CONCEALED DRAWER FOR TABLES Filed April 9, 1952 INVENTOR. BY 1 Patented Apr. 27, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONCEALED DRAWER FOR TABLES Joseph Cooper, New York, N. Y.
Application April 9, 1952, Serial No. 281,394
1 Claim.
The object of the present invention is to provide an assembly of elements, including a drawer member, by means of which the drawer is concealed by the apron of a table which carries the drawer, the said elements permitting the drawer to move outwardly and in position for use, with a gradually descending movement until the drawer clears the apron of the table.
The specific object of the invention is to improve upon devices of the general kind by means of metallic elements carried by the table at its under side, and by carriers for the drawer, which will enable the production of the said metallic elements by simple stamping and bending operations upon metal plates and in such manner that the elements are of low cost and capable of being applied to a table very quickly and inexpensively.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a view in elevation showing, in assembled relation the two co-acting elements at one side of a table drawer, the table top and one skirt bar being broken away and surface areas of the drawer being partly indicated by dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the drawer, of wood, longitudinally broken away and carrying one of the metallic fingers,
Fig. 3 is a schematic view clearly showing a table and the drawer moved outwardly for use, the legs of the table being partly broken away.
Referring to the drawing, I have shown at I a table top member formed with a skirt at 2, the skirt extending around the marginal edge of the table and also depending. The skirt is unbroken and lacks the customary open space for the insertion of a drawer and movement of the latter from closed to exposed position.
At 3 I have shown one of two cam-bars which will be disposed in spaced relationship, so that the drawer 4 may be moved between them. In the drawings only one of the cam-bars is shown, since the two bars are identical in formation.
Each cam-bar 3 is formed at its top with a horizontal flange 5- for surface contact with the inner face of the table top I, and this flange is apertured to receive screws or other fastening devices 6 by which the flange bar 3 is connected to the table top I.
Each cam-bar at its area nearest the skirt 2 is formed with bearing slot-sections I, 8 and 9.
Carried by the drawer 4 at each rear side ilxed thereto. The drawer 4 may be of any suitable construction and the cam slot arrangement provides adequate clearance of the skirt 2. The front wall of the drawer may be formed with a finger-receiving recess at II.
The studs I3 enter the cam slots 1. Point A on slot 1 inclines downwardly to point B. It rises at point C. Point A and point C are on the same level and point B is slightly depressed.
When the drawer is manually moved outwardly, studs I3 ride downward. The movement of the drawer is continuously diagonal. The positions of slot sections I and 9 may be modified and placed in an absolute horizontal position without departing from the spirit of the invention.
When the drawer is in inward closed position, that position may be as indicated in Fig. 1. However, for more secure holding of the drawer against movement outwardly when the table is moved, for example, I preferably form the cambar with a rearmost upwardly directed cam-slot section as shown at It). Thus, viewing the assembly in its position as shown in Fig. 1 it will be seen that the rearmost studs I3 may ride upwardly in cam-slot section If], so that the drawer will slightly rock on the front studs I3, the rear of the drawer moving slightly upward and the front of the drawer moving slightly downward, with a latching effect.
By means of the invention very simple and effective mounting control for slidable concealed drawers is provided which will substantially decrease the cost over devices of the general type heretofore proposed.
' Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: I
A table having a table top and a depending surrounding skirt comprising a pair of parallel spaced-apart supporting plates secured to the under side of the table top each of said plates having a single identical rearwardly inclined cam slot therein, a drawer having two spaced-apart walls forming the drawer sides, each wall having two spaced-apart studs, said studs being movable in a respective cam slot of a respective supporting plate, and means for securing said supporting plates to the underside of said table top, said cam slots of said supporting plates consisting of a front horizontal section, an intermediate rearwardly inclined section and an elevated rear section contiguous with the rear of the intermediate inclined section and having a trough therein formed by a forward slightly elevated portion and a rear slightly elevated portion contiguous with a middle slightly depressed portionnvhereby en 3 gagement of said studs with said trough shaped rear portion of the cam slot produces a latching efiect and whereby forward movement of the latched drawer effects movement of the drawer to a position below and exteriorly of said depending skirt.
