JOSEPHH. KLEPPINGER AND JAMES N. NAYLOR, F GHERRYVILLE, PA.
MACHINE FOR MEASURING CLOTH..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,901, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed March 31, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH H. KLEPPIN- GER and JAMES N. NAYLOR, of Oherryville, in the county of Northampton, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Measuring Cloth; and we do hereby declare jects we accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view of the same; i.
The letterA designates a frame constructed of suitable material, and provided at one side with a rotary shaft, B, having a crank, U, at one end and a chuck, D, at the other. The opposite side of the frame is provided with an adjustable rod, E, which is for the purpose of adapting the machine to be used with windin g-boards ofdiii'erent lengths, and is provided with a rotating chuck, F, having a recess, G,
at its end, the two chucks, being adapted to clamp the ends of the board H, upon which the cloth is to be wound.
The letter I indicatesasupplementa ry frame, secured to the frame A by means of the screw; bolts M and thumb-nuts N, the bolts being provided with sleeves P, in order to set the nuts out in convenient position to be operated to fasten the supplementary frame to the main frame. The supplementary frame is provided with a longitudinal slot, R, and a roller, S, and also with a slotted tension-bar, T, which has an adjustable guide, U, at one side for the purpose of keeping the cloth straight, as more I fully hereinafter specified. The bar T is pivoted at its ends to the supplementary frame, so that it may bepartially turned or adjusted to regulate the tension of the cloth. The roller S has secured to one end of its shaft a pinion, V, which intergears with a cog-wheel, W, journaled on a stud. or pin, Y, secured to the frame A. The said cog-wheel has on its outer face a projection, Z, which is adapted to operate in conjunction with the teeth of a cog-wheel, A, suitablyjournaled to the frame A and provided with a graduated disk, B, on its face to indicate the length of cloth wound upon the board, an index or pointer, 0, being secured to the frame A, to keepthe record as the disk B rotates.
The operation of our invention will be evident from the above description, and is as follows: One end of the cloth to be measured and baled is secured to the flat board, which is clamped between the chucks above mentioned, the cloth extending through the longitudinal slot of the supplementary frame over the roller and through the slot in the tensionbar, its passage through the same being regulated by the guide-screw HDdTlJhlllIllb-Illll], so as to deliver it properly to the bale-board.
Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is- The supplementary frame I, having longitudinal slot R, roller S, pivoted slotted tensionbar T, with adjustable guide U, and secured to main frame by bolts M having sleeves P and thumb-nuts N. the pinion V, cog-wheel W, having projection Z, stud Y, cog-wheel A, graduated disk B, and pointer O, in combination with the frame A, provided. with shaft B, crank O, chucks D and G, and adjustable shaft E, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses, this 16th day of March, 1882.
JOSEPH H. KLEPPINGER. JAMES N. NAYLOR.
Witnesses JOHN M. HOWER, A. W. MUNMEY.
