PIVOTED JAW PIECE FOR PLIERS Filed Jan. 36, 1948 INVENTOR EDVIN GUSTAV FERDINAND SANDSTROM ATTORNEY Edvin Gustav Ferdinand Sandstriim, Motala, Sweden Application January 30, 1948, Serial No. 5,343
In Sweden January 31, 19 47 a v Claims. 1
My invention relates to tongs, one shank of which is provided with a rigid jaw and the other shank of which has a jaw swingably mounted on a transversely extending pin, said latter jaw may be locked in certain positions. The object of this construction of the tongs is that the swingable jaw shall be capable of adapting itself to the shape of the work piece, so that a firm grip is constantly ensured. Through the locking arrangement the tong may be converted, if desired, to such as are provided with two fixed jaws. It is the main object of the invention to improve the locking of the swingable jaw, so that it becomes simpler and more stable than in the constructions hitherto known. A further object of the invention is to provide a tong of this type in which the swingable jaw may be adjusted in the various positions in a very simple and rapid manner.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will .be apparent from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and of which:
Figs. 1-3 are elevations of a portion of a pair of tongs in three different positions taken by the swingable jaw.
Fig. 4 is a view partly sectioned on the line IV-IV of Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 shows a sectional view taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1.
The tong shown in the drawing have a shank carrying a fixed jaw 12, and a shank H which is pivoted to the shank Ill by means of a pin l6 and to a lever I8 by means of a pin 26. The movable jaw 22, which is U-shaped in section and thrust over the shank I4, is mounted on the latter about a transversely extending pin 24. Another pin 26 is arranged in. spaced relation below the bearing pin 24, said pin 26 being displaceable in parallel to its axis in recesses 28, 30, in the jaw 22 and the shank M, respectively. The recesses 28 in the jaw are of an oblong shape, and their longitudinal axis preferably extends through the centre of the bearing pin 24. On the other hand, the recess 36 in the shank I 4 is of a three-pointed configuration with extensions extending laterally from a portion coextensive with recesses 28, curved on an are about pin 24, and fitted to the shape of the pin 26. The pin 26 is operated by means of washers 32 located on the outside of the jaw 22, resilient washers 34 being inserted between said washers 32 and the jaw 22. The washers 32 facilitate the moving of the pin 26 at right angles to the axis thereof, while the 2 resilient washers 34 ensure at the same time sufiicient friction to retain the 'pin in the desired position.
By displacing the pin 26 into its lowermost position according to Fig. 1, the jaw 22 will be locked with its gripping surface paralleling the gripping surface of the jaw l2. Now, if the pin 26 is displaced in a direction toward the bearing pin 24, the jaw may be caused to take either one of the oblique positions relative to the fixed law, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Thus if the pin 26 is in the upper position in the recesses 28 and 30, it is freely adjustable to the shape of the work piece. To provide for suificient freedom of movement of the jaw 22 relative to the shank l4, the surface 36 of the latter facing the upper side of the jaw may be bevelled off both ways, as shown in the drawing.
While one specific embodiment of the invention has been shown, it is to be understood that this is for purpose of illustration only, and the invention is not to be limited thereby, but its scope is to be determined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. Tongs comprising two shanks, one of said shanks having a rigidly mounted jaw and the other of said shanks having a swingable jaw mounted on a transverse bearing pin, slots formed in said other shank and said swingable jaw, a bearing pin extending through said slots, one of said slots being elongated and arranged to provide for movement of said pin toward and away from said bearing pin, and the other slot having a portion coextensive with said one slot and another portion extending transversely thereto, whereby said swingable jaw may be locked in one position or free to move angularly.
2. Tongs according to claim 1, in which said one slot extends radially from said bearing pin, and said transverse portion is curved on an are about said bearing pin.
3. Tongs according to claim 2, in which'said one slot extends radially from said bearing pin, and said transverse portion is curved on an arc about said bearing pin.
4. Tongs comprising two shanks, one of said shanks having a rigidly mounted jaw and the other of said shanks having a swingable jaw of said pin toward and away from said bearing pin, and the other slot having a portion coexpin extending through said slots, one of said slots being elongated and arranged to provide for movement of said pin toward and away from said bearing pin, and the other slot having a portion coextensive with said one slot and another portion extending transversely thereto, whereby said 4 swingable jaw may be locked in one position parallel to the rigidly mounted jaw, or free to move angularly.
