1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a diabolo and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a balancing type toy which may be used by one or more persons. The toy is a double-conical frustum with the lesser diameter at the center. The toy is molded of plastic or may be formed of other suitable material and is cored from the center outwardly for lightness and economy, the outer ends being scalloped. The ends of the toy are closed by means of end plates which are cemented to the body and each end plate has a rotary fan-type disc pivotally attached by means of a pin which is set into a radial ball-type bearing to minimize friction. The fan disc is spaced from the end plate by a steel washer and the disc contains four propeller blades which will cause the disc to rotate about the pivot pin and air slots in the disc will cause a siren-type noise as the fan rotates over the air holes in the end plate. The scalloped edges of the toy prevent damage to the fan whenever it falls, the edges, however, still permitting the fan to receive suiiicient air therethrough to rotate. Holes are provided in the body of the toy to permit a through passage of air. The users of the device each are supplied with a pair of sticks which are interconnected by a chalk line string and the device is manipulated by balancing the same and rotating the same upon the string and after such rotation reaches a given point the toy may be thrown from one person to another utilizing the sticks and string only for throwing and receiving the toy.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eiiicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel means for balancing and rotating the same.
Still another object oi the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel means for producing sounds therein.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of an embodiment of the invention illustrating the manner of rotating and balancing the same,
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view, partly in elevation, taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Application .lune 20, 1951, Serial No. 232,634
Figure 3 is a fragmentary exploded perspective View illustrating certain details of construction in the device illustrated in Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a modied forni the invention may assume, and
Figure 5 is an end elevational View of the device illustrated in Figure 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein, in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, a toy of the character above set forth having a body in the form of a double-conical frustum with the lesser diameter at the center. as indicated at l0, the conical portions of the body being indicated at I I.
The outer ends of each of the cones II are scalloped, as indicated at I2 and immediately inwardly or the outer edges in each case there is aixed by cementing or the like a disc shaped end plate I 3 having a plurality of radially extending spaced slots lil formed therein.
The center portion of the plate I3 is provided with an integrally formed hub I5 in which is mounted a radial ball bearing i6 which bears against the hub Ii of a fan disc I8 which is mounted upon the hub Il by means of a pin I9. The fan disc I 8 is provided with a plurality of propeller blades 2i) and each of the hollow cones Il is provided with a series of spaced circumferentially extending openings 2|.
In the operation of this form of the invention it will be apparent that there is provided a pair of sticks 22 the outer ends of which are interconnected by means of a cord 23 which is preferably of that type known as a chalk line string. The device may be placed upon the string by placing the portion Il] thereon and thereafter manipulating the sticks 22 so as t0 balance the toy upon the string 23 and at the same time to cause it to rotate. When sunicient rotation has been obtained it will be apparent that the blades 2li will cause air to ow through the openings in the disc i3, indicated at 2li and thence through the conical portions II of the body and nally through the openings 2i in such bodies thus producing between the openings 24 and the openings lll a siren-like noise.
In Figures 4 and 5, there is illustrated an optional form of the invention wherein the reduced portion `It has centrally and longitudinally mounted therein a whistle 3@ and there is integrally formed adjacent the outer end of each of the cones Il a spider 3i which, in turn, has integrally formed therewith a pair of propeller blades 32. The blades 32 are aligned with the indentations in the scalloped the conical portions Il. Y
In the operation of this form of the invention, the device will be balanced and rotated in the manner above described with regard to the device shown in Figure 2 and it will be apparent that the propeller blades 32 will cause a passage of air through the device thereby actuating the Whistle 39 to produce a Weird and amusing sound.
While but two forms of the invention have been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit ofthe invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is: l
A device of the character described comprising a body in the shape of a centrally balanced hollow double-conical frustum having its lesser outer edges I2 of diameter at kthe center'thereof, scallopedouter edges Vfor said body, and'means operable ,by the rotation of said body ,for producing sound, said means comprising a whistle fixed longitudinally 4 in the portion of lesser diameter, and propeller blades mounted in the outer ends of each of the conical portions, said propeller blades being interconnected with said conical sections by spiders, and said conical sections, spiders and blades all being formed integrally for simultaneous rotation, the blades of said propeller being aligned with the indentations in the scalloped outer edges to-perinit llateral direction of air thereto, air passed into said frustum by said blades and through said Whistle sounding said whistle.
