DRUM WITH SUPPORTED FIBER BOTTOM Filed Feb. 24, 1955 I i 4 2 f 1 z FIG. I
INVENT OR moms H. a/aas JR.
BY y fiwdm ATTORNEYS DRUM WITH SUPPORTED FIBER BOTTOM Thomas H. Gibbs, Jr., Van Wert, Ohio, assignor' to Cantinental Can Company, Inc., Ne w York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application February 24, 1955, Serial No. 490,290 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-55) I drawn steel supporting member which will prevent any sagging of the bottom heading under the weight of the enlarged film roll.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through the bottom portion of the fiber drum for film rolls embodying the improvement, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the drum shown in Figure 1.
The invention has to do with the improvement in a fiber drum used in shipping film rolls and the like. The improved drum includes a convolutely wound body portion 1. The bottom end of the drum is closed by a bottom heading which includes a kraft paper tray 2 having a depending flange 3 dimensioned so as to fit within the body of the drum. Disposed within this tray and contacting the uuderface thereof is a fiber board disc 4. Said disc is dimensioned so as to extend all the way across the bottom end of the drum and abut against the flange 3 of the tray. Beneath this disc 4 is a second solid fiber board disc 5; said disc 5 is the same diameter as the disc 4 and abuts against the tray flange. Inserted within the bottom end portion of the drum is a fiber collar 6 which is dimensioned so that its lower face is substantially flush with the lower end of the ,body wall 1. This collar is secured to the body wall by stitching 7 which may be in the form of staples or any other suitable fastening means. The second disc 5 has a central opening 8. Extending through this opening is a depending drawn steel supporting member 9. Said supporting member has a cylindrical wall 10 and a closed bottom end 11. At the upper end of the cylindrical wall 10 is a laterally extending flange 12. The flange 12 lies between the fiber board disc 4 and the fiber disc 5 and extends for a comparatively limited distance between said discs so as to make a very rigid connection between the supporting member and the discs. The vertical wall of the support is dimensioned so that the lower face of the bottom end 11 of the support lies in a plane which is common to the lower edge of the body wall. This drawn steel member provides a support for the central portion of the bottom heading and will prevent any sagging of the heading which might result in a telescoping of the film supported on end on the bottom heading. While the supporting member is illustrated as having a closed end, the end may have an opening therein or may be omitted and the lower end of the wall 10 rolled into a hollow supporting bead.
In the commonly owned application of Harold A. Bergstrom, Serial Number 488,867, filed January 17,
, unitgd States P wn 2,775,385 Patented Dec. 25, 1956 v of ,thebody wall. The present structure wherein the bottom heading ,is of fiber board to which is attached a drawn steel supporting member, has advantages over the all steel bottom heading. The fiber member when distorted, such as caused by the dropping of the drum on an edge, will tend to revert back to its original shape and position. With the steel drawn heading, a dropping of the drum may permit a sharp kink in the metal which would be transferred to the roll of film and the kink would remain there and not spring back.
In Figure 1 a film roll is illustrated as placed in the container and supported on the bottom heading. The film roll includes a fiber tubular member 13 on which is wound the roll of film 14. The layers of the film extend at right angles to the bottom heading and are substantially flush with the lower end of the tubular member 13 on which they are wound, the end of the tubular member and the ends of the layers of film will rest on the fiber tray member 2 and will be supported by the discs 4 and 5 which in turn rest on the collar 6 secured by stitching to the body wall.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of the construction illustrated can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
I 1. A fiber drum for film rolls and the like comprising a convolutely wound body, a heading for closing the bottom end of the drum including a kraft paper tray having a depending peripheral flange fitting within the body of the drum, a solid fiber board disk beneath and contacting withsaid tray and spaced upwardly from the bottom end of the body, a second solid fiber board disk beneath said first named fiber board disk and of the same diameter, a fiber collar engaging the inner face of the tray flange on which said fiber board disks are supported and terminating downwardly on a common plane with the lower end extremity of the body, means for securing said collar to the body of the drum through the flange of the kraft paper tray, said lower fiber board disk having a circular opening centrally thereof and a drawn steel supporting member disposed in said opening, said supporting member having a cylindrical wall provided with a laterally extending flange at its upper end, said flange being disposed to lie between the fiber board disks with its upper face contacting the underface of the upper fiber board disk and its lower face contacting the upper face of the lower fiber board disk, and said supporting member having a depth for extending below the upper fiber board disk the same distance the lower end extremities of the body and the collar extend below said upper fiber board disk so as to support said bottom heading against sagging under the weight of the film roll.
2. A fiber drum for fihn rolls and the like comprising a convolutely wound body, a heading for closing the bottom end of the drum including a stiff paper tray having a depending peripheral flange fitting within the body of the drum, a solid fiber board disk beneath and contacting with said tray and spaced upwardly from the bottom end of the body, a second solid fiber board disk beneath said first named fiber board disk and of the same diameter, a fiber collar engaging the inner face of the tray flange, on which said fiber board disks are supported and terminating downwardly on a common plane with .the lower end extremity of the body, means for securing said collar to the body of the drum, said lower fiber and a drawn steel supporting memberdisposed in said opening, said supporting member having a cylindrical Wall provided with a laterally extending flange at its upper end and with a supporting bottom wall traversing its lower end, said flange being disposed to lie b'etvve'e'n the' fiber board disks with its upper face contactingthe' underface of the upper fiber board disk and its lower face contacting the upper face of the lower fiberboard disk, and said supporting member having a depth for extending below the upper fiber board disk the same distance the lower end extremities of the body and the collar extend below said-upper-fiber board-disk so-that the supporting-mem her bottom wall acts to support said bottom heading against sagging under the Weight of the film roll.
