" GEORGE HOGAN, on NEW BRIGHTON, NEW YORK.
INDICATOR FOR SCHOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,819, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed August 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brighton, Richmond county, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Indicators for Schools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for recording and displaying the grade or meritorious I0 standing of the respective scholars in a school,
and for other similar purposes; and it consists in the combination of a series of dovetailed name-receiving slides, with a panel havingits face provided with horizontal grooves for the reception of the slides, and with a vertical marking strip or column adjacent to one end of the grooves, so that when the slides are inserted in the grooves they are firmly held in position and are capable of beinginterchanged at pleasure, while the marking-strip is a medium common to all the slides for containing the grades of the scholars. One end of the grooves is closed to arrest the slides and bring them a to the proper symmetrical positions. Opposite to the grooves on the face of the panel, and at the end opposite to the grade-marking strip, are consecutive numbers for denoting the numerical standing of the scholars, while on the upper part of the panel is a marking-strip designed 0 to receive a date, such strip being arranged in a portion of the panel and some of the slides.
proper relation to a suitableinscription on the panel, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a face view, showing some of the slides partiallydrawn out to expose the grooves. Fig. 2 is avertical section on the line a: m, Fig.
. 1; and Fig.3 isa broken sectional view through Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the name-receivin g slides; B, the panel; 0, its grooves; l), the grade-marking strip, and E the date-marking strip.
The slides A are dovetailed in cross-section, and hence are firmly retained in position, due to their shapes, and the desired names are printed on the slides; or, in lieu thereof, a facing of slate or the like may be used for temporarilyreceiving the names. Each slide, moreover, is provided with a finger-button,f, to fa cilitate its adjustment.
The panel B is composed of wood, eardboard, or other stiff material, and it is inclosed in a frame, B; but, if desired, this frame may be omitted.
The grooves (3 extend in horizontal planes side by side with each other, and they are formed by means of strips 0, which are dovetailed and secured to the face of the panel B in the proper manner to receive the slides A between them. Nextto one end of the grooves O the panel B is provided with'a clear, 9, for closing such end of the grooves, the other end being left open, and hence when the slides are inserted in'the grooves they are arrested by the cleat, thus taking the proper symmetrical positions.
The grade-marking strip D is situated at or adjacent to one end of the grooves O-namely, the open end-and it extends vertically the entire height or aggregate width of the grooves, so that it is common to all the slides. preferred to make this strip Dot slate or other similar material, and to sin-k the same into the panel B, flush with its face, as shown in Fig. 2. At or adjacen t to the closed end ofthe grooves 0 the face of the panel B is marked with consecutive numbers, one opposite to each'groove, as shown in Fig. 1 and hence the numerical standing of the scholars can beindioated, as well as the grades.
The date-marking strip E is arranged on the upper part of the panel B, in proper relation to an inscription denoting the week or other period "to which the whole appertains or is made to apply, and it is preferably made, like the strip D, of an argillaceous material sunken into the panel.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device for receiving and displaying the grade or standing of scholars in a school, consistin g of a panel having its face provided with a series of horizontal parallel dovetailed grooves, a series of removable name-receiving slides having dovetailed upper and loweredges, and a grade-markin g strip secured vertically to the panel atone end of the dovetailed grooves, substantially as described.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the removable dovetailed name-receiving slides, with the panel having its face provided with a series of horizontal parallel grooves forthe reception of the slides, closed at one end, but open atthe other end, and with a vertical grade-markin g strip at one end of the grooves.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the removable dovetailed name-receiving slides, with the panel having its face provided with a series of horizontal parallel grooves for the reception of the slides, with a vertical grade-marking strip at one end of the grooves, and with consecutive numbers at the other end thereof, such numbers being opposite to the grooves.
4. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the removable dovetailed name-receiving slides, with the panel having its face provided with a series of horizontal parallel grooves for the reception of the slides, with a vertical grade-markin g strip at one end. of the grooves, and with a date-marking strip, the latter being arranged in proper relation to the inscription on the panel.
In'testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE HOGAN.
