Description

s. T. TRowBRIDGE, or DECATUR, ILLINOIS@ CANE FOR PHYSICIANS.
Speciiication of Letters Patent No. 26,721, dated January 3, 1860..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. T. TROWBRIDGE, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of "Illinois, have invented a new and useful Article of Manufacture, the same being'` a I Cane Designed for the Use of Physicians;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate i corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in havingthe cane hollow or formed of a tube closed at its bottom and having a semi-tube attached to the knob or handle, said semi-tube fitting within the cane and allowed to pass freely in and out of it, and forming a receptacle `for vials containing medicines.
The invention is chiefly designed for country physicians who are compelled to carry medicines with them and is intended to supersede the use of the cumbersome saddle-bags, chests, etc., which are now carried by them.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. i
A, represents the body of the cane which is tubular and of slightly conical form.
The cane is `of the usual length and may be of medium diameter, the lower end being provided with a ferrule ax. p
Within the body A, of the cane a semitube B, is fitted and allowed to slide freely in and` out. This semi-tube extends nearly may be fitted and securedby a screw flancl vthe whole length of theifcanei knob or handle C, attached to its upperffend.w` f The semi-tube B, maybe formed` of thin., metal and should compriseatriflemore than the longitudinal half Vof a tubeinbrdeto415", form a lock to retain aseries of lvialsn, 1 within it. This will beiunderstoodfby are@` ferringto Fig.`;2, in whichliti will be "seen` i. that if the vials are equal in diameter tothe 1 interior of the semi-tube its edgesmust necessarilybe distendedasthe vialsareforcedj into it, the edges returning tio theirforiginalf l position when the vials are in and' retaining e them in the semi-tube. i l l 1 l 1f] The knob `orhandle C, may bel provided "55A with an ink bottle D, over which `a cap o,
the under side of the lcap havingastopper attached which, when the cap b",`is screwed down lits into the inkl` bottle D. ,.Theyink bottle may prove convenient `in Casca `pre-m. scription or writtendirections are necessary to be left with apati'ent. l u] W I The cane may be constructed .at` a small@ expense not greatly exceeding one ofqusualf construction. The body A, `may be of ffwood .i and the knob or handle C, of ivory orother@ y p3 material usually employed for such purpose. Having thus described my ginventionfwliat I claim as new and `desire to secure Let-v g ters Patent as anew and useful articlenofhl manufacture* p f 1. 1 I, A physicians cane constructed with, a 1 semi-tubular vial receptacle substantially `as Y and for the purpose set folrthg V 81T.
