved, at the upper portion 2, with the curvature shown by way of example in Fig. 4. The ribs are closely spaced apart. Each `rib 3 is provided with first mounting means at its lower end for movable attachment of the rib to a plowshare 24 by way of a plate 5 secured to the plowshare and having a rearwardly projecting end ange 6 substantially normal to the share body. The means is shown as a relatively broad hook 4 (for example, of a width substantially one-half the width of the rib), preferably of J-shape in longitudinal section, which is firmly secured to the rib, in any approved manner, as by welding. The hook 4 projects beyond the end of the rib and is adapted to hook into one of a plural-ity of spaced-apart slots 7 carried by the flange 6. The hook 4 has a slightly loose lit in its slot 7 and the hook provides a hinge with its pivotal axis substantially paralleling the upper edge of the plowshare so that the rib 3 may freely rise and fall tota limited extent. At its upper end, each rib is provided with a rearwardly-extending ange 8 lixedly sup porting a lug or projection 9 adapted to have a sliding lit in any one of a plurality of spaced-apart openings 1l in an elongated plate. lil, which plate is provided with an elongated slot 10,. Means to detachably secure the lugs 9 .against accidental removal from `their associated openings 11 in the plate 10, may be cotterpins 12 extending through suitable openings in the free end portions of the lugs. p
The slot 10 is adapted to receive the billY portion of a hook 13 mounted upon the upwardly-extending portion or post of the plow frame 23, as by the bracket 36.
Means for manipulating or operating the mouldboard is preferably substantially similar to that disclosed in our copending application referred to above and comprise an elongated handle 25 extending along, but spaced from, the post of the frame 23 and limited in movement at its upper end portion 25 by a bracket 30 carried by the post and provided With a slot (shown in Fig. 8) through which the end portion 25 loosely extends. An inwardly-extending projection 31, extending transversely into the slot, provides two shoulders 32 and 32' for selective abutment of the portion 25 thereagainst, with spaces between the shoulder-s and the end walls of the slot. Additionally, there is an intermediate space 34 between the projection 31 and the facing side wall of the slot to accommodate the end portion 25 so the latter may be slid along this space 34 or may abut the projection 31. The lower end portion of the handle 25 extends substantially normal to the upper end portion thereof through a suitable bore in the base of lthe frame 23, and is provided, at its free end, with means for attachment to the ange 6. The means may comprise a lug 27 secured to the plate 5 to extend substantially vertically downwardly and provided with an opening to receive the screw-threaded free end of lower end portion of the handle 25 to project forwardly therefrom and receive a suitable nut 29. It is preferred that the sole 22 attached to the base of the frame 23 be provided with an upwardly-extending projection 28 having an opening to receive a part of the free end of the lower portion of the handle 2S and disposed between the lug 27 and base of the frame. The sole 22 is provided with a forwardly-extending stub 3S to receive the under portion 24' of the share 24. Oscillation of the handle 25 will os'cillalte the share with consequent movement of the mouldboard,
The mouldboard B of Figs. and 6 and its association with a plow and plowshare differ from the mouldboard A only inthe rst mounting means for movably attaching the lower portions of the ribs 18 to the plowshare, by way of a plate 14, somewhat like the plate 5, attached to the plowshare. The plate 14 has a ange 16 somewhat like the flange 6 but is also provided with a downturned portion 17 extending from the flange 16 and substantially paralleling the body of the plate 14. This body is provided with a nut-accommodating opening 19, larger in diameter than `the outer diameter of a nut to be described, and the portion 17 is provided with a bolt shank-accommodating opening 19 and the axis of the two openings 19 and 19 being coincident. To the rearward side of the lower portion of each rib 18 is xedly secured, as by conventional welding, a nut 20 which extends freely in the opening 19 with up-anddown play and, through the opening 19 freely extends.
the shank 21 of a bolt with the screw-threaded end portion of the shank retained by the nut and the head 21' outwardly of the portion 17 and being of greater diameter than that of the opening 19 whereby the n'b 18 and portion 17 are detachably secured together. In eiect, the construction disclosed provides a hinge, functioning as does the hinge just mentioned.
The ribs of our mouldboards do not rotate as a whole. They are adapted to warp or twist particularly at their upper end portions while the outer surfaces of their lower portions will remain in nearly the same plane, with the warp or twist very slight. As a result, the soil which is penetrated and plowed up by the share 24 and deposited upon the lower portions of the ribs will travel up the ribs and be broken up, turned and dropped by the upper portions of the ribs when transversely warped and disposed in stepped relation.
Various changes may be made to the -forms of the invention herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
