UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL BLOOHMAN AND GEORGE E. EVANS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, GAL.
BED OR PILLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,979, dated May 22, 1883.
' I Application filed December 12, 1882. (No model?) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMANUEL BLOOHMAN and GEORGE E. EVANS, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Bed or Pillow; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description thereof.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in pillows for beds or for mattresses and similar articles; and it consists of an exterior body made of any flexible air-tight material, so that it may be inflated, and having a series of elastic flexible braces uniting its sides and top and bottom to hold them in place and to equalize the expansion and contraction, as shown in a former patent granted to us. In combination with these flexible braces we employ rings, loops, or guides at the points where the braces approach or cross each other, and attach them to one set, so that the others may pass through the loops, and the whole fabric will thus be steadied, as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a section.
When made in the form ofa pillow, as shown in our present drawings, the sides, top, and bottom merge or curve into each'other; but when made larger, to form a mattress, the sides and ends will be somewhat more Vertical and the top and bottom slightly flattened; but the construction is similar in each case.
A is a pillow or mattress, which is made of any suitable impervious material. A lockingnozzle, B, is fitted into one side or end, by which the pillow may be inflated with air and the opening tightly closed. In order to retain the sides and top in the proper positions and resist the expansive force of the air, as well as to equalize the strains due to the varying pressure and the mobile quality of the confined air, flexible tension braces or stays Gextend across from side to side and end to end, and also from top to bottom, as shown. These braces may also be elastic, if desired.
each other.
D D are rings, loops, or guides, which are fixed to the braces at points where the longitudinal and transverse or Vertical braces cross If the braces are not elastic, these guides may be made elastic; or the braces may be elastic, if desired. The guides D are fixed to the longitudinal braces at intervals and at such points that the transverse braces will pass through them. These may also be fixed tothe intersecting vertical braces, and will thus serve to prevent any swaying movements. The guides, which are fixed to the transverse braces or stays in the same manner, have the longitudinal braces passing through them, and each of these sets of guides may also have stays, which connect them with the top and bottom of the pillow, thus making the whole very rigid as far as side or end movements are concerned, but yielding and flexible vertically.
We are aware that air-tight pillows and beds have been formed and secured by means of a series of eyelets; but such we do not claim as our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A pillow'or bed composed of impervious flexible material, with the longitudinal and transverse stays G, in combination with the rings or guides D at their points of intersection, substantially as herein described.
2. A pillow or bed composed of impervious flexible material, with a means for inflation, and having the longitudinal and transverse stays O and the rings D, in combination with the vertical stays and rings intersecting the horizontal ones, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands.
EMANUEL BLOCHMAN. GEORGE R. EVANS.
