Description
Nov. 20, 1956 s. JANNACE CONCEALED HINGE OF SLIDABLE EXTENSIBLE TYPE Filed April 50, 1951 I n venlor J); YER/O /A/V/VA CE 2v? C7 7, 7 y I Attorneys CONCEALEI), HINGE on QLIDA'BLE EXTENSIBLE TYPE Saverio Jannace, Milan, Italy, assignor to Italo Rizzieri, Milan, Italy Application April 30, 1951, Serial No. 223,718 Claims priority, application Italy May 4, 1950 2 Claims. 01. 16-179) This invention relates in general to a hinge and more particularly has reference to a concealed type of hinge of the slidable extensible type. I
An object of this invention is to provide a hinge having cooperating slides of annular sector profile, for joining two elements of any type which ought to be free to turn with respect to each other through an angle greater than 90 around their adjacent corners, without interfering with each other and without the hinge, in its closed position, being visable at the outside. It finds application particularly in the mounting of doors for furniture, closets and cabinets in general on their posts, of covers and shutters on fixed frames, of automobile doors on the body frames and so on.
Said hinge comprises two plates for attachment to the elements to be joined together, and each plate is fastened to a slide having the shape of a sector of a cylinder, extending from the plate into the thickness of the corresponding element to which the plate is attached. The axis of the slides, constituting the axis of the hinge and parallel to the edge of said element, is located externally to the thickness of the element. The slides are slidably combined with at least one guide piece in the form of a cylindrical or annular sector, coaxial with but independent from the slides and positioned to extend into the thickness of the elements to be hinged through openings in the two fixing plates. Means are provided for ensuring a constant connection between the slides and guide body and for limiting the stroke of the slides with respect to said body.
Said hinge is susceptible of many embodiments, one of which is represented only by way of non-limitative example in the accompanying drawings, to which the following detailed description relates. In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 are two schematic sections at right angles to the axis of rotation of one embodiment in closed positions respectively;
Fig. 3 is a somewhat diagrammatic radial sectional view of the device of Figs. 1 and 2, detached from the elements to be hinged; and
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the hinge in open position.
In the represented embodiment of the invention, the hinge is intended to join two parts, of which one is fixed and marked F, and the other is movable and marked'M. It appears clear, however, that the function of these two parts could be inverted without altering anything of What will hereinatfer be disclosed.
As shown in the drawings, the hinge is composed of two plates of rectangular form 1 and 2, respectively, capable of being fixed to elements F and M to which are fixed curved members 1, 2', respectively, shaped as cy lindrical or annular sectors with a common axis external to the thickness of elements F and M to be hinged together. Said curved members, as it appears from Fig. 3, are spaced in the direction of the axis 0 and project on each side of plates 1 and 2, which plates having openings 3 and 4 to receive said members, the shape of which United States Patent 0 5 men'ts' F and M, respectively, while their parts projecting 2,770,834 Patented Nov. 20, 1956 2 will be described later. Members 1" and 2 are positioned, both when the hinge is closed as well as when it is open, with their projecting par-ts rearwards of plates 1 and 2 in "cylindrical segmental housings 5 and '6 of elein fron't'of plates -1 and 2 are positioned, when "the hinge is closed, inside of the said housings 6 and 5, respectivel'y, after having passed through openings 4'an'd 3 of plates 2. and 1 p Members 1" and 2 are mounted circularly slidably inside or intermediate slides 12 0f annular sector profile and which are cireula rly slidably mounted in their own "ular guides 7 and *8 machined in a guide body 9 with eyrindrieai ax is'com 'rn'on to both and coinciding with 'the axis 0, the external surface of which is visible only when the hinge is open. In order to render members 1' and 2 invisible in this position, there are provided covering elements 10 and 11 coaxial with guide body 9 and slidably mounted with strong friction thereon, which reenter in the body in closed position and can be drawn out circularly from the guide 9 by the holding action exerted upon holders 10, 11' by plates 1 and 2. Between guide sector 9 and the intermediate slides 12, as well as between the said slides and the members 1 and 2', there are interposed engaging means consisting in pins 12' of the intermediate slides 12 and pins 1" of the members 1' and 2, respectively, which engage with slots in the guide body 9 and in the intermediate slides 12, respectively, to act as stroke limiting means.
As it appears from Fig. 2, a hinge of this type allows a turning of of element M in respect to element F. If as represented, axis 0, besides being external of the thickness of elements F and M, is also displaced in respect to their joining line L, with the turning is also obtained a lateral displacement of element M in relation to element F corresponding to the distance of axis 0 from the joining line L.
It is clear that the above-illustrated embodiment is only one example of the practical application of the invention, which is capable of many other modifications.
