Description

(No Model.)
' WASH BOILER.
N0.Z66,OZ7. M PatentedSept.26,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
STEPHEN COX, OF KEESEVILLE, NEW YORK.
WASH-BOILER.
SIECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,027, dated September 26, 1882.
Application filed July 17, i882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN Oox, a citizen of the United. States of America, residing at Keeseville, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skill'edin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This'invention relates to that class of washingmachines which are usually known as Wash-boilers, in which class steam is generated in one part of the boiler and is caused to impinge upon the clothes, and thus cleanse them.
My improvement consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top view with the lid or cover removed, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the line :0 a: of Fig. 1.
Onannexed drawings, the letter A represents the exterior of a wash-boiler, which, in regard to'external appearance,is of ordinary construction, and is provided with the usual side handles. VVash-boiler A is provided with a horizontal plate, a, from which is suspended the steam-chest or clothes-receptacle B, thusformin g a water-space, 0, between the walls of the boiler Aand the steam-chest B. Plate a is provided with an opening, which is closed by means of a suitable valve or. lid, 11, through which water may be poured for the purpose of filling the space between the steamehest-and boiler. Attached to the plate a, and projectthe frame. The steam-chest B is provided with 5 5 a suitable tight cover, F.
The method of using and the'operation of this invention may be described as follows: The water-space G is filled with Water through a valve or opening in the plate a nearly to the line of perforation c o. The clothes or articles to be cleansed, after being wet, are placed in the steam-chest, and the cover is placed thereon. The wash-boiler is then placed on the stove. When the water in the space G reaches the boiling-point the steam. which is generated, not having other means of escape, passes through the perforations in the lining of the steam-chest upon the clothes, and from thence, having'no other opening or means of exit, it finds its way through the clothes and out of the exit-pipes, the grate over the ends of these pipes preventing the clothes from closing the same.
Having described myinvention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a wash-boiler of the class described, having an outer vessel for generating steam. the inner steam-chest, B, perforated near its upper end, and provided with steam-exit pipes STEPHEN COX.
