The present invention relates to improvements in a removable lamp shade having slide fastener securing means and has for an object the provision of a device of this kind in which the cover for the lamp shade frame is capable of being quickly and easily removed and replaced.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved lamp shade in which the spider or brace portion of the lamp shade frame is adapted to be removed so that the cover can be slipped on and off over the rings of the frame.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved structure which permits of performing with a sewing machine of all the'necessary sewing on the cover before attaching to the frame.

A still further object. of the present invention isto provide a device of this character which permits the cover to be applied to and removed from the frame repeatedly without mutilating thejcover or the frame.

A detachable cover of this type is very desirable, especially where the cover is-made of-expensive textile material since it will permit the cover to be removed from the frame and cleaned or washed and then replaced on thefr'ame.

A supply of these improved covers of 7 various designs and color schemes can be kept in the house or store in flat condition so that-the covers on the lamp shades can-be changed as frequently as desired to impart to a room any desiredmoti'f in color or design.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more fully described and more particularly pointedout in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to'the drawings, A generally designates a lamp shade frame which comprises a lower or base ring l0, an upper ring 2 Claims. (01. ames? ll, verticallconnectin'g bars I2 having their opposite end portions secured to the rings [0 and H by welding or the like and a hanger or spider generally indicatedat B. The hanger comprises a ring or hub I3 from which radiate arms H the inner ends of which are secured as by welding or the like to the hub I3. The outer free end portion of each arm I4 is bent upwardly and inwardly to form a hook 15 as is shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawing. Any'number of arms l4 could be provided but in the present illustration three. such arms are shown which are disposed at substantially degrees zapart. Three brackets, generally indicated at C, are provided for supporting-the hanger B The, brackets C are mounted on the upperring H at points which are spaced apartsubstantla1ly'l20 degrees and each bracket is of'substantially angle iron formation in cross section; and comprises a. vertical flange l6 and a horizontal flange I1. The vertical flange I6 is secured to the inner face of the upper ring II in any suitable manner such as by weldingorthe -like, and thehorizontal flange has an opening is therethrough for receiving the hook l5 of an associatedarm H.

A cover for the frame A; is generally indicated at D and comprises anouter layer or facing l9 and an inner layer or lining 20' which are joined together in-anyapproprlatemanner as by a row of stitching 2l. The cover D-is adapted to be folded upon itself along 'afold line 22 in the outer layer l9. -I'hree spaced apart slits or eyelets 23 are formed in theouter'layer l9 between the row of stitching 2| and the fold line 22 for permitting the horizontal flanges 'l I of the brackets C to extend through theouter layer 19 when the, cover is mounted on the frame A. A row of stitching 24 joins the free side'edge portions 19a of the outer layer 19: andthe free side edge portionsc'zfla of the lining-20, respectively.

One tooth-element 25 of a conventional zipper typeifastener generally indicated at E sis-attached to the free end portion of the outer layer l9 and theother tooth element '26 of the-fastener is attached to the free endportion of the lining 20. The slider 21 of thezipper fastener is carried by the element 25. Braid trimming, or the like, 28 may be attached in any-suitablemanner to the free end portion'ofthe outer layer I 9 to conceal the zipper fastener E A similar braid trimming 29 may be-a'ttached to the outer face of the outer layer -l-9 j ust below-thefold line 22.

In the use of the device, if it is desired to-mount the cover D on the frame A, the fastener E will' be moved to open position to afford access to the space 30 between the outer layer I9 and the lining 2| and the hanger B will be removed from the frame A by exerting a downward force on the arms I4 to remove the hooks I5 from the openings It in the brackets C. The cover D will be slipped downwardly over the upper ring I I of the frame in much the same manner as a pillow case is slipped over a pillow. The downward movement of thecover will be arrested by the engagement of the portions of the outer layer I9 adjacent the fold line 22 with the upper ring II at which time the zipper elements 25 and 26 will meet at the base ring Ill so that the zipper elements can be interlocked by the slider 21 to maintain the outer layer l9 and the liner 20 in properly stretched position on the frame A. As shown in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawings, the outer cover I8 will extend downwardly a short distance on the inner side of the frame to present a pleasing appearance to the eyeof the observer. The rings I and I I and thevertical bars I2 willbe disposed in the space 30 so that they are completely concealed by the cover.

