In Germany February 9, 1949 [The invention relates to aportable vulcanizing apparatus of comparatively small size, which is suitable'for transport in vehicles and enables the j'user of the vehicle to repair damage to the tires at any tim on the journey by a reliable vulfcanization. 7 Q V 'l It, is known that the vulcanization of rubber must take place under heat and pressure at a determined medium operating temperature. Vulf ca'nizing' apparatus have been proposed which press the patch to be vulcanized between clamp- ,ing surfaces and are fitted with a heating de- ...vice. Usually, however, the upper clamping surfaceof the apparatus is heated and constitutes a. container which is intendedfor the reception ,ofliquid fuel. It difiicult in such apparatus :with variations in outside temperature to keep the operating conditions suitablefor vulcanizaftion. 'Moreover, they involve a comparatively ,ierge consumption of fuel because the flame heat of -th heatingapparatus is not used, and are also inconvenient in use and to service. h The apparatus according to the invention removes these disadvantages. It consists of a heatable press with a horizontal clamping surface and is characterized in that the lower clamping surface is constituted by the top cover of a pot-like container for the receptionof the heating device. In this case therefore, the lower clamping surface is hot. Preferably the heating is: effected by means of a burner fitting into the pot-like container and which .is operated by a cartridge of solid fuel,such for'exa'mple as resin, spirit, or the like. Such fuel cartridges develop a medium heat, particularly suitable for the operation of vulcanizing apparatus, and can be adf'justed not only to the size and thermal reguirements of the apparatus to be heated, but can-ifneed-be adjusted in depth in the burner sc tha t it is possible to regulate the heating without use of control apparatus in such a way that a constant operating temperatureis achieved, de-
spite changes in external temperature.
The heated lower clamping surface can be remov edfrom this container in order toachieve quick cooling of the apparatus. It is conveniently depressed from the edge towards the center, so that the parts to be vulcanized come under higher pressure at the edge and run out thin. The upper clamping surface ispreferably a flat plate attached to an adjusting screw, the thread of which engages in a bracket extending upwardly from the lower clamping surface. The invention is not limited to details of construction of the apparatus. Instead of a bracket with adjusting screw, other means can be used ,for, pressing the upper clamping sur-' face, for example the upper. clam-ping surface can be pressed down by a spring or by means of va device similar to a beer bottle capper. The upper clamping surface can also be stationary and the'lower clamping surface so constructed that it can bemoved against the upper clamping 'sLufaceei-ther 'alone or together with the container.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner same is to be performed, we de- "clare'that what we claim is:

The fuel cartridge 2! rests loosely in the socket 20 and is supported at its lower end on the adjusting lever 23. According to the position of this lever the cartridge projects toa greater or lesser extent from the upper edge 29 of the socket 2c. The projecting upper end of the cartridge is intended in use of the apparatus to provide heat appropriate for an operating temperature of about 140 C. If the apparatus is very cold, as in winter, the lever 28 is engaged with the top teeth so that the cartridge 2| projects to a maximum extent from thesocket 20, while in summer, or when the apparatus is warm, as a result of previous use, the lever 23 is pressed down so that the cartridge projects only to a small extent. When the cartridge has burned down to the upper edge of the socket 20, it burns only with a moderate flame, which is sufiicient to maintain the operating temperature necessary for vulcanization] In order to maintain the required size of flame, cut-away portions 30 are formed in the upper end of the socket 20 and serve to admit'the necessary combustion air to the cartridge.
Fig. 8 shows a particularly'small form of apparatus. In this case the lower clamping surface 31 is in one piece with the container 32. The container has on opposites'ides air inlet openings 33 and a front opening 34 for the introduction of a burner 35, which is provided with a fuel cartridge 36 of resin, spirit or the like and has cut-away portions ;31, inits end.
