2 Claims. (Cl. 177) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for removing the scales from fish and more particularly to a brush of novel design for accomplishing this purpose.

An important object of the invention is to provide a brush constructed with metal bristles projecting at the underside of an elongated handle and constructing the handle for gripping at each end by the thumb and fingers of a person for effectively gripping the brush while moving the same back and forth horizontally over the body of the fish.

Another object of the invention is to construct the brush with relatively stiff bristles adjacent one end to raise the edges of the scales into a position for effective removal by the remaining bristles of the brush.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is effective in its performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as rnore fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view illustrating the relative stiffness of the respective groups of bristles; and

Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line S-S of Figure l.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a brush handle which is of generally rectangular shape and of a length corresponding substantially to the width of the hand of a person.

An opening 6 extends transversely through the handle from side to side thereof and adjacent one end of the handle, and a recess 7 is formed in the opposite end of the handle and above which the top of the handle is formed with a tapering overhanging lip 8. Each side of the. handle is formed with a longitudinally extending groove 9.

A relatively small group of bristles 10 of brass or other suitable metal are embedded in the bottom of the brush to extend downwardly therefrom adjacent the opening 6, and the remaining area of the underside of the brush is provided with a relatively larger group of bristles 11 likewise constructed of brass or other suitable metal and of a length slightly greater than the length of the bristles 10. Bristles 10 likewise are substantially stiffer in construction that the relatively more flexible bristles 11.

Patented May 28, 1957 ICS The brush is used by engaging the thumb of a hand of a person in the opening 6 and engaging the little finger of the hand in the recess 7 under the lip 8 so that the bristles 10 and 11 will extend downwardly at the palm of the hand when the latter is positioned horizontally. The fingers of the hand are gripped in the longitudinal groove 9 at the side of the handle, and the brush may be gripped in either the right or the left hand of a person.

The brush is moved forwardly and backwardly over the fish to be scaled and is initially tilted downwardly at the end of the brush provided with the relatively stiff group of bristles 10 and in rocking movement to raise the edges of the scales of the fish, as well as to loosen any stubborn scales thereon. During the continued forward and backward movement of the brush over the fish, the remaining group of bristles 11 free the scales and remove the same from the fish.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A manually held and manipulatable special purpose fish scaling brush comprising a substantially rectangular rigid backing provided on its bottom with fish scaling bristles, a handle commensurate in length with and mounted integrally atop said backing and provided along its opposite longitudinal sides with channel-like open ended grooves, said grooves serving to accommodate certain of the fingers of the hand of the user, onetransverse end of said handle having a notch formed therein and defining a concave recess, said recess being adapted to accommodatingly seat at least one finger of the users hand, that portion of the handle directly above said recess being fashioned into an extension, said extension projecting beyond and overhanging said recess and also the corresponding end portion of said backing, and a transverse opening formed in the opposite end portion of said handle inwardly of the extreme opposite end and of a diameter at least commensurate the width of the cooperating grooves, said opening being adapted to permit the users thumb to be passed therethrough and temporarily lodged therein while the brush is being used.

The structure defined in claim l wherein said thumb opening is confined to the area of the handle of having said grooves formed therein, and said bristles being characterized by relatively short and long groups of bristles projecting laterally from said bottom, said short group of bristles being confined to that end of the backing adjacent to the position of said thumb opening and the long bristles constituting the remaining group of bristles substantially covering the remainder of the bottom of said backing.