The horizontal flanges. 1 I of the brackets C will be received by andextend through the slits of the cover D so that the covermay be applied to and removed from the; frame A easily and without mutilatingthe' cover'or .frame. 1 This arrangement willalsohelp to anchor the cover in its proper position onthe frame. The hanger B will then be mountedonthe frame A.by inserting the hooks I of the arms I4 upwardly into the openings I8 in the .horizontal flanges I! of the brackets C from beneath the flanges IT. The distance of the upper portion of each hook I5 from the point of attachment of its arm I4 to the hub I3 is slightly less thanthe distance between this point of attachment and the adjacent wall of the associated opening: I 8 of the horizontal flange as each hook I5 is..i nclined upwardly and inwardly towards-the hub l3. Such an arrangement 'will cause thehooks I5 to snap into their respective openings ll'and'to frictionally engage said adjacent'wall of "the opening It to securely and yet removably-j'hold'the hanger B in its mounted position onthe frame. r

In order"to"remove thecover D the steps are reversed, that is} thefihanger will be first removed; *thefzipperth'eri opened and the cover slipped-upwardly off the frame A. It will be noted that the cover 1) is a self-contained unit capable ofmaintaining itself upon the frame in the proper tightly drawn down position without any extraneous assistance as thefastening means is mounted entirely upon the cover and not having any part thereof on -the frame.

The material-for the cover may be cut in length to allow for pleated effect-and does not entail any detailed pattern as any=looseness in the material can be gathered in at top when sewing to lining and at bottom when attaching zipper. This cover can be completely made by machine sewing, including braid trimming, before putting on frame, thus. cutting .cost of labor. The elimination of tape binding which is usedv onhand sewn shades cuts thecost of material and labor.

. The outerlayer I9 may be of any desired color schemeand ,designand the lining may be of a similar or a contrasting color to augment the beauty ofthe lamp shade. 4

It is obvious that various changes and modifications maybe madein'the details of construction and design of the above specifically described em- 4 bodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

What I claim is:

1. An improved lamp shade comprising a frame having a base ring, an upper ring, and a plurality of angularly spaced apart connecting bars having their opposite end portions attached to said rings, a cover capable of being removed and reused without being mutilated or defaced comprising an inner layer and an outer layer having overlapping edge portions joined by stitches, the free vertical edge portions of each layer being secured together by stitches. said layers providing a space therebetween which receives said rings and said connecting bars, and zipper means for detachably connecting the other adjacent edges of the layers together after the layers have been disposed about said rings and bars and comprising a row of teeth carried by said otheradjacent edge of one layer, a second row of cooperating teeth carried by said other adjacent edge of the other layer and a slider for detachably interlocking said teeth. 1 r

An improved lamp shade comprising a frame having a base ring, an upper ring, and a plurality of angularly spaced apart connecting bars having their opposite end portions attached to said rings, a plurality of angularly spaced apart brackets each comprising a vertical flange secured to said upper ring and a horizontal flange having an opening therein, a hanger comprising a hub and a plurality of :arms radiating therefrom, a hook carried by the free end portion of each arm and adapted to be frictionally received by the opening in one of said brackets, a cover capable of being removed and reused without being mutilated or defaced comprising an inner layer and an outer layer having overlapp n edge portions joined by stitches, the-free vertical edge portions of each layercbeing secured together by stitches, said layersproviding a space therebetween which receives'said rings and said connecting bars, and zipper. means 'for detachably connecting the other adjacent edges of the layers together after the layers have been disposed about said rings and bars and comprising a row of teeth carried by said other adjacent edge of one layer, a second row of cooperating teeth carried by said other adjacent edge of the-other layer and a slider for detachably interlockingsaid teeth, said inner layer having adjacent said upper ring a plurality of angularly spaced apart slits through which extend the horizontal flanges of said brackets so that the openings in the horizontal flanges are exposed; for the reception f said hooks without. mutllating the cover.
