As may be noted, this relative arrangement of parts is onethat permits a user to grip the handle 9, and swing the abutment 8 in an arcuate path about said axis of rotation, between one position in which it extends across the path of swinging movement of the hook l3, thus to prevent the hook from becoming disengaged from the eye portion, and another position in which it is inoperatively located, to allow conventional use of the hook and eye.
In Figure 1, the lock means shown at the right is operatively positioned to prevent separation of the hook from its associated screw eye, while the lock device at the left in this figure is in operatively positioned. The arrow indicates the direction of rotation of after the hook l3 has been entered in the screw eye H, the lock device can be swung around across the path through which the hook normally swings in being withdrawn from the eye, thereby to securely restrain the hook against disengagement.
It may be noted that when the abutment is operatively positioned (Figure 3) it lies in a plane parallel to and laterally spaced from the plane in which lies the eye portion of the screw, and is so spaced from said eye portion as to cause the hook l3 to be held substantially against movement, between the eye portion and abutment.
It is important to note that the device is one which permits its application to hook and screw eye assemblies, where ever said assemblies may be used. Whenever the device is used as a lock for a hook of this type, it does not interfere with placement of the hook for swinging movement in any selected plane which the user may find most desirable. For example, in the illustrated application of the invention, the hook is swingable into and out of the eye portion through a plane oblique to the longitudinal axis or center line of the screw eye, about which the abutment rotates, said plane of swinging movement of the hook also being oblique to the plane of the base of the lock device. In other hook and screw eye applications, the hook might be swingable through a plane perpendicularar to the axis of the screw eye, and in still other applications it might be swingable in a plane in which the screw eye is wholly disposed. In any otthese arrangements, the lock device will still operate does not in any way restrict the user from applying the hook and eye in the location and'arwith full efiiciency. What is claimed is:
A look for a hook and screw eye having a shank and an eye portion in which the hook is engageable, comprising a flat base located in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal center line of the screw eye and having a center opening receiving said shank for rotation of the base thereupon, said base being spaced longitudinally ment rigid with said base and spaced from the axis of rotation thereof, said abutment extendin laterally spaced, parallel relation to said eye portion and being swingable on said axis through an arcuate path about the eye portion, between positions in one of which it extends across the path through which the hook is swingable when being withdrawn from the screw eye and is operative to restrain the hook against disengagement from said screw eye,
and in the other of which it is disposed clear of said path and is inoperative topreventsaid disengagement, the base and abutment being integrally joined at right angles to one another to form a lock member of L-shaped formation the upstanding leg of which is defined by said, abut-. ment and lies in av plane parallelv to theplane in which the eye portion lies, said planesof the eye portion and abutment being so spaced as to engage the hook substantially against movement,
