(Cl. 229--15Dvl This invention relates to improvements in partitions for boxes or cartons and refers particularly to a partition construction which may partition a box or carton into a plurality of equal or unequal sized compartments.
One of the important features of the present invention resides in a partition construction which requires no folding of the partition members.
Another important feature of the invention resides in a partition construction whereby a box or carton is divided horizontally into a plurality of tiers and wherein vertical partition members for at least two of the tiers are interchangeable.
A further important feature of the invention resides in a partition construction which may be easily and conveniently set up in a box or carton and the partition members, prior to use, may be stored in at position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings and following detailed description.

Fig. 1 is a plan sectional view taken through a box or carton carrying the improved partition construction comprising the present invention.

Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates a box or carton which may be of foldable cardboard construction having a wraparound panel forming opposite side walls 2, opposite end walls 3 and top and bottom flaps 4 and 5, respectively, which form the top and bottom of the carton. The end edgesrof the wraparound panel may be disposed adjacent each other at a corner of the carton and may be joined by an adhesive strip 6.
The present invention is directed to a partition construction for a carton or box, such as described hereinbefore, However, the box or carton may be constructed in a fashion other than that described and may be constructed of any suitable material.
The partition construction comprising the present invention comprises ve unit partition members, a relatively flat main partition member 7 which may conform in shape to the section of the carton 1; two longitudinal partition members 8, and two transverse partition members 9.
The main partition member 7 is adapted to be positioned in the box or carton 1 with its plane substantially parallel to the top and bottom of the carton. As will be hereinafter more fully described, the member 7 is supported by a lower longitudinal member 8 and a lower transverse member 9. The member 7 is provided with a pair of spaced elongated slots 10 and a pair of substantially similar dimensioned spaced slots 11. The slots 10 are in axial alignment and are disposed transversely` with respect to the axially aligned slots 11. In the form of main partition member illustrated the projection of the axes of slots 10 intersect the projection of the axis of slots 11 at substantially the center of the member 7.
The two longitudinal partition members 8 are of a length substantially equal to the length of the member 7 and are of a height substantially equal to the distance between the plane of the main partition and the top or bottom of the carton. The lower edge of each member 8 is notched intermediate its length, as shown best at 12, in Fig. 4. On each side of the notch 12, the lower edge of the member 8 extends outwardly from the normal edge of the member to form two spaced tabs 13 and 14. As will be hereinafter more fully described, the tabs 13 and 14 are adapted to enter the slots 11 when the partition is assembled.
The two transverse partitions 9 are of a length substantially equal to the width of the main partition member 7, and of a height equal to the longitudinal partition members 8. Intermediate the length of the upper edge of each transverse partition member 9, a notch 15 is provided and at the opposite edge of each member a pair of spaced tabs 16 and 17 is carried.
It will be noted that the entire partition comprising the members 7, 8 and 9 is constructed of flat stock having no folds. This is of decided advantage in that the members may be conveniently stacked for shipping and storage in knocked-down form.
In setting up the partition in the box or carton 1, a longitudinal member 8 and a transverse member 9 are assembled by interiitting the notches 12 and 15. Thus, a cross construction is formed with the tabs 13, 14, 16 and 17 all extending in the same direction. The cross construction thus assembled is positioned in the box or cart-on with the tabs extending upwardly and the opposite edges of the members resting upon the bottom `of the carton. The main partition member may then be positioned over the cross construction with the tabs 16 and 17 registering with slots 10 and the tabs 13 and 14 registering with the slots 11.
The remaining two members 8 and 9 may then be assembled, as hereinbefore described, to form a second cross structure, and with the tabs of this cross structure extending downwardly said tabs may be positioned respectively in slots 10 and 11 in plane-parallel relationship to the tabs previously inserted in said slots. To accommodate two tab thicknesses in each slot 10 and 11, the width of said slots is made such as to permit two tabs to enter each slot and fit therein in a snug fashion.
'It will be noted that each partition member 8 .and 9 has :a tab, from its corresponding partition member on the opposite side of the member 7, lying in planee-parallel relationship thereto. Hence, each tab func-tions to reinfonce the partition member lying adjacent thereto and a rela-tively rigid partition construction results. Although a partition construction which forms eight equally sized .compartments ,118 is shown and described, it is not essential to the invention that said compartments be of equal size or that only eight compartments Ibe provided. For example, the transverse members 9 may intersect the longitudinal members at a line other than the center of the longitudinal members or the longitudinal members may intersect the transverse members `along a line other than the center of the transverse members, or the intersecting line may be spaced from the center of both members. Thus unequal sized compartments .are provided.
In addition, if desired, two or more longitudinal partition members may be used for each tier, the partition members having t-abs which are assembled together in appropriate slots lin the main partition, in the manner hereinbefore described. iFurther, two or more tiers may be employed. It more than two tiers are employed, additional main partition members will be used and the intermediate longitudinal and transverse par-tition members will carry tabs at both of their longitudinal edges Vto engage in slots provided in the main partition members above and below the intermediate partition members. Accordingly, it is not intended to limit the present invention to Vthe precise construction shown and described, since the essential features of the invent-ion be employed in many modications which will be apparent to those skilled in the art.

