July 29, 1952 E. NUDELMAN Toy FIGURE EYE CONSTRUCTION*` Filed oem-8, 1948` Paientecl july 29, 1952 NT OFFICE TGY FIGURE EYE CONSTRUCTION Eoina N udelman, Chicago, Ill.
Application Gctober 8, 1948, Serial No. 53,416
(Cl. lMin-115) 3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a means for producing a realistic and novel eye and mouth effect in toy characters.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide toy characters, including statuettes, figurines, dolls or the like, with eye and mouth openings and stationary means positioned therein which will present lifelike eye and mouth appearances in said characters.
Another object is to provide a very simple and inexpensive manner of providing lifelike eye eilects in toy characters.
Another object is to provide a very simple and inexpensive manner of providing lifelike mouth and tongue effects in toy characters.
Other objects will become apparent as this description progresses.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view showing a toy character utilizing my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation View.
The character, generally indicated at li), is formed or molded of plastic or like material to form in relief any desired representative character. In the instance shown, the front l2 is formed of opaque material and is shaped to simulate a cat, although it will be understood that any other type or style of character, statuette, figurine, doll or the like may be formed without departing from the scope of this invention. The
opaque front I2 is shaped to continue rearwardly so as to form the sides I4 and top I6 of the toy figure. A rear wall or back i8, preferably formed of Lucite material which is translucent or transparent and preferably of a color different than the opaque front l2 is permanently secured as by glue or other fastening means to the opaque front along the sides and top thereof. A cavity or intervening space 2t is provided between the opaque front and the translucent or transparent rear wall or back.
In the opaque front, I provide a pair of hollow eye openings 22. Permanently secured to the rear wall I8 and extending horizontally therefrom and at right angles thereto are a pair of parallel spaced post members 24 which are cir' cular in transverse cross section. Each of said posts extends into the eye openings 22. The posts should be made of either translucent or transparent material and of a contrasting color to that of the opaque front I2. They may however be of the same material and color as the rear Wall.
The opaque front has a mouth opening 26 which communicates with the cavity 20. Permanently secured to the rear wall and extending horizontally therefrom and at right angles thereto is a post 28 which extends into the mouth opening and simulates a tongue. The post may have any cross sectional shape desired, dependant on the expression preferred. As shown, it is a distorted semi-circle in cross section. The post 28 is of transparent or translucent material.
When viewing the toy character, figurine or doll from the front or at an angle along the sides, the horizontal posts 24 which partially fill the eye cavities 22 give the realistic appearance of pupils of the eye, and particularly is this effect accentuated when light passes through the transparent or translucent rear Wall and along the transparent or translucent horizontal posts 2i. This gives an expression and character to the eyes unobtainable either by unfilled cavities or by other artificial eye members, and also provides a very inexpensive manner of carrying out such eye effect. Even when the posts 24 are made of the same material as the rear wall, the exposed ends 25 of the posts in the eye cavities Will appear darker and will have a depth, simulating the eye pupils and providing a realistic effect.
The characteristics described with respect to the posts 24 are similarly true with respect to the post 28, wherein a realistic tongue effect is produced by the post 28.
It will be understood that various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. An article of manufacture comprising. a body formed of an opaque front section having at least one opening therein, a rear section formed of light transmitting material and attached to said front section, and an elongated member mounted on said rear section and extending forwardly into said opening, said rear section having an area materially greater than the cross-sectional area of said elongated member said member being formed of light transmitting material and arranged to conduct light from the rear panel to the forward end of Said elongated member.
2. A toy character comprising a body having eye openings therein, a panel formed of light transmitting material and disposed rearwardly of said body, and a pair of elongated light trans- 3 mitting members communicating at their rearward ends with said panel and having their forward ends extending into said openings so that light may be conducted from said panel to said forward ends, said panel having an area materially greater than the cross-sectional areas of said elongated members.
3. An article of manufacture as dened in `claim 2, wherein the eye openings are of larger area than the cross-sectional areas of the forward ends of said members so as to dispose said forward ends in spaced relation to the marginal edges of said eye openings. I Y Y EOINA NU'DELMAN.
