Application August 30, 1950, Serial No. 182,257 12 Claims. (Cl. 29-66) This invention relates to a novel hand tool for shearing'safety razor blades in two along a predetermined diagonal axis.
In the fur trades, hand tools such as the one disclosed 1n my copending applications Serial Number 106,049 filed on July 21, 1949, now abandoned, land Serial Number 161,235 filed on` May 10, 1950, now abandoned, and are utilized in the well known operation of Letting Out" pelts, which consists,primarily, of parallelly slicing the backs of the pelts. `The cutting element` utilized in such tools is one half of a double edge safety' razor blade cut diagonally. The purpose of the resultant triangular form of the said cutting element is to allow of the tool which supports the element coming tol a point which facilitates closel observance of thework at hand.
One object of the invention,` therefore,is the provision of a simple and efficient hand tool for shearing safety razor blades in two along predetermined diagonal axis.
. Another object 'of' the invention is to construct said tool in such manner that squeezing pressures of the users fingers are sufiicientto shear the bladein two. Still another object of the invention is the provision of simple and effec-tive means for mounting and locking the blade in the tool.
A further object of the invention is to provide the said tool with rotatably marking means and to construct the tool in such manner that the handle portion thereof is adapted to either use of the tool.
'For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be 'had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in whichthe various novel. features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

According'to the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. l-S the tool includes a pair of plate members 15 and 16 each including a main body portion =17 and an elongated tapering tail 18 extending from'the body portion atan angle to` the longitudinal axis'of the latter. The plates 15 and 16 are arranged side by side and arc loosely pivoted together at their tail ends by a suitable riveted studv 20. Mountedgon the stud between the plates, 15 and 16 are a pair of washers 21 and a marking wheel 19 having a plurality of pointed spokes which when rolled over a piece of work inscribe a dotted line thereon. To facilitate the utilization of the marking wheel the body portions 17 of the plates 15 and 16 are formed in such manner as to fit readily into the users hand, that is the one edge is formed on a straight line to abut the palm of a hand while the other edge curves inward toward the tail to accommodate the fingers.
The body portion 17 of plate 15 is provided with a slot 22 which extends substantially along the longitudinal axis thereof. Diagonally located with respect to the center of slot 22 are a pair of lugs or ears 23 formed off from thc plate 15. The plate 16 is provided with a pair of holes 24 so located when the body and tail portions of the plates 15 and 16 are aligned as to engage snugly over the ears 23, see Fig. 8. Referring to Fig. 4 the plate 16 has riveted to the face thereof adjacent the plate 15, a plate 25 and a longitudinally adjoining plate 26. The plate 25 is provided with a rounded flange`27 at the edge thereof adjacent plate 26, said flange being aligned with the slot 22 in plate 15 when the ears 23 are engaged in the holes 24.
The razor blade 2S to be sheared is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5 and the sheared blade is illustrated in Fig. 6. Said blade is of the ordinary double edge type adapted to be utilized in hole type safety razors and having therein a longitudinal axial slot 30 with widened portions 31 at its ends.
The construction is such that with the parts situated as in Fig. 3 the razor blade is mounted on the ears 23 by means of the widened ends 31 of the slot 30 in the blade. The plates 15 and 16 are then aligned being sprung slightly to provide clearance between flange 27 and the one ear 23, and the said ears 23 are engaged in the holes 24. The plates 15 and 16 are then pressed together by the fingers and the flange 27 bearing against the portion of blade 28 backed by slot 22 shears the blade in two. As shown in Fig. 3 the blade is positioned diagonally with respect to slot 22 and therefore, the blade is sheared diagonally from corner to corner, as shown in Fig. 6.
It is desired that means be provided to retain the plates 15 'and 16 in the operating positions of Fig. 1. To this end, theplate 15 is extended beyond the body portion 17 thereof to provide a substantially triangular head portion 32. The body portion 17 of the plate 16 is foreshortened somewhat at the rounded edge thereof as indicated at 33. Pivoted to the plate 15 adjacent the foreshortened portion of plate 16 on a riveted stud 34 is a latch plate 35 of such shape that if aded to the plate 16 the latter would be identical with plate 15 with respect to thehead portion 32 of the latter. However plate 35 lies against plate 15 and thus is not in the plane of plate 16, but has a ange 36 which abuts the edge of the latter and prevents pivotal movements thereof when the parts are in the positions of Fig. 1. When the plate 35 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 however the flange 36 is out of the path of theplate 16 and the latter is free to move pivotally.
The plate 35 is retained in latching position by an ear 37 formed ofi the plate 15 and engageable in a recess or dimple 38 formed in the plate 35. Further retaining ability is provided by a flap 39 bent ofi from plate 35 and adapted to tightly embrace the edge of head portion 32:
A modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 wherein like parts are given the same reference numerals as herein above with a prime added. ln th1s form of the invention the plates 25 and 26 above described are eliminated and the flange 27 of the former is .j replaced by a flange 40 formed off the plate 16. The remainder of the device is the same as described above and is operated in the same manner.
In the further modification of the invention shown in Fig. 11, the construction of the blade cutting tool is similar to that illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 differing in the fact that the plates 15 and. 16 are of like contour and the provision of a different lock means for holding the plates in their operative or closed position.
The lock means comprisesa C-shaped clamp provided on one side with a projecting tail portion 51 which extends along the outer face of the plate 16" at the head end thereof. The tailportion 51 is pivotally secured to the plate 16 by means of a pin 52. When the plates 15" and 16 are closed on a razor blade for purposes of diagonally cutting the same, as explained in connection with the previous forms of the invention, the clamp 50 can be pivoted about the pin 52 to engage the adjacent edges of the plates and secure them in their closed position.
In other respects the form of the invention shown in Fig. l1 is similar to that illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 and like parts are identified by the same reference numerals.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent l. In a furriers knife, means for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two, said shearing means comprising a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent off from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a complete razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned, and a flange projecting from said other member in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent off from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned, a pair of plates secured in edge abutting relationship to the said other member, and a flange extending from the abutting edge of one of said plates in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two beingl pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of' the bodv portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent off from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned, a pair of plates secured in edge abutting relationship to the said other member, a flange extending from the abutting edge of one of said plates in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half, and means for maintaining the alignment of said flange with said slot comprising a triangular extension of the slotted plate, a latch plate pivoted to said extension and having the same outline as the latter, a flange on said latch plate abutting the edge of the other said member and preventing pivotal movement thereof when the latch plate is aligned with the said extension, a flap formed off from said latch plate and adapted to grip the edge of the extension, a dimple in said latch plate, and
an ear bent off from said extension and engaged in said dimple.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent olf from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned, and a flange like ear bent off from the other said member in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half, and means for maintaining the alignment of said ange with said Slot comprising a triangular extension of the slotted plate, a latch plate pivoted to said extension and having the same outline as the latter, a flange on said latch plate abutting the edge of the other said member and preventing pivotal movement thereof when the latch plate is aligned with the said extension, a flap formed off from said latch plate and adapted to grip the edge of the extension, a dimple in said latch plate, and an ear bent olf from said extension and engaged in said dimple.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent offk from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned, a pair of plates secured in edge abutting relationship to the said other member, a flange extending from the abutting edge of one of said plates in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half, and means for maintaining the alignment of said flange with said slot comprising a triangular extension of the slotted plate, a latch plate pivoted to said extension and having the same outline as the latter, a ange on said latch plate abutting the edge of the other said member and preventing pivotal movement thereof when the latch plate is aligned with the said extension, a flap formed off from said latch plate and adapted to grip the edge of the extension, a dimple in said latch plate, and an ear bent off from said extension and engaged in said dimple, whereby when said plate members arepressed together by the fingers the aligned ange bears against the portion of the mounted razor blade backed by said slot and shears the same diagonally.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent off from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned, and a ange like ear bent off from the other said member in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half, and means for maintaining the alignment of said ange with said slot comprising, a triangular extension of the slotted plate, a latch plate pivoted to said extension and having the same outline as the latter, a ange on said latch plate abutting the edge of the other said member and preventing pivotal movethereof when the latch plate is aligned with the said extension, a ap formed off from said latch plate and adapted to grip the edge of the extension, a dimple in said latch plate, and an ear bent off from said extension and engaged in said dimple, whereby when said plate members are pressed together by the fingers the aligned ange bears against the portion of the mounted razor blade backed by said slot and shears the same diagonally.

