A. CUTLER.
BRACKET. FOR INKS'TANDS.
No. 262,009. S Patented Aug. 1, 1882.
. j" a a Y WITNESSES: "INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABNER CUTLER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
BRACKET FOR INKSTANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,009, dated August 1, 1882.
Application filed May 11, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER CUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bufl'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Brackets for Inkstands; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a bracket adjustably pivoted to a case of pigeon-holes upon a desk or table, and having a ring or seat'atits outer end for the reception of an inkstand,
- andaprotecting pad or cover under which the inkstand is swung, and against which the opening in the inkstand is held when not in use to keep out dust and prevent the evaporation of the ink,all as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a case of pigeon-holes with two of my improved devices applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the pivoted bracket, and Fig. 3 shows the application of the protecting pad or cover to the inkstand in the pivoted bracket.
Referring to the drawings, a is the bracket, at one end of which is the cylindrical socket a, in which is loosely inserted the screwthreaded depending rod b, secured to the under side, 0, of the pigeon-hole case, near its outer edge.
A thumb-nut, d, is employed, as shown, which can be moved up and down upon the screw-threaded rod b in adjusting the bracket to its proper position.
The outer end of the bracket a is provided with a tapering ring or seat, 0, in which is placed the iukstand f.
g is a pad or cover, having on its under side a facing, g, of cloth, leather, or rubber. The pad g is secured to the spring-arm g by means of the screw 9 which screw rests loosely in the socket 9 thereby permitting the pad to yield slightly as the inkstand is pushed underit.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: When the ink is to be used the bracket ais swung out within easy reach of the writer, and as readilyswung back outof the way when not in use. By means of the adjustingthumbnot at the bracket or can be raised or lowered, so as tomaintain,in connection with the springarm 9 a close contact of the protecting pad or cover 9 with the mouth of the inkstand, thereby preventing the entrance of d ustas well as the evaporation of ink,
Other forms of inkstands than that shown in the drawings could be used, and the construction of the holding portion cand the protecting pad or covergcould be correspondingly modified, and the bracket and pad or cover could be arranged upon the top of the desk in other ways than that shown in the drawings without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- 1. A bracket carrying an inkstand at its outerend,ad justablypivoted toacaseofpigeonholes upon a desk or table, and at protecting cover or pad, likewise secured to the case of pigeon-holes, combined and operating substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the bracketA, having the cylindrical socket a and the ring or seat 6 for holding the inkstand, the depending screw-threaded rod 1), and the adjusting thumbnut 01 0f the protecting pad or cover g, loosely pivoted to the spring-arm 9 substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose stated.
