Description
Feb. 3, 1953 H. A. HOLT TIE AND GARMENT PRESS Filed Oct. 27, 1949 Patented Feb. 3, 1953 TIE AND GARMENT PRESS Horace Alexander Holt, Kent, England Application October 27, 1949, Serial No. 123,835
" In Great Britain June 20, 19 19 6 Claims. (01. 38-41) The present invention relates to presses for articles of Wear, and more particularly to presses for neckties, trousers and the-like.
Many known presses for articles of clothing such as trousers, neckties and the like are constructed with screwed parts or'other members whose manipulation requires an appreciable amount of time when inserting an article into or removing an article from the press. It is an object of the present invention to provide a press which is quick and simple of operation, whilst efficient in pressing the articles inserted therein, and in maintaining pressure thereupon.
According to the invention there is provided a press for articles of wear in which the articles to be pressed are engaged between two relatively moveable, equally tapered members which are induced to converge by reason of the engagement of the equally inclined edges of one with similarly inclined surfaces in fixed relation to the other, and are locked together by virtue of said engagement.
One embodiment of the invention as applied by way of example to a press for neckties will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a plan view showing the slide pressed home;
Figure 2 is an end view with the slide in the same position; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the slide partially withdrawn.
Referring to the drawings, the body of the press comprises walls I secured to a tapered base 2, and inclined from the vertical so that the angles between the inner surfaces of the walls I and the upper surface of the base 2 are equal, and are each less than ninety degrees.
A tapered slide 3, whose taper is similar to that of the base 2, and whose side edges are inclined from the vertical at angles equal to the angles of inclination of the walls I, is adapted to be slid into the body of the press as shown in Figure 3.
It will be apparent that when the slide 3 is thus inserted into the body of the press, and is pushed in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 3, the walls I, by virtue of their inclination, will tend to force the slide 3 towards the upper surface of the base 2.
In operation, with the slide removed from the body of the press, a necktie 6, or a number of neckties is or are laid upon the upper surface of the base 2 as shown in Figure 3. The slide is then inserted into the body of the press, and pushed in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 3. As the slide is pushed home, the inclinedwalls I act as described above to force the slide 3 towards the upper surface of the base 2, between which surface and the lower surface of the slide 3 the necktie or neckties is or are compressed. The reactionary force of the necktie or neckties tends to press the slide 3 away from the base 2 so that it becomes locked by the walls I, and remains in position compressing the necktie or neckties, until withdrawn by pressing the slide towards the base 2, and sliding it longitudinally in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow in Figure 3. Recesses or notches 4 may be provided in the slide 3 to assist in such withdrawal.
The slide 3 may also be provided with an aperture 5 to enable the press to be hung up, or its narrower end may be formed as a hook or may be adapted to receive a detachable hook I for the same purpose.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described, but may include other embodiments within its scope. For example the invention may be embodied in a trouser or other garment press, or may be provided with a separate locking member in addition to the slide.
The tie presses will be moulded in plastics and trousers presses in sheet plastic with extruded plastic side and reinforcing members. They can also be made of wood.
What I claim is:
l. A press for articles of wear comprising a pair of relatively movable tapered members adapted to grip and press an article of wear therebetween and having converging sides and substantially fiat article engaging surfaces, inwardly sloping walls along the sides of one of the members or base extending upwardly from the article engaging surface thereof and inclined at equal substantially right angles thereto, the sides of the other member or slide being inclined with respect to the article engaging surfaces of said other member at an angle equal to the angle of inclination of said walls and adapted to engage said walls at several alternate locations on their inner surfaces whereby relative longitudinal movement of said members urges the article engaging surfaces thereof into pressing engagement with an article positioned therebetween.
2. A press for articles of wear comprising a pair of relatively movable tapered members adapted to grip and press an article of wear therebetween and having converging sides and substantially flat article engaging surfaces, inwardly inclined walls along the sides of one member or base extending upwardly from the article engaging surface thereof and inclined at equal substantially right angles thereto, the sides of the other memher or slide being inclined with respect to the article engaging surface of said other member at an angle equal to the angle of inclination of said walls and adapted to engage said Walls at several alternate locations on their inner surfaces whereby relative longitudinal movement of said members urges the article engaging surfaces thereof into pressing engagement with an article positioned therebetween and means for attaching said members to a support.
3. A press for article of wear as claimed in claim 2 wherein said attachment means comprises an aperture formed in one end of said slide member.
4. A press for articles of wear as claimed in claim 2 wherein said attachment means comprises a hook member formed integral with said slide member.
5. A press for articles of wear as claimed in claim 2 wherein said attachment means comprises a hook detachably secured to said slide member.
6. A press for articles .of wear comprising a pair of relatively movable tapered members adapted to grip and press an article of wear positioned therebetween and having converging sides and substantially flat article engaging surfaces, and means effective upon relative longitudinal movement of said members to urge the said surfaces into pressing engagement with the said article, the said means comprising inwardly inclined walls along the sides of one member adapted to engage the side edges of the other member to eifect progressive approximation of the members one to the other in a direction normal to the said surfaces whereby the said pressing engagement is effective at varying distances of separation in the said direction of the two members.
