A further object. is to provideapparatus of this type which automatically lowers the watch to its initial position within the case when thecover is closed and without possibility of damage to the watch by receiving a blow from the cover as it is swung toward closed position.

A further object is to provide adisplay mechanism of.;this typewhich incorporates a swivel joint so that when the cover is openedthe display may be turned for. at least a portion of a revolution without being disengaged, from .its supporting structure.

Referring to the drawings, the display box generally designated 10 includes a base 11 and a cover 12 which are pivotally connected by suitable hinge means 9. As shown in the drawing, this hinge means may take the form of cooperating rounded surfaces 13 and 14 on the base 11 and cover 12, and metallic clips 15 may be employed for maintaining the parts in assembled relationship. This form of hinge mounting is known in the art as a Rathbun hinge.

The base 11 and cover 12 cooperate to define an enclosure 16, and a display carrier generally designated 17 is positioned within this enclosure. The display car- 2,698,084 Patented Dec. 28, 1,954

The rounded portion 14 "of the cover prevents displacement of the trunnions 26 from the.sockets 28.

Means may be provided for limiting theupward movement of the display carrier 17,.and as shown in the drawings this means includes a.U-shaped.retainer. 31 having parallel legs132 connected .by a cross-bar 33. The cross-bar 33 is positioned sothat it engages the lift bracket 19 to limit the extent: of its pivotalmovement around the trunnions .26. The retainer 31 maybe formed of a single continuous length of wirehavingits ends 34 imbedded withinithe material .ofthe base 11,. or if desired this retainer 31 may be formed integrally. and constitute apart of the material of the base 11.

The display carrier may be shaped, to conform to the particular form of jewelry to be displayed, and in the device shown in the drawings the member 18 is formed in the shape of a C to provide asupportingmount for a wrist watch and wristband. The preferred manner of mounting the wristwatch andwrist bandon the display carrier 17 isclearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. The watch mount 18 is preferably provided with pairs'oftabs 35 which serveto confine the watch band between them and to hold it against displacement on the watch mount.

In operation the cover 12 is raised to elevate the display carrier 17 to the position shown in Figure 4. The watch and wrist band to be displayed are then mounted on the member 18 in the manner shown in Figure 2. If the watch is to be left on display the cover remains open and the member 18 may be swiveled to any desired angular position with respect to the lift bracket 19. The proportions of the member 18 are such that it may be turned through one-quarter revolution with the wrist watch mounted thereon so that the watch face assumes a vertical position for display purposes. If the wrist watch is to be stored in the box the cover 12 is closed after the member 18 has been returned to the position shown in Figure 4. Lowering of the cover 12 causes the tongue 29 to move in the slot 27 so that the display carrier 17 and wrist watch descend by gravity into the enclosure 16 formed between the base 11 and cover 12. A clearance recess 36 may be provided in the base 11 for reception of the tongue 29 when the cover 12 is in closed position. Whenever the cover 12 is swung to open position the tongue 29 engages the abutment 30 to raise the display carrier 17 to the display position.

Having fully described our invention, it is to be understood that we do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth. but our invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.

We claim:

1. In a display box for iewelry or the like, the combination of: a base, a cover hinged to the base and cooperating therewith to define an enclosure. said base and cover having at their hinged sides confronting portions, one of said confronting portions defining aligned bearing channels covered by the other confronting portion to form bearing sockets, a display carrier within the enclosure, means pivotally mounting the display carrier with respect to the base, said means including laterally extending trunnions on the display carrier adapted to rotate in said bearing sockets, the display carrier having a slot extending between said trunnions and terminating in an abutment, and a tongue on the cover projecting into the slot and engaging the abutment to raise the display carrier when the cover is swung to open position.

In a display box for jewelry or the like, the combination of: a base, a cover hinged to the base and cooperating therewith to define an enclosure, said base and cover having at their hinged sides confronting portions, one of said confronting portions defining aligned bearing channels covered by the other confronting portion to form bearing sockets, a display carrier within the enclosure, means pivotally mounting the display carrier with respect to both the base and cover, said means including laterally extending trunnions on the display carrier adapted to rotate in said bearing sockets, the display carrier having a slot extending between said trunnions and terminating in an abutment, a tongue on the cover projecting into the slot and engaging the abutment to raise the display carrier when the cover is swung to open position, and a U-shaped retainer fixed on the base and having a portion overlying the display member to limit upward movement thereof.

A display box, comprising: a complementary base member and cover member forming a container and having confronting rims, the rims at one side of said container forming mating rib and channel hinge elements arranged to permit articulate movement of said cover member; spring clips yieldably maintaining said hinge elements in cooperative relation; the hinge elements of said members being interrupted to form a tongue projecting from said cover member into said container and a clearance notch in the base member; said hinge element of one of said members on either side of said tongue having aligned grooves closed by the other hinge element to form bearing sockets; and an article elevating bracket including a bifurcated end having trunnions journaled in said bearing sockets and a central portion overlying said tongue, said tongue adapted to tilt said bracket upon opening of said container.

A display box, comprising: a pair of complementary box members one forming a cover for the other, said members having a side including mating rib and channel hinge elements; said hinge elements defining spaced coaxial bearing grooves and the cover having a tongue between said grooves projecting into the container formed by said box elements; and an article supporting bracket having a bifurcated end including trunnions fitting said bearing grooves and an intermediate portion overlying said tongue and arranged to tilt as said box is opened.

A display box, comprising: a complementary base member and cover member forming a container and having confronting rims, the rims at one side of said container forming mating rib and channel hinge elements arranged to permit articulate movement of said cover member; spring clips yieldably maintaining said hinge elements in cooperative relation; the hinge elements of said members being interrupted to form a tongue projecting from said cover member into said container and a clearance notch in the base member; said hinge element of one of said members on either side of said tongue having aligned grooves closed by the other hinge element to form bearing sockets; an article elevating bracket including a bifurcated end having trunnions journaled in said bearing sockets and a central portion overlying said tongue, said tongue adapted to tilt said bracket upon opening of said container; and a U-shaped stop anchored by its extremities in said base member and extending over said bracket to limit tilting movement thereof.

6. A display box, comprising: a pair of complementary box members one forming a cover for the other, said box members having a side including mating rib and channel hinge elements; said hinge elements defining spaced coaxial bearing grooves and the cover having a tongue between said grooves projecting into the container formed by said box elements; an article supporting bracket having a bifurcated end including trunnions fitting said bearing grooves and an intermediate portion overlying said tongue and arranged to tilt as said box is opened; and a stop member anchored in one of said box elements and overhanging said bracket to limit tilting movement thereof.
