SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,847, dated May 15, 1883.

My invention relates to a stopper to prevent bottles being lled when once emptied or partly emptied, so that a non-genuine articlesuch as bitters, wines, Stof-cannot be put into a bottle and sold for genuine.

My invention consists in an improved construction, hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represen t-s the neck of a bottle. B represents the body ofthe stopper, having a perforated shell, C, at its lower end, which incloses a ball-valve, E. The bottom of the shell is open, as showmforming a seat, D, for the valve E. Now, it will be seen that when the bottle is turned wrong end up the liquid will flow ont freely through the opening in the bottom ofthe shell, from which the ball will gravitate, and through the perforated top, and then when the bottle is turned back the ball will fall to its seat and close the opening in the bottom of the shell, thus preventin g any liquid from entering. The bottle is originally filled before inserting the stopper, and then the interior ofthe neck of the bottle (No model.)

coated with a suitable cement or plaster-ofparis, F, (or the cement may be placed upon the stopper before inserting it,) and then the stopper inserted, as shown.

The stopper may be made of any suitable material; but I prefer to make it of glass.

A common cork may be inserted into the stopper B, if desired, when the bottle is being shipped or not used.

l claim as my invention- 1. Thecombnatiomwithabottle,ofa stopper permanently secured by cement wholly within the mouth of the bottle, said stopper having a. valve located on the outside of the inner opening to prevent the pouring in of liquid into the bottle through the stopperafter the stopper is inserted, and a perforated shell or cover over said valve to retain the valve within its chamber, While permitting the contents to flow ont when desired, as set forth.

2. In combination with a bottle, a stopper secured in the month of the bottle, and having a shell on its lower end having a 'perforated top and an open bottom, and inclosing a ball valve, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of bottle A, stopper B,

held in the bottle by cement F, perforated shell C, with valve-seat D, and ball-valve E, inclosed in the shell C, all substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
