SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,563, dated May 29, '1883.

To all whom it may concern p Be it known that L FEENANDO G. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas,

` 5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Barrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain improve- "ro ments in covers for barrels; and it has for its- V12o the cover, in dotted lines, in an elevated position.

The letter A indicates a barrel of ordinary construction, and B a cover having at its periphery a down ward-extendin g flan ge, B'. The

`2 5 said cover is-adapted to set over the upper edge of the barrel, the flange extending around .the said upper edge, so as to make a secure joint. At the center is secured a knob, (l, by

When uncovered the top is thrown back until it rests on the piece shown in dotted lines, when the knob catches the inner `edge of the barrel and `holds it up inan elevated position, so as to 4o leave the mouth open for ingress to the inside.

It will be seen by myinvention that the top l or cover of the barrel maybe readily placed out of the way over the mouth ot' the same, and still be heldconvenientlyin position to be 45 replaced.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

A barrel-top consisting of a ianged` disk 5o having a central knob on its under side, adapted to catch the upper edge of the barrel and hold the top-in an elevated position,substantially as and for the purpose specied.
