This invention relates to a fillercjap loosening wrench and has for its primary object toenable the rapid removal of a filler cap from a filler Another object is to enable the attendant serving a tank to remove the filler cap from a filler pipe by employing the nozzle of a supply hose as the handle for the wrench so as to avoid the necessity of carrying a separate filler cap removing tool. 7
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a yoke mounted on the body of a dispensing nozzle adjacent the junction of the tubular body thereof and the angular pipe engaging extension for movement in an arcuate path from an active position in which it lies parallel to the body, to an inactive position in which it lies perpendicular to the body, an arcuate guide rib carried by the body and the angular extension thereof and extending outwardly therefrom for engaging the yoke and guiding it in its path of movement, a ring shaped cap wrench carried by the yoke and extending outwardly therefrom away from the guide rib, and a stop carried by the angular extension of the nozzle for arresting movement of the yoke as it moves to its active position.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of a filler nozzle showing this improved filler cap removing wrench in its inactive position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the wrench projected into active position and the nozzle inverted to provide a handle for turning the ring, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view on a reduced scale of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail a conventional liquid dispensing nozzle designated generally Iii, comprises a tubular body l2 carrying at one end a tubular extension 14, which projects laterally from the body for directing the liquid to be dispensed into a conventional filler pipe which is fitted with a conventional closure cap having outwardly extending lugs L. A valve 16 is carried by the body I2 adjacent its junction with the tubular extension l4 and this valve is actuated in a conventional manner by a handle 18 which operates within a handle guard 20 which is carried at one end by the body 12 and at its opposite end by the extension l4 adjacent the end thereof remote from body l2.
The structure so far described is conventional and forms no part of this invention except in combination therewith as will be more fully explained.
3 Claims. (01. le -560) 'Carried by the body l2 and the angular extension !4 thereof and extending inwardly therefrom adjacent the pivoted end of the handle I8, is a barrel 22 whichextends transversely of the nozzle if! and is provided with a longitudinally extending bore for the reception of a pivot pin 24. This pin 24 projects beyond opposite ends of the barrel and pivotally supported on the pin 24 are the legs 26 of a substantially U-shaped yoke designated generally 28 having a bight portion 36 which moves in an arcuate path about the axis of the pin 24, from an inactive position in which the yoke lies substantially perpendicular to the body 12 to an active position in which said yoke lies substantially parallel to the body l2. Carried by the body I2 and extension 14, and extending outwardly therefrom in concentric spaced relation to the pivot pin 24, is a guide rib 32 about which the legs 26 of the yoke 28 move, and by which the yoke 28 is guided in its movement from active to inactive position and vice versa. Carried by the extension 14 and extending outwardly therefrom is a stop lug 34 which projects into the path of movement of the bight portion 30 of the yoke 38 to arrest movement of the yoke when it attains a position in which it lies parallel to the body 12.
Mounted on the yoke .28 to rotate about an axis which lies perpendicular to the axis of the pin 24, is a ring 36, the inner periphery of which is formed at spaced intervals with notches 38 which are adapted to receive the lugs L of the cap C when removing the cap from its position on the filler pipe. A pivot pin 40, normally extending upwardly, is carried by the bight portion 30 of the yoke 28 and engages the ring 36 for pivotally connecting the ring 36 to the yoke 28 at right angles to the pivot pin 24 thereby completing a suitable connection of the ring 36 to the yoke 28.
In use the yoke 28 is moved from its inactive position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, about the pivot pin 24 and pivot pin 40, until it engages the stop 34 at which time the device is in active position and upon inverting the dispensing nozzle 10 as suggested in Fig. 2, the ring 36 may be advanced over the cap so that the lugs thereof will enter the notches 38 in the ring 36. Upon moving the nozzle [0 about the axis of the pipe the cap may be removed from the pipe and upon restoring the nozzle to its normal upright position, liquid flowing through the nozzle and the extention 14 may be directed into the filler pipe. When it is desired to again close the end of the pipe the cap is threaded thereon by hand until such time as it resists turning whereupon the yoke 28 may be swung about the pivot pin 24 to active position so that the ring 36 may engage the cap to enable the cap to be tightened in place. When the ring 36 and yoke 28 have performed their desired function they may be turned to their inactive position as suggested in Fig. 1, to be out of the way of the discharge mouth of the angular extension I4. By thus equipping a dispensing nozzle with this device it obvious that the filling nozzle willsme'as a handle to j-providethe necessary leverage for tightening or loosening the cap while at the same time the necessity of an attendant carrying around a separate cap loosening tool is avoided.
While in the foregoing there has been .shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invent-ion it is to be understood mm minor changes in the details of construction, -.combination, and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
