either suspending a plurality of pairs of pants or a single pair of pants with separated leg members.

Another object is to provide a combination coat" and pants hanger in which one or two pairs of pants' may be conveniently positioned upon the hanger in combination with a coat, with assurance that the pants will not be crinkled or folded and with assurance that the coat or pants may be independently removed or placed upon the hanger.

Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of i1- lustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.

In acomplishing the above objects, it has been found most satisfactory, according to one embodiment of the present invention, toA provide a main, longitudinal frame member carrying a vertical, depending member associated with a laterally swinging gate which may be locked in position to clamp the pants either in inverted or upright position, depending upon whether the waist or the ends of the trouser legs are attached.

Desirably, the gate members which are pivotal- 1y mounted at the end of the frame are designed to swing inwardly to clamp each end of the cuii or waistline of the pants in position, without distortion or creasing of the pants, and a central lock member is provided to clamp the two gates together against the cuif or waist of the pants without any substantial undue compression, which would result in undersirable creasing or compression of the pants, as the case may be.

In a preferred form, the central portion of the pants, whether it be the cuff or waist, is left uncompressed or unclamped, with the clamping merely being applied to the edges or ends of the pants or at the front or rear ends of the pants.

In another preferred form, the main, central members are provided depending from a central, horizontal frame and on each side of them are provided pairs of laterally swinging gates which may be clamped together.

Between the clamping members and lthe central parts either two pairs of pants may be clamped or, if desired, separate cuffs on one pair of pants.

Desirably, the interior of the clamping faces are provided with a non-slip fabric consisting of knitted, elastic yarns on a fabric facing adhesively attached to the contacting faces of the clamping members,

If desired, the pants hanger may be independently suspended with a hook or it may be mounted under a normal coat hanger construction.

In a preferred form, the pants hanger when mounted upon a coat hanger is rotatable, so that either side of the pants hanger may be rendered available in the clothes closet for insertion or removal of the pants.

With the foregoing and other objects in view,

the invention consists of the novel construction,

combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be restored to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Fig. 1 is a side perspective view of one form of combination coat and pants hanger, according to the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view upon the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, upon an enlarged scale as compared to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, upon an enlarged scale as compared to Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 1,. upon an enlarged scale as compared to Fig. 1.

Fig. 5 is a side perspective view from above, of the pants hanger element of Fig.1 removed 'from the coat hanger structure, showing the gates in open position.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view partly in section, showing an alternative embodiment in which the pants hanger is rotatable in respect to the coat hanger.

Referring to Figs. l to 5, the coat hanger structure Ahas a suspension hook B.

From the coat hanger A is suspended the pants hanger C, to which the present invention is particularly directed.

The pants hanger C has a base or frame structure D, the central vane or depending plate structures E and the swinging gates F.

These gates are provided with a clamping member G, cooperating with the slotted member H on the frame structure D.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1, the coat hanger member A has a central base structure Ill having the depending side arms I I fitted under the shoulders of the coat or dress. The hook member B is mounted at lI 2 in the central body portion ID of the hanger A.

In the form shown in Fig, l, the pants hanger different thicknesses of cuffs of pants in inverted position as well as different thicknesses of waists of pants in upright position. For example, the inside slot will accommodate thin,..summer pants or will, von the other hand, accommodate a single cuff where the othercuif is positioned on the other side of the central partitions E. At the C is suspended by the rod members I3 from the under side I4 of the coat hanger A.

The frame D, as shown in Figs. Zand 3, consists oi' a fiat, horizontally extending board.

Mounted on and extending downwardly 'from the board are the central plate members E, which terminate at I5 at their adjacent inside edges. This will leave a space at the center of the waist 'or-cuof the pants.

The other ends of the vanes or plates E terminate at IS at the hingedstructure I'! (see Fig. 2).

The hinged structure II has the end hinge'connectiorns I8 to the gates F. The gates F are desirably wedge-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, and they 'have the hinged brackets IS screwed thereto. The gates terminate lin the thin portions fifi, which vare 'provided `with the'bevelled contact'edges 2i.

The inside iaces ci the gates F, as well as the fins or plates E, are `provided with the grip or anti-slip fabric elements 22 and 23, which lwill grip 'the cui or waist rof the pants and prevent slippage therefrom.

The Vmiddle'oi the lower face of the edges of the 'frame member Dis slotted, as indicated at 30, and recessed therein is the slotted metalY plate 3|. This :plate is held in position by the screws 32.

Cooperating with ythe plate is the turning latch or clamping members G '(isee Figs. 2 and 4). These latch members are `pivotally mounted at 33 on one of the gateinembers F.

The swinging members Gare blunt and wide at one end, as vindicated at SII, and at their otherV ends they have thin extensions 35 which may be turned into the slots vIt() to clamp the pants, as shown-at K in Fig. 3.

In the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the pants will be held at the'edges or ends of the waist or cuffs, and they will not be crumpled orvdeformed centrally because of the open space between the Varies E.

