It. has been the practice to form rectangular bottom frames for milk bottle cases by stamping the frames from 'sheets of metal. This requires the use 10f metal sheets of,;.high quality andtofw a size somewhat larger than; the. length and width of the cases. In producing the rectangular frames in this manner, thecentral portions. ,:of the sheetsare out out and must be usedzfor other purposes so as to reduce itheicost of manufaoture and eliminate wastes. Ingorder to over-: come the objections to producing the rectangular frames from large sheets of material and yet provide a frame which has all the benefits of an integral frame, the present invention comprehends the manufacture of mating frame sections from narrow lengths of material which sections are formed in straight lengths and then bent to U-shaped formation as the same are secured over the bottom edges of the cases. In producing the frame sections in straight lengths, the same are formed into U-shaped formation in cross-section and are cut away or recessed at longitudinally spaced locations to permit bending of the straight lengths where the sections engage about the corners of the cases. Constructing the metal frames in this manner facilitates the manufacture thereof, eliminates waste and the need of handling large sheets of material and provides frame sections which can be readily aifixed to milk bottle cases and the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

In order to provide a channeled reinforcement for the bottom edges of the end and side walls B and C of the case which has all the benefits of an integral frame, two mating frame sections 2| and 22 are fashioned from fiat strips of metal D, as illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings, which are cut and stamped to form an angulated strip of U-shaped formation in cross-section including 5 an outer flange 23, an inner flange 24 of relatively lesser height than the outer flange 23, and

The said strip is cut and recessed at longitudinally spaced points to provide confronting tongues 26 in the outer flange 23 and with the inner flange 24 and the bight portion 25 formed with longitudinally spaced inwardly extending recesses 21 located in alignment with the recesses between the confronting tongues 26.
The frame sections 2| and 22 are also provided with apertured ears 29 and 30 on the ends of the outer flanges 23 thereof respectively, the ears 29 being provided with inwardly directed tubular bosses 3| respectively, while the apertured ears 30 are ofiset inwardly from the plane of the flanges 23 respectively. The sections are bent into U- shaped formation in plan and are secured together in end to end relation to form a complete rectangular frame by engaging the apertured ears 3! on the bosses 3| of the ears 29 and flattening or peening the inner ends of the bosses against the inner faces of the ears 39. The frame is then applied to the bottom edges of the case with the tongues 26 located at the corners thereof and the connections between the sections being located intermediate the longitudinal sides B of the case.
In bending the straight frame sections into U- shaped formation, as shown in Fig. 2, the side edges forming the recesses 21 are brought together to form right angle bends with the tongues 26 projecting outwardly at right angles to each other at each of the corners. The outer flanges 23 of the sections project over the outer faces of the side and end walls while the inner flanges 24 project over the inner faces thereof and the bight most slots l4 in the inner corner elements 19 with the wires or rods I2 engaging through the openings in said extensions as hereinbefore described.
The sections 2| and 22 are secured to the walls of the case by longitudinally extending rods 34 which form supports for the milk bottles. A
transversely extending cross member 35 having downwardly directed inner ends 36 is arranged between the side walls B and secured thereto by rivets 31 which extend through the side wall B and through the apertured ears 29 and for securing the ends of the sections 2| and 22 together and to the side walls.
Instead of the cross member shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5 of the drawings, a cross bar 39 may be employed which underlies the longitudinally extending rods 34 and extends through the side walls 13 of the bottle case A and through the apertured ears 29 and 30 with the outer ends of said bar riveted over as at 40 against the outer faces of said apertured ears for securing the ends of the sections 2! and 22 together and to the side walls.
What is claimed is:
A metal frame for a wooden bottle case consisting of two mating sections each of U- haped formation in plan and of channel-shaped formation in cross-section having inner and outer flanges and a bight portion connecting said flanges, said sections having apertured ears in said outer flanges at the ends thereof arranged with the ears in one section disposed in overlapping relation with the ears in the other section and one of the ears of each section having a tubular extension engaging through an apertured ear of the other section and riveted thereagainst, said sections engaging over the bottom edges of the wooden case with the inner and outer flanges projecting over the inner and outer faces of the side and end walls of the case respectively and the bight portion overlying the bottom edge of the case, a cross brace disposed between the overlapping ends of said sections, and rivets ex tending through said overlapped ears and said tubular extensions and the ends of said brace for securing the sections and the cross brace to the Wooden case.