In a furriers knife, means for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two, said shearing means comprising a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent off from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a complete razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned and a flange projecting from said other member in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half, and lock means for securing said plates in a closed position with a razor blade positioned therebetween.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot aperture in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent off from the body portion of the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned and a flange projecting from said other member in alignment with said slot to shear the blade in half, and lock means for securing said plates in a closed position with a razor blade positioned therebetween, said lock means comprising a C-shaped clamp, and a tail portion projecting from one side of said clamp and pivotally attached to the outer face plates to be pivoted into position over the adjacent edges of said plates.

A hand tool for shearing double edge safety razor blades diagonally in two which comprises a pair of plate members each having like body, and tapering tail portions, the two being pivotally connected together side by side at their tail ends with a short space therebetween, a slot in one said member extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed ears bent olf from the body portion ot the slotted member in diagonal relationship to the center of the slot, said ears serving to mount a razor blade with a diagonal thereof aligned with the slot, holes in the other member to receive said ears when the members are aligned and a flange projecting from said other member in alignment with said slot, lock means pivotally secured to a plate member and including a lateral clamp adapted to overlie and engage the other plate member when in closed position to thereby retain said members in locked position.

The combination of claim 10 wherein said body portions are wider than the tail portions and said pivoted locking means is secured adjacent one edge of said body portion and is adapted to swing over the wide edge to retain both body portions in locked position due to the greater surface of engagement thereof.
l2. The combination of claim ll wherein said locking means includes a C-shaped portion adapted to engage the wide surface of the body portions.