Moreover, each end portion may be separately clamped by closure or one of the gates F without the need to grip the whole cuff at one time in-any clamping member. The diiierent'parallel grooves 3G give an adjustment, depending upon the size or weight of the material and, if desired, it is also possible to clamp the cuits of one pair of pants separately on each side of the plates E.

On the other hand, two pairs of pants may be clamped in position, as shown in Fig. 3.

In the embodiments of Fig. 6 the coat hanger M and the hook N and the pants hanger O Amay be of the same construction-as .shown in connection Ywith the corresponding elements A, B and C of Fig. 1. However, a single suspension 4U is employed, with a pivotal connection at 4I to permit the pants hanger O to be swung around 180 degrees. The pivotal connection 4I may include a spring ball latch to latch the pants hanger O in either 180 degrees position.

Thus, when the hanger M is hanging in the closet, it is possible to swing the pants hanger O to either position to remove .the pants therefrom.

Referring to Figs. 2 and 4 ofthe drawings, it will be noted that the spacing of the slots 30 permits the gate `members F to be clamped against same time the middle slot 30 will permit the accommodation and clamping of a normal pair of cuffs of normal weight spring or autumn material.

The .outermost slot Sli will permit accommodation or clamping of extra thick cuil materials or even permit the clamping of two pairs of pants on one or both sides of the central partitions E.

While there has .been Iherein described a-prefered form of the Zinvention, it should be undei`` stood that the same may `bea'lteredin details fand in relative arrangement ofparts within thescope of the appended claims.

Having now particularly described and .lascertained the nature of the invention, and in 'what manner the same is `to be performed, what v'is claimed is: f

1. A pants hanger construction comprising -a horizontal frame with 'downwardly extending vane means, consisting of aligned centrally vseparated vertical plate members, the outsideends of said plate Vmembers carrying hinge mounts .and laterally swinging gate means to clamp a pair -of vpant-s in suspended vposition again-st said vane means and a `suspension member for said frame, said gate means including a plurality of laterally swinging clamping gates mounted on said hinge mounts and extending inwardly to `rcontact each other opposite the central separation of said plate members and said horizontal frame and said swinging gate means having cooperating vclamp-- ing members to cause said gate means to y'clamp thepants againstsaid vane means. Y

2. A pants hanger construction comprising a horizontal frame with downwardly extending vane means, consisting of aligned centrally vsepa/- rated vertical plate members, the outside -ends of said plate members carrying hinge mounts and laterally swinging gatemeans to clamp a pair lof pants in suspended position against said vane means and a suspension member for said frame, said gate means having swinging `clamp members adjustably toclampvthe gatemeans against said vane means, said gate means including a plurality of laterally swinging clamping gates mounted on said hinge mounts and extending inwardly to con-Y tact each other opposite lthe central separation of said plate members. v

A pants hanger construction comprising -a horizontal frame with downwardly extending vane means, consisting of aligned centrally separated vertical plate members, the outside ends of said plate members carrying hinge mounts and laterally swinging gate means to clamp a pair of pants in suspended position `.against said vane means and a suspension member for said frame, said suspension member consisting of a coat hanger, said gate means including a plurality of laterally swinging clamping gates mounted on said hinge mounts and extending inwardly to contact each other opposite Vthe central separation of said plate members and said horizontal frame and said swinging -gatemeans having cooperating clamping .members to cause said gate means to clamp the pants against said vane means. A pants hanger `construction vcomprising a horizontal `frame with downwardly extending vane means and laterally swinging gate means to clamp a pair of pants in suspended position against said vane means and a suspension member for said frame, said vane means consisting of two separated aligned downwardly extending plates and said gate means consisting of four laterally swinging gates, two mounted on each end of said vane means and said horizontal frame and said swinging gate means having cooperating clamping members to cause said gate means to clamp the pants against said vane means.

5. A hanger construction comprising a horizontal iframe with downwardly extending vane means, consisting of aligned centrally separated vertical plate members, the outside ends of said plate members carrying hinge mounts and laterally swinging gate means to clamp a pair of pants in suspended position against said vane means and a suspension member for said frame, said suspension member consisting of a coat hanger and said pants hanger being rotatable in respect to said coat hanger, said gate means including a plurality of laterally swinging clamping gates mounted on said hinge mounts and extending inwardly to Contact each other opposite the central separation of said plate members and said horizontal frame and said swinging gate means having cooperating clamping members to cause said gate means to clamp the pants against said vane means.

6. A pants hanger comprising a horizontal elongated base plate, a plurality of longitudinally extending plates mounted at their upper sides on said base plate including two central aligned fixed plates extending toward each other from the ends of the base plate, but centrally separarated and spaced from each other, and outside swinging plates to clamp the pants against the central plate and said swinging plates and said base plate being provided with latohing means to latch said swinging plates in clamping position.

7. The hanger of claim 6, there being a central adjustment to adjust the clamping swinging plates against said central plates.

8. The hanger of claim 5, said outside swinging plates extending from the ends of the central` plates to contact each other opposite and adjacent said central separation.

9. The hanger of elaim 6, said latching means being partly provided on the lower face of said base plate which lower face is provided with a plurality of spaced grooves and also including swinging latch members on the ends of said swinging plates to engage said grooves.
