MICHAEL VERDI Patented Dec. 9, 1952 UNITED COMBINED SAFETY RAZOR AND HAIRCUTTER Michael Verdi, Jamaica, N. Y.
Application August 19, 1950, Serial No. 180,465
9 Claims. (Cl. Sil-30) This invention relates to tonsorial implements and, more particularly, to a combined safety razor and hair cutter.
One object of the invention is the provision of a combined safety razor and hair cutter whereby all of the grooming operations ordinarily performed by a barber in his shop may be performed by the individual Within the confines of his home.
Another object of the invention is to construct the device so that the hair cutting and the shaving portions thereof are extremely effective and yet absolutely safe.
Still another object of the invention is to construct the device so that the cutting means although normally locked in place are readily removed and replaced.
A further object of the invention is to construct the device so that the same is capable of being manufactured economically.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure.
Fig. l is a side elevational view of the device of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the device.
Fig, 3 is an isolated isometric view of the handle portion of the device.
Fig. 4 is an isolated perspective view of the shaving and hair cutting portion of the device.
Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective vieW of means for connecting the two portions of the device.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the hair cutting and shaving portion shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 'l is a face view of the cutting means.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 8--8 of Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is an enlarged sectional vieW on line 9--9 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 10 is a side elevational view similar to Fig. l, but illustrating the device constructed in accordance with a modification of the present invention.
Fig. ll is an enlarged partial longitudinal sectional view taken on the line I I-I I of Fig. 10.
The combined safety razor and hair cutter, according to the first form of the present invention shown in Figs. 1 to 9, includes a handle I0 of tapering width which may be provided with a comb having a plurality of tines or teeth I I and a backing member I2, see particularly Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
Preferably the handle is formed of a clear plastic material. The hair cutting and shaving portion of the device preferably is formed separate from the handle I so that the latter may conveniently be replaced if one or more of the teeth I l are broken. The said cutting and shaving por.. tion comprises a plastic bar I 3 having slightly convear side faces, see also Figs. 4 and 6. One edge of bar I3 is provided with ridges or serrations Ill and the other edge is provided with short teeth or tines I5. Before describing further the shaving and cutting portion of thedevice it is deemed desirable first to describe the manner in which the same is attached to handle I0.
The wider end edge of handle I0 is provided at one side thereof with a semicircular extrusion or extension I6 of substantially half the thickness of the edge. The said extension is formed into a circle by a semicircular notch Il in the opposite side of said edge, said notch having a 'depth equal to half the thickness of the edge. One end edge of bar I3A is provided with an eX- tension I8 and a notch 20 like in all respects to the extension IE and notch I'I except that they are oppositely disposed relative to the two sides of the device, see Figs. 3, 4, 6 and 8. The construction is such that the notches and extensions complement one another and extension I8 fits into notch I'I while extension I6 ts into notch 2li. To secure the parts together a hole 2| is provided at the center of each of the said circles and a sleeve 22 is passed through the two. Passing through the sleeve 22 is a tapered head bolt 23 which is threaded into a circular tapered nut 2 4, see also Fig. 5. The bolt 23 also passes through a pair of retainer washers 25 to be more fully described hereinafter, the holes in said washers being countersunk to receive said tapered nut and the tapered head of the bolt.
It is believed evident, therefore, that the construction just above described provides an effective, readily manipulated connection between bar I3 and comb IB.
As mentioned above, the side faces of bar I 3 are slightly convex, and each said face has projecting therefrom a pair of longitudinally spaced studs or lugs 25. The said lugs are adapted to engage in the usual Islots 2l arranged along the longitudinal center line of an ordinary double edge safety razor blade 28 such as that illustrated in Fig. 7. It will be seen, therefore, that a blade 223 is mounted on either face of said bar by means of the lugs 26.
The serrations I4 and the teeth I5 project past the edges of the blades 28 and serve to space said Vguard is required for each blade 28.
of bar I3, each plate having formed off from the end thereof a tail 34 which is-wound about the rod 32. Thus, the said plates are pivoted on said rod. Each guard plate 33 is in the form of a shallow trough whose end Walls t' over'the ends of the blades 28, and whose sideedges leave exposed only the very edges of said blades, see Figs. l and 4.
It is desired that the. guards 33 normally be -lockedin the guarding position of Fig. l, but be beriilY` the'gface of bar I3- is provided with a well 3T'. It willreadilyA be perceived that when'said partsareengaged in said well, thecguardl 33 is lool-:ede against lateral movements. To prevent pivotal ,movements of the guards the cross bar off eachy L-sh'apedvmember 36 extends along the surfacev of bar I3 beneath a bent-up tail 38 formed: on the-associateretainer'washer 25 hereinbeforel described; Thus, when the bolt 23 is drawn up vthe saidV tails secure thevguards 33 in guarding position. However, the bolt can be loosened'rto-allow the washers to be turned, thus disengaging the said tails 38 from the inverted I.'shapedfmembers and freeing the latter.
The-construction isI such that with' the guards 33" inilocked position the serrations I4 space the edges-of the blades i8Y an extremely short distance from-the-fface so that' a close shave may be obtained safety; and the teeth I space the ,edges ofrsaid'fblades ay greater' distance from the skin *for* effectively trimming the hair.
Inthe-'modication ofthev present invention shownink Figs. 10 and 11the tapered handle Ill and; the bar I3 are formed of one piece of lresinous. plastic material. Thejuncture of the han- V dlex'lll'v and-,thefbar I3.,is formed with a hole 2| for the-passage-of theibolt 23' to mount the-re- .tainer washers-25h1- position upon the sides of the device. IIn -view of` the one-piece construction of the handle I0 and the bar I3', the sleeve 22, used inithe ilrst form of the-invention, has been y eliminated;
In=v all other.Y respects, the form of the invention shown in Figs. 10 and 11 is similar to the nrst-gformand likesreference numerals identify ,like parts.
.in .the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United `States Letters Patentv is:
