Application "December- '26, 1951, Serial'No.'263,199
3-Olaims. 1
The present invention relates generally new and useful improvements in fishermens tools, and has for its .primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a novel combination of a knife, fish sealer, gaff hook'and*welgh ing scale.
Another very important object of the invention islto provide a compound'tool of the'aforementioned character comprising novel means for locking'the weighing scale against operation in the handle when it is desired to use the knife blade.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a fishermans knife of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eificient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section through a knife constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the device, showing the tool in use as a weighing scale.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view, lookin at the device from the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an elevational view, looking at the handle end of the device.
Figure 6 is a detail view in end elevation of the blade shank.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a tubular handle 8 of suitable material. Secured by a pin 9 in one end portion of the handle 8 is a bushing ID, the outer end portion of which is internally threaded, as at l I.
The upper end portion of the handle 8 is counterbored, as at 12, and secured by a pin l3 therein is an internally threaded socket M. An opening l'5 in the socket I4, the purpose of which will be presently set forth, communicates with the socket bore.
Removably mounted on the handle 8' is a blade 16. The blade l6 includes a knife or smooth cutting edge [1, a toothed scaling edge l8, and terminates at "its 'free end in-a gaff hook l9.
"The'blade 16 is fixed on one end portionnf a "shaft or shank 20 which is mounted dongl tudinally the bore 2| of the tubular handle 8 in spaced relation to "the walls of said here. Immediately-adjacent the blade I 6, the shank :20 is provided with a threaded portion :22 which screws into the portion H of the bushing 1.8. The shank 28 "further includes -a threaded fre end portion 23 which screws'into' the sockeizFill. It will thus be seen that the shank 20 is removably mounted in the bushing I 8 and the socket I 4. Immediately adjacent the threaded end portion 23, the shank 20 has formed thereon a head 24 engageable in a seat 25 provided therefor in the socket 14. The head 24 and the thread 23 are notched, as at 26, to receive a locking pin 21 which is mounted on the free end portion of a spring 28. The spring 28, in turn, is secured at one end on the lower end of the handle 8, as at 29. The opening IS in the socket f4 accommodates the locking pin 21.
The coil spring 30 encircles the shank 20 in the bore 2| of the tubular handle 8. The ends of the coil spring 30 are engaged with the bushing 10 and the head 24. Communicating with the bore 2| is a longitudinal sight opening 3| in the handle 8 through which the shank 28 may be observed. Adjacent the longitudinal sides of the slot 3|, the handle 8 is graduated, as at 32.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the smooth knife edge I! is used for cutting, the toothed edge I8 of the blade 16 is used for scaling fish and the hook I9 is used as a gaff. For weighing a fish or other object, the device is held vertically with the handle 8 uppermost, as seen in Figure 2 of the drawing. The spring 28 is flexed to disengage the pin 21 from the notches 26 for permitting the shank 28 to be unscrewed from the socket I 4 and the bushin 10. When thus unscrewed, the shank 20 i free to slide downwardly in the handle 8 against the tension of the coil spring 30. The fish or other object to be Weighed is then suspended in any suitable manner, as at 33, from the hook l8 and the spring 30 is compressed under the load. The head 24 on the shank 20 may then be observed through the slot 3| and read against the graduations 32 for ascertaining the correct weight of the fish or other object.
It is believed that many advantages of a fishermans knife constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of th device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what claimed as new is:
1. A fishermans tool of the character described comprising an elongated handle having a longitudinal bore therethrough, a bushing and a socket in the bore, said handle further havin a. longitudinal slot therein communicating with the bore, a slidable shank in the handle threadedly mounted in the bushing and the socket for securing said shank against sliding movement, and a blade on one end of the shank.
2. A fishermans tool comprising an elongated handle having a longitudinal bore therethrough, a bushing in one end portion of the bore, a socket in the other end portion of said bore, a shank slidable in the bushing and engageable in the socket, coacting thread on the shank, and in the bushing and the socket for releasably securing said shank against slidin movement, av coil spring in the handle encircling the shank and operatively connected thereto for yieldingly resisting sliding movement thereof in one direction, a blade on one end of the shank, and means for securing the shank against rotation in the bushing and the Socket.
3. A flshermans tool comprising an elongated handle having a longitudinal bore therethrough, a bushing in one end portion of the bore, a socket in the other end portion of said bore, a shank slidable in the bushing and engageable in the socket, coacting threads on the shank and in the bushing and the socket for releasably securing said shank against slidin movement, a coil spring in the handle encircling the shank and operatively connected thereto for yieldingly resisting sliding movement thereof in one direction, a blade on one end of the shank, and means for securing the shank against rotation in the bushing and the socket, said socket having an opening therein, said means including a head on the shank having a notch therein, a spring mounted on the handle, and a pin on said spring operable in the opening and engageable in the notch for securing the shank against rotation.
