COLLAPSIBLE LINED TRAY OR CARTON Filed Feb. 14, 1949 IN V EN TOR.
Patented Nov. 11, 1952 UNITED STATESY PATENT FFICE COLLAPSIBLE LINED TRAY OR CARTON Mich.
This invention relates to improvements in colchinery and which when set up is strong and rigid,
the liner providing a complete unbroken liner for the interior of the tray or carton.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention'is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a tray or carton embodying my invention completely erected.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view illustrating one of the steps in erecting the tray or carton.
Fig. 3 is a similar perspective view illustratin another step in the erecting of the carton.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary View in section on a line corresponding to line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. l.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan View of one corner of the blank with the liner omitted.
Fig. 7 is a plan View of the blank extended with the liner thereon, one corner of the liner being turned up to disclose therelation of certain parts.
The embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing comprises a bottom I, side Walls 2--2 hingedly connected to the bottom along the lines 3-3 and walls 4-4 hingedly connected to the bottom along the lines 5-5. Corner flaps 6 are hingedly connected to the end walls along the lines l. These lines are ordinarily score lines.
The side walls have diagonally disposed slits 8 therein opening at their end edges thereby providing delectable portions 9 above the slits. The corner flaps have slits I0 therein providingV tongues Ii engageable through the slits of the side walls. When erected, the lower portions of the corner flaps are inserted through the slits 8 and are positioned on the inner sides of the side walls below the slits thereof. The tongues I I engage the upper edges of the slits or the deflectable portions 9 of the side walls with upper portions of the corner flaps on the outer sides of the deflectable portions 9 of the side walls and in supporting engagement therewith.
These parts and their relationship is substantially that of my Patent ber 221949.#

Application February 14, 1949, Serial No. 76,299
5 Claims. (Cl. 229-35) The .liner sheet I2 is of suitable flexible ma- -terial desirably of cellophane, Pliofilm or other moisture or grease resisting material. `This liner sheet is of a dimension substantially corresponding to the length and width of the blank when at, the corners are preferably cut off as indicated at I3. 'I'he liner is adhesively secured to the side and end walls by spots of adhesive indicated at I4 located near the outer edges of these walls. The liner is also adhesively secured to the corner flaps by spots of adhesive indicated at I5.
It will be noted that the liner is not adhered to the tongueportions or the portions below the tongues or the inner ends of the corner flaps or` to the portions of the side walls above the slits 8 therein. With the liner thus attached to the wall blank the blank may be quickly and easily set up, the liner not interfering with this operation or the insertion of the lower ends ofthe corner flaps through the slits 8 or the engagement of the tongue with the slits.
As the .end walls are verected from the position f shown in Fig. 2 the deflectable portions of tliff side walls are pressed inwardly somewhat to re-j'.
ceive the corner flaps. As the end walls and cor,- ner flaps are swung to erected position the liner is drawn or wrapped around the end edges of the side walls and portions thereof disposed between the portions of the corner flaps on the outer sides embodied in a square tray or carton or other shapes. It is a matter of convenience in erecting when the tray or box is elongated to have the slits on the side Walls and the corner `flaps on the :j end walls, that is, considering longer and shorter dimensions.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I havenot attempted to illustrate or describe other ernbodiments orvadaptations which I contemplate as'V it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, whatf''fv claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l 1
