This invention relates to ahatrack, and more particularly to a hat hanger particularly designed for mens hats and for attachment to a vertically extending supporting device, as a wall or the like.

It is an object of this invention to provide a hat hanger of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter having an absorbent blotting device supported between the hanger and the vertical supporting device for absorbing perspiration or hair oil that may be accumulated on the headband within the hat.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hat hanger of this kind for attachment to a wall or door, as of a closet or the like, for supporting hats in a very limited space in a manner where the hat may be readily observed by a person desiring to select his own hat from an array of other hats, or in a store where he may desire to select one particular color from another.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a hat hanger of this kind having a hat rest carried by the hat engaging loop for securely and firmly supporting the hat on the hat hanger in a manner to prevent the formation of creases or undesirable marks which may be formed by hat hangers not having a supporting device of this kind.

With the above and other objects in view, my

invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hat hanger constructed according to an embodiment of my invention;

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the hat hanger as secured on a vertically extended supporting member, as a wall or the like;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary, detailed section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates generally a hat hanger formed according to an embodiment of my invention for supporting a hat, particularly a mans hat, on a vertical supporting device, as the wall W. The hat hanger Ill is formed with a fixed element II which is adapted to be fixedly mounted on the wall W, and a hinged member !2 which is hingedly dependent from the fixed member to swing upwardly and forwardly away from the wall W to enable inserting a hat into the hat hanger or removin a hat therefrom.

The fixed supporting member II is formed as a hinge leaf I4 having a hinge barrel l5 formed on one end thereof. An aperture is formed at the other end of the hinge plate l4 through which a screw or bolt I6 is adapted to be engaged for securing the hinge leaf N to the wall W. The hinge barrel I5 is adapted to be positioned on the lower end of the hinge plate, as clearly noted in Figure 1 of the drawings.

A hat crown-receiving ring I! is formed of a loop of wire adapted to encircle the hat I-I about the hatband thereon and a vertically extending arm I8 is fixed to, or formed integrally with, thering I! and having a portion on its upper end engaged in the hinge barrel I5. The arm l8 extends radially from the looped member I! and is bowed outwardly intermediate the length thereof to clear the upturned brim of the hat H, when the hat is secured in the ring IT, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.

The extreme upper end of the connecting arm I8 is formed as a flat loop having horizontally extending member I9 thereon which is engaged through the hinge barrel l5, constituting a hinge pintle for supporting the ring I! from the fixed hinge plate I4.

In order to prevent perspiration or hair oil on the hat band from soiling the wall W, an absorbent sheet or plate 20, which is preferably formed of blotting material, is secured to the wall by the hinge leaf II and extends downwardly beyond the ring II. The absorbent, blotting member 20 is of an enlarged size for underlying both the fixed hinge plate and the ring H, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.

The bolt or screw l6, which secures the fixed hinge plate M to the supporting member W is adapted to be extended through, one end of the blotting member 20 for securing the blotting member 20 to the wall W. Also, a rearwardly extending detent 21 is fixed to, or preferably struck from, the fixed hinge plate l4 between the securing bolt l 6 and the hinge barrel I 5 for penetratin the end of the blotting member 20 and securing the blotting member 20 against pivotal movement as suspended from the screw I6.

In order to prevent the ring I! from marring the hat H when the hat is suspended therein, there is provided a hat rest 22 which is engaged about the lower portion of the ring I! to provide a relatively wide shoulder or supporting surface against which the under side of the crown of the hat is adapted to rest, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings.

The hat-supporting rest 22 may be formed of a paper having substantial rigidity, as a light cardboard paper, bent upon itself to form a loop 24 at one end thereof for engagement about the lower, arcuate portion of the ring H, as clearly noted in Figure 3 of the drawings. The member 22, when looped about the ring I1, is secured with its extreme edges in overlying relation extending outwardly from the supporting member W, substantially at right angles thereto, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, and provides a flat surface against which the rear end of the hatband is adapted to be engaged when the rest 22 is positioned in its hat-supporting position, noted in Figure 2 of the drawings. The hat-supporting member 24 is formed with cutout portions 25 along the length thereof which are positioned outwardly from the inner, complete supporting surface 29 the cutout portions 25 providing for the bendin of the member 22 in the desired are about the supporting member IT. The formation of the hat-supporting member 22 in the manner described above provides an inner, complete surface 26 for engagement with the outer surface of the outer hat.- band when the hat is supported in the hat-supporting device l0, and the outer side of the hat rest 2-2 is provided with separated elements or tongues 27 which may be spaced apart about the periphery of the hat-supporting member H, the spaced apart provision of the tongues 21 providing for the bending of the hat-supporting member 22 to con-form to the shape of the looped member IT.

I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a hat hanger, a mounting plate adapted to be fixed on a vertical surface of a support, an absorbent plate adapted to be positioned between said mounting plate and said surface, securing means traversing said mounting plate and said absorbent plate for securing said mounting plate and said absorbent plate to said surface, said mounting plate having a projection spaced vertically from said securing means and engaging said absorbent plate so as to preclude rotation of said absorbent plate relative to said mounting plate and said surface on the axis of said securing means, said absorbent plate depending from said mounting plate, and a hat crown receiving ring depending from and pivoted on said mounting plate and normally overlying said absorbent plate.

2. In a hat hanger, a mounting plate adapted to be fixed on a vertical surface of a support, an absorbent plate adapted to be positioned between said mounting plate and said surface, securing means traversing said mounting plate and. said absorbent plate for securing said mounting plate and said absorbent plate to said surface, said 4 mounting plate having a projection spaced laterally from said securing means and engaging said absorbent plate so as to preclude rotation of said absorbent plate relative to said mounting plate and said surface on the axis of saidsecuring means, said absorbent plate depending from said mounting plate, and a hat crown receiving ring depending from and pivoted on said mounting plate and normally overlying said absorbent plate, said absorbent plate being wider and longer than a hat to be accommodated in the hat receiving ring whereby a hat is prevented from contacting the surface of the support, and moisture present on the hat is absorbed by the absorbent plate.

3. In a hat hanger, a mounting plate adapted to be fixed on a vertical surface of a support, a hat crown receiving ring depending from and pivoted on the mounting plate, and a hat crown rest mounted on the lower part of said ring for direct supporting engagement with the underside of the crown of a hat inserted through said ring, said hat crown rest com-prising an arcuate non-metallic form of: -U -shaped cross section having a bight portion engaged around the inwardside of the ring arranged for engagement with the hat crown and the brim of the hat and legs extending outwardly from the said bight portionand ring.

4. In a hat hanger, a mounting plate adapted to be fixed on a vertical surface of a support, a hat crown receiving ring depending from and pivoted onthe mounting plate, and a hat crown rest mounted on the lower part of said ring for direct supporting engagement with the underside of the crown of a hat inserted through said ring, said. hat crown rest comprising an arcuate non-metallic form of U -shaped cross section having a bight portion engaged around the inward side of the ring arranged for engagement with the hat crown and the brim of the hat and legs extending outwardly from the said bight portion and ring, the outer legs being cutaway at circumferential intervals to provide spaced tongues.
