Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ALDRICH, OF IVASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
WATER-ELEVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,765, dated April 10, 1860.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES ALDRIoi-r, of )Vashington City, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in )Vater-Elevators, and the fol lowing is a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of this speciication.
Figure l, vrepresents a perspective view. Fig. shows a side elevation open with the internal arrangement. Figs. 3, 4, 5, G, and T, are detached views of the parts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe it referring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon.
(64,) is the cover, of the elevator, t'o the outside of which is attached a latch (79,), which operates on the ratchet to which is attached a crank (6,) the shaft of the crank forming a windlass by having a grooved pulley (6,) over which the rope (9,) passes, it being pressed inte the groove by the wheel (6,), and passing down through the socket (8,) on the inclined piece where it is contained in the box (7c) made to' receive it. In the grooved pulley (6,) there is a pin or bolt (72) sliding in toward the center, which` will be thrown out by the centrifugal force of the wheel and lock the windlass, by reason of the bolt, (f,) catching into the guide, (7L) to prevent the bucket (m) from running back into the well should the latch (6,) not be in place. to the back end of the bolt (7,) just suficient to hold its weight. The girder (z',) extends horizontally under the windlass, to which is secured the guide (7a) it forming the socket (8,) and has a projection against which the bolt (f,) locks. As the bucket (11,) is drawn up, the bail (m,) comes in contact with rods 77,) extending across parallel with the girder which turns it in position and being guided by pieces (7, 73) is sure to place one edge of the bucket under the hook (160,) and then being raised sufficient will empty its contents into the spout in the recess (d.)
It will readily be seen, that by my improved water elevator, and the manner of its construction, there is no possibility of the There is a slight spring (25,) attached 1:
bucket running back into the well, should the latch or ratchet get out of order, and the crank endangering any one standing by.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The mechanical arrangement of the pulleys (6, 6,) the sliding bolt (f,) and spring (t.) The rope (9,) the guide (h,) and socket (8,) the rods (Z, Z,) and guides (0313), or their equivalents for the purposes set JAMES ALDRICI-I.
' forth.
)Vitnessesz EDM. F. BROWN, J. B. VooDRUFF.