1. A partition construction for a carton which .comprises, .a main .partition member which conforms substantially in area and shape with the inner area and shape of a section of a carton, said main partition member being provided with a pair of sets of spaced, aligned, relatively elongated slots, a longitudinal and a transverse partition i member disposed transversely to, and above said main partition member, a longitudinal and `a transverse partition member disposed transversely to, and below said main partition member, said longitudinal and transverse members above and below said main partition member being respectively disposed transversely to each other, tabs carried by said longitudinal members engageable in one set of slots in the main partition member whereby the tabs of one longitudinal member lie in plane-parallel surfacecontacting relationship to the other longitudinal member, tabs carrie-d by said transverse members engageable in the other set of slots in the main partition member whereby the tabs of one transverse member lie in planeparallel surface-contacting relationship to the other tran-sverse member, said transverse and longitudinal parti-tion members being provided with notches whereby the transverse and longitudinal members above and below said main partition member are respectively engaged.
2. A partition construction for a -ca-rton which comprises, a main partition member which conforms substan- .f
tially in area and shape with the inner area and shape of a section of a carton, said main partition member being provided with a pair of sets of spaced, aligned, relatively elongated slots, a longitudinal and a transverse .partition member disposed transversely to, and above said main partition member, a longitudinal and -a transverse par-tition member disposed transversely to, and below said main partition member, said longitudinal Iand transverse members above and below said main partit-ion member being respectively disposed transversely to each other,
said transverse and longitudinal partition members being respectively similar to each other, tabs carried by 4said longitudinal members engageable in one set of slots in the main partition member whereby the tabs of one longitudinal member lie in plane-.parallel side-by-side contacting relationship to the other longitudinal member,
.tabs carried 4by said transverse members engageable in the other set of slots in the main partition member whereby the tabs of one transverse member ylie in plane- -parallel side-by-side contacting relationship to the other transverse member, said transverse and longitudinal partition members being provided with not-ches whereby the transverse and longitudinal Imembers above and below said main partition member are respectively engaged.
3. A partition construction for a carton which comprises, a main partition member which conforms substantially in area and shape with :the inner area and shape of a section of a carton, said main partition member being provided with a pair of sets of spaced, aligned, relatively elongated slots, ya pai-r of 'longitudinal .partition members disposed transversely to, and one above land one below said main partition member, a pair of ,transverse partition members disposed triansversely to, and one above and one below said main :partition member, said'longitudinal and transverse members above and below said main partition member being respectively engaged .transversely to .each other, two corresponding tabs carried by said longitudinal members engageablc in each slot of one set of slots in the main partition member, and tw-o corresponding tabs icar-ried by said transverse members en gageable in each slot of the other set of slots in the main partition member.

A partition construction for a carton which cornprises, a main partition member which conforms substantially in area and shape with the inner area and shape of a section of a carton, said main partition member being provided with a pair of sets of spaced, aligned, relatively elongated slots, a pair of longitudinal partition members disposed transversely to, and one above and one below said main partition member, a pair of transverse partition members disposed transversely to, and one above and one below said main partition member, said longil tudinal and transverse lmembers above and below said main partition member being respectively engaged transversely to each other, tabs carried by said longitudinal members engageable in `one set of slots in the main partition member whereby the tabs of one longitudinal member lie in planesparallel :contact-ing relationship to the other longitudinal member on opposite sides of the main partition member, and tabs `carried by said'transverse members engageable in the other set of slots in the main partition member whereby the tabs of one transverse member lie in plane-parallel contact-ing relationship toY the `other Vtransverse member on opposite .sides of the main partition member.
