4 Claims. I
This invention relates to an engraving machine.
The object of the invention is to provide an engraving machine which will facilitate the engraving of such articles as articles of jewelry including cigarette lighters, identication bracelets, watches, cups and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an engraving machine which will enable persons to accurately and easily engrave various articles with a great saving in cost and effort.
A further object of the invention is to provide an engraving machine which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent Yduring the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the engraving machine, constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the engraving machine.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan view of the copy holder showing a letter mounted thereon.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on the line I 'l of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8 8 of Figure 1.
Figure 9 is a sectional view taken on the line 9 9 of Figure 1.
Figure 10 is a sectional view taken on the line Ill-I of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I0 designates a horizontally disposed base or plate which may be supported on vertically disposed feet or legs II, Figures l and 2. EX- tending upwardly from the base I0 is a pair of spaced parallel vertically disposed cylindrical posts I2, the posts I2 being secured to the base I0 by suitable screws I4. Extending between the tops of the posts I2 and secured thereto in any suitable manner is a curved copy holder I5. The copy holder I carries a strip I6 which may be made of a suitable resilient material such as rubber whereby the copy member I 'I will not accidentally slip out of place during use of the 2 machine. The numeral I8 designates the name or design on the member I'I which is to be reproduced on the work piece, Figures 6 and 7, and the copy member I'I may be provided with a lip I9 for facilitating the manual placement or removal of the member from the copy holder I5.
Arranged below the copy holder I5 is a Work supporting member 20, and the supporting member 20 includes a pair of upturned flanges 2| which each have an inwardly extending ear 22. The ears 22 and main portion of the work support 20 are provided with registering openings such as the openings 24, Figure 4, and the posts I2 slidably support the work holder 20. Set screws 23 extend through the vertical portions 2| and into engagement with the posts I2 for maintaining the work support 20 -immobile in .its various adjusted positions. A work piece is indicated by the numeral 25, and the work piece 25 may be clamped on the work support 2li by a vise or other mechanism. The work piece 25 may be a bracelet, watch, or any other article which is to be engraved. The openings in the hori- Zontal ears 22 are indicated by the numeral 24, Figure 5, and the openings below the openings 24 are indicated by the numeral 26.
Secured to the lower surface of the base IIJ is a body member 21, Figure 11, and the body member 2l is provided with a socket 29 for receiving a ball 3l' mounted on the front end of an arm '30. Thus, the arm 30 can swing or pivot due to the ball and socket construction. The body member 2l may be secured in place below the base I 0 by suitable screws or bolt and nut assemblies 28.
The rear end of the arm 3D is connected to the lower end of a rod 3I which extends vertically, and the upper end of the rod 3I is shaped to provide a horizontally disposed bar 34. The rear portion of the arm 30 extends through a guide member 32 which is connected to the base IIJ, and the guide member 32 also coacts with the feet II to help support the engraving machine. The guide member 32 is provided with a cut-out or opening 33 for the projection therethrough of the arm 30, Figure 8.
Carried by the front end of the bar 34 is a tracing member 35, Figure l. The tracing member 35 is spring pressed, and there is provided a collar 36 which is secured to the front end of the bar 34. A head 3l is mounted on the upper end of the vertically adjustable tracing member 35, and the lower end of the tracing member is pointed as at 38 for engagement with the letters or indentations I8 on the copy. A coil spring 39 is spaced below the bar 34.
Secured to the undersurface of the bar 34 is a hollow sleeve 40, and a standard 42 is slidably or adjustably mounted in the sleeve 40, there being a set screw 4i extending through the sleeve 40 and into engagement with the standard 42 for maintaining the standard 42 immobile in its adjusted positions. The lower end of the standard 42 is connected :to a horizontally disposedleg 43 and the rearportion of the leg 43 is bifurcated as at 44 for engaging the rod 3 l Figure 10. Mounted on the front end of the leg 43 is a stylus or' engraving member 45 which is adapted. to engage the work piece 25. The advantages` of the present invention are I claim:
1. An engraving machine comprising a horizontally disposed base, a plurality of vertically disposed legs supporting said base, a pair of spaced parallel posts extending upwardly from said base and secured thereto, a curved copy holder extending between the tops of said posts and secured thereto, said copy holder including a resilient strip for frictionally engaging the copy, a horizontally disposed work supporting member adjustably connected to said posts, a bodyl member'mounted below said base and provided with a socket, an arm having a ball on its front end rotatably seated in sai-dz4 socket, a guide member connected to the lower portion of said base for receiving the rear endiof'said arm, a vertically disposed rod extending? upwardly from the rear end of said arm, and secured thereto, said rod including a horizontally disposed bar, a spring pressed tracing member connected to the front end of said bar, a sleeve seeureclgtoifthey undersurfacefof said bar., a Vvertically disposed standard adjustably mounted'` in said sleeve; afhorzontally 'disposed leg connected torthe-lowerfend ofi said standard, and a spring pressed engraving member carried by thefrontY end .of 'said' leg.
