Description

A g- 1952 E. H. ASHBAUGH TETHERING DEVICE Filed June 13. 1950 I IN VENTU/L k w m A m H W R w Patented Aug. 19 1952 v TETHERING DEVICE Earl H. Ashbaugh,-Petaluma, Calif.
1 Application June 13, 1950, Serial No; 167,743 V The present invention relates to improvements in a tethering device wherein an inclined flexible pole, having a leash freely suspended from the upper end thereof, is provided adjacent the other end thereof with an integrally formed. single spring coil mounted upon a drum on the outer end of a horizontal arm having its inner end rotatably mounted upon a vertical rod, slidably mounted through a. round anchor plate, having a screw upon the lower end thereof and below said plate, said pole being inclined from the outer end of said arm back beyond and alongside of the upper end of said rod, whereby said rod may be shortened at its lower end to engage a hard ground without interference with or from said pole when flexed or lowered, or lengthened considerably to effectively engage soft or loose ground, whereby said tethering device efiiciently may be anchored to resist removal due to undue lateral or twisting pressure from an animal secured to said leash and walking around said pole.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved tethering device having improved means adapted to more effectively engage and be anchored to various types of soil from a hard, substantially unyielding ground, to a soft, sandy, or loose ground requiring considerable depth of penetration for securing purposes.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type described provided with a screw adapted to penetrate deeply into loose or sandy soil, or to be retracted sufi'iciently to firmly engage and penetrate a shallow, hard surface, whereby said tethering device easily may be adjusted to efliciently engage various foundations.
A further object of the present improvement is to provide a new and improved device of the character set forth having improved means adapted to permit a flexible pole to swing freely around an upwardly projecting anchoring rod whereby an unscrewing rotation of an anchor plate may be prevented.
The improvement comprises the details of construction and the arrangement of the several parts as disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which Figure 1 is a broken elevation of the device, with the central securing rod and screw lowered as for deep penetration; and
Figure 2 is a broken plan view.
Referring to the drawings:
The numeral l is used to designate a preferably round, horizontally disposed anchor plate through the center of which is slidably mounted 4 Claims. (C!.119 117) Y a vertical rod 2 having a suitable. screw or worm 3 upon its lower pointed end; The rod 2 .also slidably passes through a suitable clamp 4 secured to the plate I by means of which slidable movement relatively to said plate I may be prevented, and said rod rigidly adjusted to penetrate deeply or slightly into a loose or hard ground.
Rotatably mounted upon the rod 2 and above the clamp 4 thereon in-the inner end of an arm 6, which may be provided with a suitable antifriction bearing 1, if required, and having an apertured lip 8 on the outer end thereof and a drum 9 having an outer removable face plate I I held in place by a suitable wing nut or the like I 8.
A preferably tapered and inclined flexible pole H is provided with a single spring coil formed integral adjacent the lower end thereof, as indicated at M, adapted to be seated upon the'drum 9, while the extreme lower end of the pole "is inserted through an apertured lip 8 on the outer end of the arm 6, said arm 6 and lip 8 being adapted to hold said pole substantially upright or in a normally inclined position, with the inclined portion thereof extended back beyond and alongside of the rod 2, as disclosed in Figure 2 of the drawings, to prevent interference with a free vertical movement of said pole, when flexed downward, when the rod 2 considerably is extended upwardly to permit shallow penetration only of the screw 3 into a hard soil, as disclosed in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings. A flexible leash l6, such as a rope or the like, freely is suspended from a ring or suitable eyelet on the upper or free end of the pole, by means of which an animal, not shown, may be tethered.
The novel arrangement above described produces the new and useful result of insuring free rotation of the arm '6 and pole l2 around the device whereby removal of the same, through binding of the arm 6 upon the rod 2, is prevented, and, also, a full range flexing or lowering of the pole I2, by undue strain of an animal, is permitted without contacting of said pole I2 with the rod 2.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A tethering device comprisin a horizontal plate; a vertical rod slidably mounted through said plate; a screw on the lower end of said rod; clamping means adapted to prevent relative movement of said rod; a horizontal arm rotatably mounted upon said rod above said plate; and a flexible pole mounted upon the free end of said arm and extended back over and beyond said rod.
2. A tethering device comprising a horizontal anchor plate; a vertical rod slidably mounted a 3- through the center of said plate; a screw on the lower end of said rod; a clamp on said plate adapted to engage said rod and prevent relative movement thereof; a lateral arm having one end rotatably mounted upon said rod; and a flexible pole mounted upon the other end of said arm and extended back over and aside the said rod.
3. A tethering device comprising a horizontally disposed round anchor plate; a vertical rod slidably mounted thmuglt the center of saidiiplate; a clamp mounted upon said"plate'and*adapted to engage said rod and prevent movement thereof relatively to said plate; a horizontal arm having its inner end rotatably mounted :uppnzsaid rod and above said plate and clamp thereon; aud an inclined flexible pole mountedon the outer end of said arm and extended upwardly:andabackwardly over and alongside said rod. 4
4. A tethering device comprising a horizontally disposed round anchor-plate; a vertical rod slid- 'ably mounted:- throughvthe center of :saidivplate; a elamfx-secured td1=the top cit-said plate: andiadapted to engageand's ecure said :rddlagainst reiative movement; a horizontal arm having an inner arm rotatably mounted on said rod above said clamp; a drum mounted adjacent the outer end of said arm; an apertured lip on the outer end of said arm; and an inclined flexible pole having a single integral coil adjacent the lower end thereof seated around said drum and having the lower end of said pole inserted through said apertured lip, and having the upper end of said flexible pole indlined-backJover andfa'longsidecsaid rod and adaptedto suspend a flexible leash from said pole.
