STEREOTYPE-PLATE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,204, dated April 24, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND WESEL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented an Improved Stereotype- Plate Holder, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is a top view of my improved stereotype-block; Fig. 2,'a vertical section thereof on the line a c, Fig. l'yFig. 3, a vertical section on the line 070, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a side View, and Fig. 5 an end view, of one of the spacingplugs employed in the block. Fig. 6 is a perspective View, and Fig. 7 a top view, of one of the plateholding jaws.

In the drawings, the letter A represents my improved block. The same has series of grooves a a extending diagonally across its face, all parallel with one another. In cross-section the grooves may be of the form of inverted letters T, as shown in Fig. 2, or of dovetail or other analogous form.

B B are the jaws i'or clamping the stereotypeplates 0 G. The shank b of each jaw B is intended to enter and fit, and therefore has the form of, the groove 00, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 6. The plate-holding upper part, d, of the jaw. has a beveled orinclined holding-face,

which is to bear against the bevel edge of the plate (has shown in Fig. 3.

In each end of each groovea is hung a screwspindle, D, parallel with the groove. On this screw travels a nut, E.

F F are spacing-plugs to heinserted between the nuts E and jaws B. When aplate, O, has been placed in its proper location upon the block A, four or more jaws, B B, are brought to bear against its edges, and are then tightened by turning the screws D and crowding the nuts E and interposed plugs F against said jaws. Plugs of varying lengths must be on hand to permit of the properloclking ot' the plates. In each jaw the shank b must be diagonal to the biting-edge of the top part, 01, as shown.

I claim- 1. The block A, having diagonal grooves a a, in combination with the diagonal screws D and theirnuts E, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The block A, having diagonal grooves a, in combination with screws D, nuts E, and jaws B, substantially as herein shown and described.
