SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,847, dated October 31, 1882.

Application filed June 3, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OGDEN P.LETGHWORTH, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hames, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more particularly to the construction of the upper portion or top of the hame, and has for its object to produce a simple, neat, and strong heme-top.

The invention consists of the peculiar construction of the haine-top, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of the upper portion of a hame provided with my improvement. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cap-piece, which is applied to the upper end of the harne. Fig. 4 is an exterior view of the hame with the cap-piece removed.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.

A represents the wooden portion of the hame, and B the metallic back-strap securedto the outer side thereof. The upper end of the back-strapis bent backwardly or inwardly over the upper end of the wooden portion A, as shown at b.

0 represents an end piece or cap, which fits over the upper bent end, I), of the back-strap,

and which is provided witha flange, c, extendingdownwardlyontheinner sideot'the wooden portion A of the hame a sufficient distance to enable the cap 0 to be firmly secured to the wooden portion of the hame by one or more rivets, (I, or other suitable fastening devices.

which is formed on the lower side of thecap G, and which enters an opening,f, formed in the upper bent portion, I), of the back-strap, whereby the upper end of the cap 0 is retained in its proper position on the haine. The cap O is preferably constructed of malleable cast-iron, and provided at its upper end with a ball, button, or other ornamental device, G. The cap O is provided on its under side with a recess, h, for the reception of the bent end of the back-strap; but, if preferred,the recess may be formed in the end of the wooden portion ofthe hame. The openingfis punched in the back-strap B simultaneously with the openings which are punched in the same for the passage of the rivets and other parts which penetrate the back-strap.

The cap 0 is easily manufactured and readily applied to the end of the home. It retains the upper bent end of the back-strap in place, and forms a neat finish for the end of the hame. the upper end of the wooden portion of the hame, and prevent the same from splitting or otherwise changing its form.

I claim as my invention- The combination, with the wooden portion A of a hame, of the back-strap B, bent over the end of said wooden portion, a cap, O,covering the bent portion of the back-strap, and provided with a strap, 0, and means whereby the cap and strap are secured to the heme, substantially as described.
