Description

H. SOHMEB.
AGRAPPE BAR FOR PIANOS.
(No Model.)
Patented Dec. 5, 1882.
' WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY PATENT OFFICE.
- HUGO SOHMER, OF NEW? YORK, N. Y.
AGRAFFE-BAR FOR PIANQS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,562, dated December 5, 1882. Application filed June 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO SOHMER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Agraft'e-Bars for Square and Grand Pianos, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved agraffe-bar for the upper three octaves or treble of square and grand pianos, whereby the quality of the tone in the treble is considerably improved, and made clear and pure; and the invention consists ofa wedge-shaped agrafl'e-bar, which is set into a corresponding recess or recesses of an upright bar, cast integral with the supporting-plate, secured to the wrestplank. The agratt'e-bar is provided with inclined perforations, through which the strings are passed.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved agrafie-bar, shown in vertical transverse section through the end thereof; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the agraffebar detached from the supporting-plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the wrestplank of a square or grand piano, and B a supporting-plate which extends over the upper three octaves or treble, and which plate is provided with an upright bar,( that is cast integral therewith and strengthened by a number ofbracket-shaped pieces, 0, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The vertical bar 0 is provided at its base or connection with the supporting-plate l B, with a tapering recess or recesses, a, which are arranged intermediately between the stiffening-brackets O, the recesses serving as the retaining sockets or bearings for the treble agrafi'e bar or bars D, which are made of brass and 0t wedge shape, so as to fit exactly into the recesses of the bar 0. The agratfe-barD is provided with inclined perforations d, arranged in groups of three, for the strings of each note of the treble, which receive thereby a solid and perfect hearing. The consequence is an improved quality and clear ring of tone in the treble, which is a desideratum, as the treble forms generally the weakest part of pianos.
Having thus described my invention,Ielaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in agraffe-bars for square and grand pianos, the combination ,with a supporting-plate,B, having an upright bar, 0, said bar being cast integral with plate B, and provided with a recess or recesses having inclined sides, of a wedge-shaped agraffe bar or bars, D, secured into the recess or recesses of the upright bar, and provided with groups of inclined perforations for the strings, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGO SOHMER.
