Patented Dec. 15, 1953 UNITED STATE ATENT OFFICE COMBINATION I-I ORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY SWINGING GATE My invention relates to a gate.
An object of my invention is to provide a gate which can be swung in a horizontal plane when desired, or which alternatively can be swung in a vertical plane, to provide means for allowin passage of animals therethrough accordin to the conditions encountered.
A further object of my invention is to provide a very simple structure, requiring a minimum number of parts, and yet providing the results desired.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a forward elevation of the gate,
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail taken in section along the lines 3-3 of Figure 1.
My invention contemplates the provision of a gate structure which can be used for all purposes, whereby the gate can be swung open horizontally for certain types of stock animals and the like, and whereby by means of a simple arrangement, the same gate can be swung through a vertical plane for the accommodation of sheep and such creatures, whereby the sheep can pass through the gate quickly without breaking or injuring the gate, and whereby through such vertical swinging, the entire gate area will be opened at once, which would not be strictly true when the gate is swung through a horizontal plane.
I have used the characters It) and H to indicate a pair of fence posts to which my type of gate is to be attached, the character 12 indicating the fence wires.
I have further used the characters 13 and M to indicate the vertical posts of my type of gate, to which are attached the upper and lower horizontally positioned tubes l5, the character It indicating the latticed gate wires, etc.
Attached to the post I3 is a clamp l1 which is secured by means of the bolts 18, the clamp l1 including a cylindrical socket member ill attached thereto, through which socket passes the rod 20 terminating in the tapered end 2|, the rod 20 having the downwardly turned portion 22.
Attached to the post It at 23, I provide a bracket member 24 which also includes a socket 25 which is adapted to receive the rod 2!].
Attached to the other post 14 is a clamp 26 1 Claim. (Cl. 39-82) to which is secured a pair of spaced plates 21, the clamp being secured in an analogous manner by means of the bolts 18. Attached to the post II is a bracket 28 which includesa horizontally positioned extending car 29 which is received between the plates 21, and received through the plates 21 and the ear 29 is a pin 30 having the expanded upper portion as shown.
Also attached to the post I4 is a further clamp member 3| which is also attached by means of bolts l8, and attached to the clamp member 34 is a further horizontal socket 32 in which is received a pin 33 having the expanded end 34, and securely attached to the pin 33 is an eye member 35, and also attached to the eye member 35 is a vertically positioned flange 36 having an opening 31.
Passing through the eye member 35 is a vertically positioned further pin 38 which is attached to the member 39, which member 39 is attached to the bracket 40, which bracket 40 is attached to the fence post I l.
Securely attached to the upper clamp 31 is the horizontally extending further flange member 4| (see Figure 3) which includes an opening 42 therein. The openings 31 and 42 are the same radial distance from the longitudinal center of the pin 33.
The gate is operated in the following manner. For normal use, or for horizontal swinging, the rod 2|) is pulled out of the keeper l9 and the member 25 by means of the handle 22, and the gate will then swing on the pins 38 and 30, the gate swinging in the direction of the arrow 43. The gate can then be used for any desired purpose, such as for passing the larger stock animals therethrough and the like, or for any other purpose. However, in many cases as explained hereinabove, it is often desired to allow sheep or other creatures to pass through the gate, whereby, due to the rapid crowding of the creatures, it is essential to open the entire gate area quickly to prevent injury to the gate and to allow the creatures to pass through uniformly, and for this purpose the pin 30 is first removed, thereby releasing the engagement of the plates 21 from the extending ear 29, and by leaving the rod 20 engaged with the members I9 and 25, whereby the gate will then pivot in the direction of the arrow 44 as shown in Figure 3, the gate pivoting on the rod 20 and the pin 33. As soon as the opening 42 registers with the opening 31 (see Figure 3), the pin 30 is placed through these openings, which will lock the gate into the position shown by the dotted lines in Figure 3,
as well as Figure 2, whereby the creatures can then be driven through the entire gate area. After use, the pin is removed from the openings 42 and 3'! and the gate is swung downwardly again, the pin 30 being replaced in its position for horizontal swinging.
It will thus be noted that the gate will accomplish the results desired, and it should be specifically understood that the various units can be attached to iron or wooden fence posts, and that various variations could be made in the same without departing from the essential spirit of the invention.
It will now be seen that I have provided the various advantages set forth in the objects of my invention with various other advantages being readily apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claim any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
In combination with a gate for use between a pair of vertically positioned fence posts, pivotal means attached to said gate for providing swinging movement of said gate in a horizontal plane, further pivotal means attached to said gate for providing alternate swinging of said ate in a vertical plane, including a pair of brackets attached to one of said posts, said brackets including pivoting pins upon which said gate swings for horizontal movement, a socket member attached to the other of said posts, a further socket member attached tosaid gate, a pin received through said sockets for providing vertical movement of said gate, a pair of spaced plates attached to one of said brackets through which one of said pins passes, a cylindrical member attached to the other of said brackets, a further pin passing through said cylindrical member, a normally vertically positioned flange attached to said further pin, an eye member attached to said further pin for receiving the other of said pins, a further flange substantially at right angles to said vertical flange, said flanges having openings whereby swinging movement of said gate in a vertical plane will cause said openings to register, whereby a pin can be inserted in said openings to retain said gate in raised position after such vertical swinging movement.
